The proportions are indeed off, but considering the proportions of a LEGO minifigure, I feels like it totally fits in the LEGO universe. I would buy this in a heart beat if I didn't have the 2018 version.

^This. people have forgotten that Lego is inherently stylized. Being OCD about proportions and miniscule detailing when your "Humans" are trapezoidal block people always seemed silly to me. Please for the love of god, just have fun with lego again.

@@duplexidemic That's an incredibly slippery slope that can lead to any and all LEGO criticism being summarily dismissed "because toy." They could sell a box of 25 rejected mixed-color 2x4 bricks as a Great Pyramid set for $50 and we would silence its critics for not having enough imagination? Nah. Different people like or dislike the same things different amounts for different reasons, and I think we can be okay with that, so long as it's not pushed to a disrespectful or harmful extreme.

Not sure why everyone is saying its small. A Tiefighter is meant to be 7 to 8m, which means this one is much much closer to scale than the absurdly big size that they have been going with, which is more like 20m when compared to the size of a minifigure.

One of my favorite things about this TIE is they finally managed to capture that sleek, iconic ball shape. Lego's just never been good at that, and every TIE before this has been jagged and rough, just layers of corners and ledges that break the illusion. This is the first TIE they've made that was relatively smooth. At least in that regard, it's spot-on, so I can forgive the proportions being slightly off.

The set is not extremely big and expensive like the 2015 and 2018 ones. Also, LEGO got the laser color right! Only thing I would have LEGO do differently is to make the spring-loaded shooters dual-molded, so the front can be red and the rest can be green. That is how it looks in the movies. It is a great army builder set. No named figures like the Imperial Shuttle. (75302) I like how they added a unique figure (NI-L8) to this set. I hope that they do more of that in the summer wave of sets. This set is so good that I am considering getting it twice to make a TIE Interceptor

This wave by Lego has been fantastic, and I’m hoping to acquire either the Throne Room duel or the Imperial Shuttle to further my collection (I know the throne room was last year, but I want that arm printed Vader). I hope Lego keeps this trend up for at least this year’s waves. They’ll have my money if they do.

This has been the direction I have wanted LEGO to take with the mainline fighters since I saw how cool the small ship builds for Slave One and Bespin Cloud Car were in the Cloud City set. I really would love to see this same approach to the A-Wing, B-Wing, Y-Wing, U-Wing, Tie Intercepter, Advanced Tie, and Tie Bomber. Even the Falcon a bit smaller than the current system build trend they have used for years now would be welcome especially if they could get it closer to $90 and not lose out too much on a small playable interior and a cockpit.
Thanks as always for the detailed review and for an honest opinion. I really love this set and the X-Wing. I am really pleased with LEGO for making these. I hope they're well received and we see a lot more of this.

As someone who grew-up with the original Kenner toy Tie Fighter (which also had shorter wings), these proportions actually feel absolutely fine for a toy, and bring back a lot of childhood memories of that. This is obviously not intended to be a proper scale model after all, and so this is Big winner in my book, and something I've actually been hoping Lego would do.
Having something like this works great on several levels, not the least of which is, it makes it SO much easier to get and include several of these in a simple Lego Star Wars battle display, where you want to include multiple Tie Fighters, and they don't take up-anywhere near as much space as the prior versions.

The original TIE Fighter prop does has red painted onto the gun barrels, but I watched some clips and there doesn't seem to be any visible red glow on them in the movies themselves.

The lego tie fighter of my youth is set 7263 the old classic blue floppy fighter, so to see the scale to be so close is pure nostalgia for me. Even the build process looks like the old one but with more modern design.

I was looking forward to this review. Really like the overall size compared to the previous TIEs. In fact, the side panels are supposed to be around 7.5m in height, so this version scales much more accurately with the minifigs. I think it's the center fuselage which is still too big, which makes the proportions look off.

I like the proportions so much more. Mini-figures are already a little off and compared to minifigures I think they look incredible.

Honestly I love these sets. Your telling me that for retail prices you can get a X wing AND tie fighter? Not to mention they will probably go on sale for 20% off.

I'm not a big Star Wars guy and I have not owned any previous sets of this vehicle so I'm looking at this with fresh eyes. I actually prefer it's proportions to the other thing you brought in from a pure visual appeal standpoint.

I'm glad you did the comparison with the OG TIE as that's the only other "regular" TIE I have (since the others have seem overpriced to me), I do agree the 'wings' should be a little bit thinner but I really like this new one, especially at the relative price point

They did use differently proportioned TIE's in Return of the jedi. ILM used diecast kenner toys for deep background shots. So this design is actually more canon than you think.

The small size makes for a good “forced perspective” display with a falcon or other UCS ship. Proportions are close enough at the price.

That was a fun build, grabbed 2 my self thinking of modding one into a interceptor. As for the proportions compared to my first order one im really ok with it. The og tie fighters only had one pilot, the first order tie had a pilot and gunner. So of course it would be a larger tie. So long story short im really happy with this new tie. Keep up the good work Jang!

Imagine if Disney decides to make a Tie variant of this, a Tie Fighter with smaller solar arrays, could even be used in the Mandalorian

They had similarly proportioned TIE Fighters in Rebels. There's something chibi about those shorter panels, I'll admit :D

Got it for myself. Great value for money, and the set is really decent. I wish LEGO could make more almost 500pcs sets in this price range. Grevious Starfighter from 2020 looks even more expensive now in comparison to this set

I appreciate that LEGO seems to care about making iconic vehicles more accessible to to average consumer again it reminds me of the first few years of the line where the bulk of the sets were in the middle range of size and price. Adjusting for inflation the original TIE and X-Wing kits are priced very close to these new versions.

The TIE fighter design in Rebels makes more sense when you take a look at the original Kenner TIE Fighter toy. Rebels had tons of easter eggs that referenced the old Kenner toys and the TIE design was a prominent one.

tbh this feels WAY better than the solo one because of its size. I feel like most fighter sets are oversized especially the tie fighter from solo, it just felt really bulky and not good to hold and so I'm grateful for this.

I got one yesterday and I think the proportions are really great. I do prefer the previous TIE Fighter from 2018 but this looks just fine to me.
Having said that I will be converting this new one into a TIE Interceptor with a few parts because we haven’t had one of those in years.

They should make the bolt for the spring shooter with a hollow stud at the tip. That way, you could put any piece you want on the end (for this set you could put a trans- red Baraki eye piece on the tip). The possibilities would be endless, you could put harpoons, chains, nets, etc. on the end of the bolts.

Hey Jang, awesome review as always! Just a quick one on the build: the top canopy 4x4 dish piece is on backwards and is worth a mention. The instructions and box art are incorrect and the piece should be turned 180 degrees.
Now for my opinion on the set:
Honestly, considering it's LEGO, the proportions genuinely aren't that bad. I see it this way: LEGO minifigs are cartoonish in nature. Everything about them revolves around exaggerated and de-exaggerated proportions. For me, this TIE honestly works with the minifig style... Plus it is minifig scale! Yes, the previous ones had pretty darn perfect proportions but they were massive compared to minifigs and were technically out of scale (minifigs should've been like twice the height to compare to the previous models).
So yeah, for me this works :)

  • @lexthemystic3541

What I did to fix the proportions of this TIE was to rip off the wings from the fuselage and apply them to a Lowell Sphere fuselage I made out of one of the Microfighter TIEs we got!
Looks substantially better and can still fit a figure with my design, albeit, I still need to sort out the issue with durability.

Just picked up this set and the razorcrest, I think scale wise it looks quite good, especially when comparing to the crest I think they will scale well together rather than the tie look way bigger compared to a gunship, plus the price is great glad to have finally picked one up

This is a massive win for parents and kids. I can get an x-wing and a tie fighter for my kids for around 70€ in total (there will be deals online) instead of getting them either one or the other at a higher price for the individual set. Plus decent looking sets and a good mini fig line-up. Superb.
