What is an oast house?
An oast, oast house or hop kiln is a building designed for kilning (drying) hops as part of the brewing process. They can be found in most hop-growing (and former hop-growing) areas and are often good examples of vernacular architecture. Many redundant oasts have been converted into houses. The names oast and oast house are used interchangeably in Kent and Sussex. In Surrey, Hampshire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire they are called hop kilns.

When you see a guy work as well as this , it makes me wonder what the guys were like 100+ years ago . The skill involved to build these old style buildings is phenomenonal .

Any idea what the proper name is for the pressing tool that was set on the joists used to tighten the subfloor decking ?
Watching this i saw what i would call a bodge build, not questioning the skill of the workforce but of the materials used, which other than the steel frame work would require major maintenance within the next 10 years at enormous cost, probably more than the original build cost. Cheap substandard materials used, and susceptable to the weather elements.
Totally amazing in the true sense of the word. Fair play to Dan for an amazing tool. I want to buy a tool just to have it even though I would probably never use it. Although Carpentry is close to my heart.. Just not on the scale of Dan.. Iain in Glasgow an big skill builder follower!!

Could I ask about the timbers in between the flanges of the steels? Did you pack an 8x2 out with some osb so that the joist hangers hung past the end of the flanges? Got to do the exact same thing shortly and was going to use 9x3 to overcome this but it’s expensive if I can get away with some osb instead. Many thanks and love the Oast House 👍🏻
Hi Big sugs, yes we did pack it out with timbers then OSB. I’m not sure just OSB. It’s rated as structural but I preferred real timbers. Thanks for watching it, and good luck with your build.

shame the old place had to go, but for 8+ million development, and probably the neighnours wanting to keep thier views the council probably had to give that prerequisit before any of the nieghbours allowed it. At the end of the day it's money in everyones pockets rather than not. Nice work though. A basic roof I can do, but that would turn my head to spaggetti.

Dan has told me he considers himself to be a no more than average tradesman and is suprised by the people who think he is something special. I think that humility is what makes him so good. 2:11 what are them beam clamps called that you are using to close the t&g joints?
These are traditional floor board clamps. You can still buy them, very handy.

Why would you nail the floor down and not screw? Wouldn't a screw hold the flooring better over time and can be tightened if needed ? Interested to know.
Screws are a good idea but the glue is doing most of the work and stops the squeaks by giving an even bed

Awesome / Amazing workmanship "Dan" this may be one of your best videos Rodger well done if not for yourself “Skillbuilder” we would not see the craftsmanship taking place (Who knows may not see another) That "Huffam Oast House" is a "Folly" it has no practical purpose other than to help sell the houses nearly million bucks and 7 of them this may help them market the house "The Magnificent Seven" you could say. The Oast house looks "Extraordinarily Good" must be a beautiful place when finished (Any chance of a picture of above looking down Drone would be great add that skill to your repertoire Rodger you have many) We have built “Mansard Roofs” along with Windmill Type Roof / Sussex Oak Barns all interesting work. Well done “Dan” you have considerably above average Carpentry Skills. Thanks again Rodger.
