I have one question.. as I saw in your CV, there were a lot of achievements and even distinctions in subjects. So what if an average person who doesn't have those applies? Will the person who has a better experience and skill set get more preference? If yes, just CV is not one of the criteria.. the person should be exceptionally well in Academics, Extra Curriculum and even has to have a good publication record? What's your take on this.
That's an interesting question. So, many people do their PLAB/UKMLAs because they were told it's an easy exam and a cakewalk to get a job. But you must understand that the job market doesn't work like that. And, understandably, people don't know that because we aren't taught these things in med school. You have to understand that medicine is like any other job. You have to stand out from your peers. Burying your head in books will get you degrees, but it won't guarantee success. So, if somebody has more clinical experience, they are given preference, but a competitive CV can often bring you an even footing with them despite not having years and years of experience (for instance, I had less than a year of experience post-graduation) Also, improving your CV is not just for jobs. It makes you a well-rounded clinician. I'm unsure if I've answered your question entirely, but I'm happy to discuss this further and give you tips on Instagram. Hi. May I know how you got your observership in germany? I am job hunting in the UK but my partner is german and I spend here a lot of time. I am currently here in Germany and would like to know if there is maybe a chance I can do a brief observership. Thank you in advance for your answer.
Hiya, It was through the International Federation of Medical Students' Associations - ifmsa.org/ They ran the programs for clinical and research exchange (observership) for medical students. However, if you approach universities, you might be able to arrange observerships yourself.
Hey there thanks for the video! I graduated in June2023 and got registered in august. I had to give up on my job offer since I had to give OET in august then had 2 months to give PLAB1 in November. Now I have my plab2 on may 8 and I'm leaving for Uk on march 13. So I had no place for job since my graduation. Do you think this 1 yr gap would affect my job prospects so much
Hi, since you were preparing for exams, ideally it shouldn’t! But the jobs are getting more competitive now so they prefer hiring people with clinical experience. Still, try to highlight all your other achievements that should help. And you can join a job in your home country after going back while applying for NHS jobs. That would give you clinical experience as well!
Hi could you please guide me regarding RMO and JR job interviews . What topics should I do ? I have an interview tomorrow in the morning. Thank you so much .
Hi, you can study the common medical / surgical/ orthopaedic emergencies that you’re likely to encounter as a CMO/JR. For a RMO role, you would need to understand administration and the structure of the hospital more than the cases. So it depends on which department and which specific role you’re applying for :)

Hi Dr Rupali, excellent video!! Could you please help me for some queries- I am a Gynecologist with 20+ years of teaching and clinical experience, holding MRCOG, an active researcher with a lot of publications in indexed journals and always updating with courses and CPD. I need to improve my resume in QIP, leadership courses and was thinking of joining a PG cert in medical education. Can you please give some recommendations or suggestions. And is it required to go for a clinical attachments Thanking you in advance
Hiya, I'm quite junior to be giving you advice unfortunately. I would recommend connecting with consultants on Linkedin who would be able to guide you better since the requirements at a consutlant level are drastically different from a junior level.
Hi Dr Rupali , I m just freshly pass out mbbs plab2 due on 4 april. Can u guide me abt where I can get good research experience, I m thinking of doing one after plab2 exam after returning back to India until I start my first nhs job
Hi, you can try to look for opportunities at ICMR since they do regularly advertise for available roles for MBBS pass-outs. You can also get involved in ongoing research projects at the hospital where you work as a medical officer. Or you can start your own project! We have an abundance of interesting cases in India and a case report is the easiest way to start :) I’ll also be putting out a research series soon, so stay tuned for it!
Thank you Dr Rupali for this amazing and extensive guide. I had a doubt regarding supporting information and I would really appreciate if you can help. So do we need to add the previous employments, experiences and skills, courses etc in the supporting information?
Hi, you don't need to add all of your previous employments and experiences in the supporting information unless it is relevant to the speciality you are applying for For eg. You can mention having A&E experience if applying for A&E or surgical experience if applying for a surgical job but there is no need to mention all of your clinical experience again in the supporting information
So personally, I find it easier to ready if you have headings clearly signposting the information you're giving. You would want to avoid points since it's less conversational and more mechanical looking if you get what I mean.

Hi tysm for the informative video! I have a question regarding visa, what i heard was you do your plab2 and preferably clinical rotation on short term (6 months) visitor visa, then you start looking for a job and get a certificate of sponsorship, then you have to go back to your home country and get a work visa with your CoS. Is that correct? Like are you there on visitor visa right now sorry the legal visa stuff just stresses me out! I'd really appreciate it if you reply🥲
Hello, yes you do need to go back home to apply for a work visa. Don't worry too much about it - it's a fairly straightforward process. I'll also make a video about the visa process.
So the CV is for when you’re applying for attachments or taster weeks. I’ve included it so it’s a good reference point in terms of formatting and things to include. I have then gone through my trac jobs application for reference too. It covers both aspects :)
So a clinical attachment doesn’t guarantee a job. Clinical attachments help you understand the system, make connections with consultants & registrars and provide opportunities for teaching, audits & BLS/ALS which are likely to help you with the job hunt and portfolio even when you apply for training in the future. Some trusts give preference to clinical attachés since they already know the hospital but it doesn’t guarantee a job. Some have to do multiple attachments to get a job. It is only a boost!
So you can check the person specifications of the speciality you are interested in an start preparing your portfoilio accordingly. However, 3rd year might be a bit too soon since portfolio requirements change every year. Some general things which would always be helpful is research, audit and teaching experience.
