    So awesome that you appreciate an old car like this! Many people of our young generation can't appreciate well built products and good engineering. I have been driving my 380SE since I was 16 (I'm 20 now) and I've loved every bit of it. Just finished a top end rebuild. No, it's not the fastest car, but it's solid, and it has class (it's in the name lol).
    If you want to take your channel to the next level, document an OM606 swap!

    Great work. Great seeing that even just a youngster can tell how great these cars really were. Love my 90k mile 93 300SE 23 years old and I don't see why it would have any issues with going 23 more. Only thing I don't understand is why they put the A/C system in location that costs few grand to get to for service or replacement.

      Thanks, yes these were absolutely wonderful cars. Too bad this particular model leaks a lot of oil, we are thinking about doing a engine overhaul and turbo overhaul, I am saving up with my part-time job!
      But these cars don't ever seem to breakdown, and almost everything can be fixed at home w/ the proper tools!
      Hope you enjoyed

    Just thought of some awesome features not working/mentioned. All of the doors and trunk have vacuum close assist in the USA. You can also use the lock on the doors to shut or open all of the windows and the roof from the outside. These cars also came (with a now antinquated) phone system and a 10 disc changer in the trunk. The 1992 and 1993 had the extremely nice Bose beta system with a central ambience tweeter on the rear view mirror. The back panel under the rear window only has the subwoofers so you can play music loud without slamming the rear passengers with music at ear level (the full range drivers are in the rear door.) Video shows midrange and tweeter in front. The components of the bose are frighteningly expensive to replace at the dealer (the seperate rear bose amplifier is around $2000 US.) You could buy a small car back then for what the stereo components cost in this car. These cars defined overkill and the 1992 and 1993 have all of the features (later models stripped down.) And this is just the base model (some of the top one came with a refrigorator in the center rear seat armrest, plus power bucket seats in the back I believe.)
    Some of the diesel models also have a glass moonroof and a limited slip differential for the rear wheel drive. The rear sunshade on these vehicle is a rare option in the 300SD. The 1992 and 1993 300SD and 300SE, plus 1994 and 1995 versions were short bodies. Believe the short body was done away with in 1996 along with the diesel engine option in the US.

    • @bencesmercedesgarage7479
      @bencesmercedesgarage7479  8 лет назад

      Hi, I am aware of all of these features, 1. this particular vehicle does have the vacuum close doors and trunk, but it is very hit and miss, I've only seen it work once 2. on the wireless key, it you hold down the button for more than 3 sec . the windows and the roof will automatically close 3. The phone system wasn't present in this car but I am aware of it. 4. I do not have the 10 disc changer but I have seen other cars with it 5. The Bose sound system does seem very high quality but unfortunately, there seems to be a problem with the sound amp. in the trunk, (If anyone knows how to fix these please let me know!)
      6. I do not believe that the W140 diesel came with the fridge or the power seats I believe that only the 600SEL V12 had that option and I've also never heard of a diesel with a GLASS moonroof, (hence why they call it a moonroof ;))
      Thanks for the comment!

    The "REST" button is actually for when the engine is off, it uses the remainder of the engine heat to keep the interior warm in the winter, or cool if summer.

    That Car is in an verry good shape and an beautifull example for what you could get back than for your Money.
    I like that Video a lot, and you made a verry good job for the Tour of that Car.
    If you ever wondered why that First aid Kit in older Mercedes Benz is imbedded in the parcel shelf or underneath the front Passenger Seat like in most BMW, that is because if your Car is involved in an Accident and an other Car smashed into your Trunk (where most First Aid kits are found), you always be able to reach it even if the Trunk is inacessable.
    Those PINS wich come up if you put the Car in Reverse are in fact the oldschool Version of an Parking assistent.
    That is realy practical if you want to paralel-park the car and important to know is that not all Mercedes have these.
    Also interesting to know is that most Cars back then, if they had such an Pole atatched to it, it was just one single pole and it was just one FIX Pole mostly mounted as aftermarket Item on the Car (not Mercedes Benz specificly) and this kind of "Assistent" was most common in the 50´s to the 70´s before the OIL-Crisis hit, because the Cars back then were commonly longer and that Pin was found on the opposit Side of the Driverseat, because that is where the Driver looks if he turn his Head and drives the Car in reverse for parking..
    Nice to see such an "historical Artefact" on an Car.
    Maybe you should hire your Mom or Dad / Owner as Chaufeur so to speak for a little joyride just to have also an impression of the Car while running and driving, because i think its cool to hear the noises inside and outside of the Car.
    Maybe that comes with your Driverslicence. ;)
    And you also have the oportunity to talk with them a bit about the History of that Car and what the Experience with that Car was for him and so on.

    • @bencesmercedesgarage7479
      @bencesmercedesgarage7479  6 лет назад

      Thank You!
      Yes, this car is definitely filled with history, it is considered to be "The last of the S-Class"
      A lot of the features are simply incredible, and you would never think to see them on a 26 y.o car; like the electric rear view mirror, electric fold down head rests in the front and back etc.
      It is currently winter where we reside, and we dont have a garage, so we purchased a car cover for her and it seems to be doing a good job with the snow.
      The next thing on the list, come spring, is to rebuild the engine. This 603 engine is notorious for having cylinder head problems, and it was nicknamed as the rod bender engine. Fortunately, we found a proper head, and we have to replace it sometime this year for when I get my licence.
      There are also some other little problems like the radio amp for the 11 speaker Bose system (yes 11 speaker system in '92), as well as the A/C system etc.
      I am very fortunate to have the chance to work on such a historically important and beautiful car!

      Bence's Mercedes Garage yea definitely... the last real Mercedes! I noticed you have an Ontario plate... I am from Toronto, and this city is like a graveyard for cars! They rust like crazy from the salt in the winter and get beat down from all the kilometers and long distance driving in the big city... so a car like this in such a mint condition is a real rarity here

    • @bencesmercedesgarage7479
      @bencesmercedesgarage7479  8 лет назад

      Bence's Mercedes Garage If I was you, I wouldnt drive it as an everyday driver in the winter (or at any time tbh), if you dont have anothercar, get some $500 POS to beat up in the winter and keep this one in the garage. also you might want to look at rust proofing.

    Great video, Bence! I am in the USA and own a 1985 W126 Euro 500SEL..and now I am trying to decide between a 98-99 S500 or a 2006 Lincoln Town Car. Both are big and safe vehicles with good crash test ratings..but the Lincoln Town Car is cheaper to repair. But I love the styling of the W140 S500..though I would like to stay away from any W140 with an air suspension..and I have read only the 1999 W140 had one. Can you please tell me how reliable your W140 has been? And what has needed repair? Also, how miles are on it? Keep up the great work and I hope you do more videos on other W140's as you really showed things about this car nobody else did. For example..I had no idea the battery was in the trunk! Cheers!

I joked to myself and then it dawned on me: That's a Canadian kid. Wish we could have kids like that in the US. No problem, when I say fuel, I mean diesel. As this car is a rod bender the oil flows out of it like crazy, but we are in the process of switching out the engine to the block of an OM606.

    I have 93 300 SE n my radio keep saying Wait. Also the person I bought it from used 87 instead of 91 or 93 n it had a stutter when hitting gas.
    Is that cuz of bad gas

    • @bencesmercedesgarage7479
      @bencesmercedesgarage7479  7 лет назад

      I have heard of this issue, they say that European Gas is better than the one in North America, we were told by the mechanic that the diesel is much lower quality, may be the same for petrol.

    Any mechanical problems with the car since this video?

    • @bencesmercedesgarage7479
      @bencesmercedesgarage7479  5 лет назад

      Nothing besides the rod bending... that is an ongoing project however the car still runs decently fine and is usable day to day. Unfortunately we live in an area where there aren't a lot of mechanics that deal with Merc. Diesels so we are in a bit of a rut trying to get the engine fixed.

    Why is your mid-range speaker on the driverdoor destroyed?

    • @FlightNinja8
      @FlightNinja8 7 лет назад

      That is a good question. The car was purchased in that state.
      You are probably referring to the plastic grill which doesn't really affect the performance of the speaker but esthetically it isn't very pleasing I agree.
