got my first bananas this year, after about 3 years. I had NO idea of any of this. It's been growing wild and messy. Thank you SO much. I'm south of you in the Coachella valley desert.

When I bought my house 20 years ago the previous homeowner told me that the banana's in the back yard were just ornamental and not edible, so I never messed with them. This year I cut one off and let is get yellow. It was delicious! so much sweeter that any store bought banana I have ever had. I don't know what kind they are, but I'm eating them from now on!

That first batch of bananas looked so healthy and delightful. Yummy! The second batch, I believe you said they were manzanos, reminded me of people who decide to go strict vegan ; not too healthy and barely hanging on (no offense to vegans but there are some who really need to do a better job with balancing their diets). Anyway, thank you for your wonderful, informative videos!

      Good afternoon Matt,
So great to hear from you!!! And thank you for the compliment! I never knew growing bananas would be this enjoyable when I integrated them into my backyard food forest. They are a beautiful addition to the landscape and harvesting fruits is a PLUS! Consider a dwarf banana variety that you can grow in container, and bring indoors during the winter? Wishing you and your family and enjoyable & happy week/ weekend! Charles :-)

Charles, first of all thank you so much for making this. I really appreciate that you didn't try to cut it down for mass consumption, because I found everything to be really helpful. I have so many questions!
You explained that over time the bananas can become sweeter and used the example of five years being really prime. Does that mean the entire patch? Or do you have to be patient and prune the mother plant to get to that flavor?
If you have the space and really like the dramatic effect of them growing taller, will they eventually start fruiting again or will the older plants eventually die?
Thank you so much again for taking the time to make this video!

My bananas form about 2 to 3 layers and after that they fall to the ground leaving a bare stalk with only 2 or 3 layers on the whole bunch. What can I do to help the plant produce properly?

Google says late spring early summer to cut down. We’ll see how it goes in a couple of months

Hi Charles, I planted two banana suckers about 3 weeks ago and they’re growing pretty well so far (just became spring where I am) and it looks like a few suckers are growing from the one plant. The thing is these suckers appear to be quite far from the mother between 0.5-1m away from the base and the mother is only about a meter tall. I was wondering if these are banana suckers growing also I dug around one of the little ones and it looked like it has developed its own corm. Just wanted to ask you if these are really banana suckers or not?

Now I want to grow my own bananas. great video. hey, just a suggestion: to lower a bunch of bananas, you could girth hitch a loop of rope just below your cut. Then install a carabiner in the loop. Now tie a separate lowing rope to the stem of the bunch and put it in the carabiner. If you use a munter hitch knot at the carabiner, it will add friction and make it super easy to control the lowering with one hand. Then make the cut and lower the bunch as fast or slow as you want to. I am a tree climber, and this is the technique I use all day long to lower heavy oak branches by myself. girth hitch, munter hitch, carabiner- just look up if you haven't heard of any of these, it is totally valuable info and I would love to see you show it in one of your videos.

Helo nice video, I have some tips to get your fruit down safely. In many banana plantations in Mexico they cut the plant at about 6 inches from the base they use bamboo tied together into a stand to have the plant be loward on it wile a part of the plant is still attached at the base it is better to have others help you to slowly lower the plant downward you can also use two ladders with wood or pipes in between them, put the ladders facing to each other with a few feet of space put wood or pipes on any of the steps to connect the ladders and slowly lower the plant and to have the fruit hang behind your ladder stand so you can harvest easily hope this is helpful.

That tip works! Yea... what do you do with that many pounds of bananas🍌? Can you do a video on how you use the fruits- even lots of citrus or other fruits? Is there a much smaller banana plant. I can’t prune it on a latter? 5 feet would be a max for safety! It looks like you struggled to get the pups out. I guess I won’t ask you for a cutting- lol. They will make someone so happy to have your wonderful banana pup to start their own banana plant in their garden.

After freezing how do you eat them? Do you eat them frozen and if you let them thaw first, are they mushy? What else can you do with excess bananas or is freezing the only option for storage? I have my first flower of the ice cream bananas so this video helped me! Thanks. I went from San Diego gardening to Southeast FL! Big difference here but I planted a 6" plant in April of 2020, now I have 3 pups around it. I actually culled as some sprouted because I didn't like their position. I also read that suckers with round leaves should be tossed.

One trick to harvesting your bananas is to take thin but strong rope @ 4-5' long. Tie two overhand loops in the middle about 8" apart. Tie one end around the top of the Stalk of bananas just above the fruits. I use a cinching knot. Tie the other @1' above that. There should be some slack between the two attachments but not soo much. Take a longer rope, length depends on how tall the plant is. run it through the upper Overhand Loop and tie it to the lower Overhand loop. Cut the Banana Stalk. It will hang on the shorter piece of rope. Tension the longer piece of rope. Cut in between the two overhand loops and lower slowly the 80# clump to the ground.. Sounds complicated, but it's not, it's controlled and safe for you and your fruits..

We get very cold contrary to popular belief , Jan thru March ...then in spring thru summer 80 to 105 are our temps. CAN I grow bananas at ALL here? I've gotten conflicting stories. Oh also how do you feel about using Epson salts, wood ash, vinager and baking soda in your garden?

RUclips is full of video fails of people sawing trees and limbs from a ladder. Your second attempt came close to knocking you on your butt. That doesn't feel very good (don't ask how I know this). I would suggest using more ropes to control the swing of the plant. Possibly a support frame as previously suggested by Juan.

      Hello Your last victim,
By cutting at the 3/4 way up the plant, a taller ladder is not needed. But, it may be needed one day soon as I am noticing the bananas are getting higher and harder to reach with each growing season and the banana crown becomes more established. Thank you for sharing! Charles :-)
