  • This basic pwm 30A charge controller is very inexpenive for $12 or so on ebay. You can use it to charge lead acid, lithium ion or lithium iron phosphate batteries. It can handle 390w of solar panels at 12v or 768w at 24v.
If you are on a budget, you can divide up your solar panels and use 2 solar chargers to charge
The same set of batteries. Don’t pay hundreds to buy expensive controllers. If use conservatively, these cheap controllers will work fine.

Can this unit support 24V panels that produce 450W (as given in the specifications)? Single 450W panel is rather large and the battery too will be rather large. You will also need an inverter and that all together jack up the cost. And the cables for solar panels too are rather expensive.

Yes it can support 24v. You can put 12v panels in series to get to 400w. Sure an inverter is nice to have unless you use 12v or 24v capable appliances.

Got to have that for solar panels huh? Was going to get harbor freight panels, didn't take me long to figure out solar is not free .

Well you have to look at it this way. You are building an electricity plant. The electricity generated after your initial investment is all free. Plus you have some backup power. Your utility company’s electricity is certainly not free. And no part of your utility company belongs to you, unless you buys their stocks. And then of course this is just a hobby.
