Thank you for this! I never thought of Paula in quite this way. I love this perspective! Always happy to hear someone give love to my favorite show ever. Nice video.
I've watched this show at least three times and am currently re-watching it with a friend who is watching it for the first time. Some of the things you've mentioned here are things I hadn't picked up on during any of my previous re-watchings. I had never considered how significant it is that it's Paula she let's in to her theater and not any of the men. I already thought it was the best finale the show could have and also one of the best finales of any TV show and this just takes it up a notch.
Also, I so relate to her giving up a job for happiness. I gave up a tech career making lots of money coding... To be a struggling author. Don't be a coder... There's so many other professions that don't give you major depression. It's a guaranteed soul destroyer.
lol I look forward to your catchy jingle explaining the nightmare of coding ;)
I'm really happy I gave you such a new perspective on the show! It was something that jumped out at me as a moment I loved from the finale when I got the "One Scene for Joy" prompt and it dawned on me upon reading more into it just HOW important Paula's relationship was to Rebecca and rewatching the finale made me really take into consideration how much both it and the show in general is framed around their friendship
I was glad to share something that gave so many people room for thought
If you notice in the first episode, the reprise of West Covina with Paula is framed the same as a love song usually would be (the camera is spinning around them looking into each other's eyes and the backup dancers are dancing around them). I just love that it was hinted at the very beginning.
Well said. Another important thing about Rebecca and Paula's relationship is how much work they both have to put into it, and how eventually we see Rebecca try to be more balanced in offering as well as receiving support (although it remains, as you say, very mother-daughter in its dynamic).
The fourth season is imperfect, but it leads to an ending that is both imperfectly perfect and very necessary.
Other examples of imperfectly perfect endings - She-Ra and the Princesses of Power and Sense8.
Man I wish I liked Sense8's ending more even if I completely get the limitations put on the team trying to wrap it up though that very very last scene is truly wonderful so yeah perfectly imperfect-could have been more perfect if Netflix didn't suck lol
@@YouCallYourselfAFilmCritic For me, it felt like the show saved itself from endless betrayals and unnecessary conflicts and torture and going around in increasingly weird circles - I'm still a bit salty at the slow degeneration of Lost and Battlestar Galactica, and Sense8 was vulnerable to the same kinds of problems if it had lasted four or five seasons.
I love the show and enjoyed your commentary.
My name is actually Rebecca and I used some of the songs from the show to explain my depression to my parents.
I don't have BPD but relate to some of the traits, and the song "A Diagnosis" is so great in describing the naive hope of a diagnosis giving all the clarity in the world.
Sadly it is not that easy, but a step on the way that can help.
Oh I don't have BPD either (it made writing the BPD segment really daunting and prob why it took longer than it would have lol) but I have my own mental health struggles and I love how this show so casually yet honestly depicts this stuff. It's a great way of destigmitising these traits
This was an incredible video. Thank you for making this. CXG is my absolute favorite show that I keep coming back to.
Great video! ✨
Thanks for this video! I could see content on CXG forever
Saaaaaame
Your entire videoessay was riveting & most enjoyable. It helps of course that I am a fan of Rachel Bloom and all she does. I wasn't able to watch all 4 seasons of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and had much curiousity about how it ended. Now I know.
Ive watched CXG 4 times and never thought of Paula like that, it makes so much sense that it makes me feel embaressed hahaha great video!
THANK YOU, that Breaking Bad finale was waaaay too kind to Walt. The man got almost every single thing he wanted, including dying on his own terms.
Gonna have to watch Crazy Ex-Girlfriends before commenting on that part...
I never loved how kind it was to Walt yeah I get Ozymandias was his downfall but he did nothing to redeem himself and was a dick here too lol
You can watch up to a point here without spoilers (I outline when I go into spoiler territory) but obviously baaaaad idea to go into this one blind on CXG the show is absolutely worth your time
Wonderful perspective on the finale, I totally agree with your points.
great video
just finished my 6th rewatch. cxg is my favorite show ever. i even wrote my master's thesis on the show.
Oh shit that's really cool! There's a lot academically you could pull from this show alright
@@YouCallYourselfAFilmCritic yees, at first I've thought of deconstruction of romcom/musical, but ended up writing about the representation of mental health
Great video! I love this show
Great video, you really have the patter!
Also, i know how scary it can be to put ypur thoughts out there, so hopefully ypu feel encouraged to continue, im subbed
Thank you
Well, now I’m going to have to rewatch my favourite show again ❤
This is a very good video essay, keep doing what you love ❤
Very enjoyable watch
Amazing take. I love Paula and rebecca relantionship. Love the video.
This was a lovely video!! Hope more people watch this 💜
Loveee CXG and this was so true even though I'd never thought of Paula being her (platonic) "true love" by the end of the show :)
Thank you
Love this vid! (Also Walt’s business partners screwed him over financially with their joint company, it’s basically a legal way to ruin someone)
Oh shit it's been years since I've seen the show I thought he dissolved their partnership of his own volition lol
Okay fuck em then 😋
@@YouCallYourselfAFilmCritic I just remembered it bc I’m a lawyer and was immediately like yeahhhh fuck those guys, IP law is a bitch 😅
@@YouCallYourselfAFilmCritic We never get the reality of what happened, the White story and the Schwartz story are probably both lies.
the pacing of this video was flawless. I watched season 1 of this show so I got most of the context. Great analysis!
Oh thanks! I was afraid that Breaking Bad intro went on too long but I got what I wanted to talk about out there
CXG is still worth watching even knowing all this it's such a good show
I've been watching a lot of BB videos a lot recently so during the beginning of the video I had to double check I didn't click on the wrong video. 😂
I couldn't think of a better end for CXG. I love this show so much.
lol may have not been the best way to open a vid on CXG in hindsight xD I do think the contrast between BB and CXG's finales for me made it a good jumping off point because the former's finale is praised and while I like a lot about it I don't feel it hits as well anymore whereas I could not think of a better ending for the latter
Omg naur I'm sorry this one took me so long to get to and I do want to watch but haven't finished Crazy Ex Girlfriend so I'm putting this vid in my "Watch after I Watch" playlist, which is a thing I made for stuff that spoils stuff I wanna see haha
Oh fr I say in the vid a couple times don't watch this if you haven't seen the finale I've no issue with you coming back once you've seen the series it's worth your time (I mean obviously I think that I made a vid talking about how much I love the finale lol)
Great work Dan, I love CXG
Wow this video is so well done! You really sound like you’ve been making videos like this for years. I was surprised the video was over 20 minutes-it was so good I barely noticed the time go by!
If you’re interested in video suggestions, I would love your take on the Sopranos’ prequel, or really any Soprano takes at all. You have a wonderful eye for detail.
Thank you I really appreciate that
I just rewatched CXG and watching this video really is the perfect imperfect ending ❤
CXG is the best and the finale was so perfect, loved this overview and analysis!
Dani with the YETAYYY!
