    What do you do if the 6 digit code doesn't work. I put my PW into my Firefox account on my PC, and then it wants the authentication code, which I type in from the Google app on my phone, and it says the code is incorrect.

    2fa has never worked for me. It has always locked me out of my accounts. I am very leary of it.
    My problem with your video is that you could be more detailed. What I need to see is you setting up a new account while you use your phone with an authenticator app. You will need to have someone to video each step showing exactly what to do. This is how you could make the video better and I would appreciate you doing this because I'm going to be forced into this. You should also show how to use back up codes incase you get locked out. I did like the speed that you did this in. thanks

    • @AllThingsSecured
      @AllThingsSecured  3 года назад +2

      Yes, you can, but you’ll need to make sure you either have the backup codes or have set up a second device in order to access the security settings of the accounts. Keep in mind that this is a second factor of authentication - the thief would still need to have guessed your password before the 2FA codes are of any use.

    • @tateclement6984
      @tateclement6984 2 года назад

      Agreed because I have lost my code by deleting the wrong one and can’t seem to find out how to access my account because there is no longer a code to put in to access the account that has the Authenticator.

  • @begriddled

    Some sites only offer SMS 2FA. In that circumstance which is generally more secure - using SMS with the reliability and fake SIM card hack issues I heard about the other day, or not using 2FA at all, and relying on good old fashion hard passwords and other security-minded practices?
    Also, if there's a backup method, this must surely be a case of a chain only being as strong as the weakest link and however secure the authenticator app method is, if there's an alternative way in then that's the one a hacker would surely use.

    • @AllThingsSecured
      @AllThingsSecured  4 года назад

      Good points here. This "SMS only" option is quickly going away, so I don't know many logins that only offers this anymore. In that case, I probably wouldn't use SMS 2FA, but that's mostly because I find it cumbersome and annoying. I'm sure it can be argued that any form of 2FA, even SMS 2FA, is better than no 2FA, though.
      As for the backup method, you are correct. For this reason, I don't recommend you store your backup codes digitally. Instead, I write them down and keep them in my personal safe at home.

    • @begriddled
      @begriddled 4 года назад

      @@AllThingsSecured Thanks for replying! Having started to use an authenticator app some time ago I've found recently that not all sites provide backup codes, and too many are still not offering it at all, or offer it in addition to SMS but still keep that as a forced backup option (that was what led to my weakest link note).

  • @begriddled
    @begriddled 4 года назад +52

    There's a seriously important step missing from this video that is highlighted by some of the comments here and elsewhere. When you set up 2FA for a login using an authenticator app like this they should ALWAYS provide several emergency single-use backup codes that you can use in the event that you no longer have access to the app and, more importantly, the data. That can (best assume at some point WILL) happen if you lose or break your phone or other things.
    Using one of the codes will let you get back in and reset everything. But be sure not to run out of those codes - you can only use each one once. It should go without saying that you should keep copies of the emergency codes somewhere secure and TOTALLY different to your phone. A sheet of paper with them written down and stored between the pages of a book on a friend's bookshelf ought to be pretty secure and even survive a house fire (not if it's your friend's house, of course - so keep another secure copy somewhere else!)

    • @Solid_Snake99

      Yes there is a backup code. It is provided after you set up the 2 factor authentication, and you have to save it

    • @AllThingsSecured
      @AllThingsSecured  4 года назад +5

      Absolutely correct and I'm sorry I didn't highlight this more in the video. Another (better?) option is to setup both an authenticator app 2FA and a 2FA security key simultaneously. I prefer this over the security codes if possible.

      @@AllThingsSecured FreeOTP is open source (which is always better). I recommend Authy to anyone who doesn't have time or technical skills to configure FreeOTP. The main reason for not going with Google Authenticator is to improve privacy through compartmentalization. You want to reduce data linkability as much as possible. If you use all google products (as most people do) it is really easy to link all our data points and build a profile of you. If you swap some products for non-google products and compartmentalize all your digital interactions this significantly improves your privacy. You can check out my digital balance philosophy cdmcdermott.com/philosophy/ which explains three strategies (compartmentalize, protect and refine) you can use to find the right balance in your digital interactions. All the best

To add extra security, the RSA token should work with another password. To log in you enter your 4 numbers password, wait for the RSA change, then enter as apear on the token. Interesting question. It might be challenging to set up Google Authenticator without access to a desktop or tablet computer, but as far as using it, it's most definitely possible (and recommended). The other option, if you'd like, is to use a security key instead. But that costs money.

    This would have been better if you'd just stuck with Google. How do you make sure you don't get locked out? Google is forcing this on me. How do you get a code to scan BEFORE you turn on two-step authentication? What happens if you lose your phone or it breaks? You make it sound easy because you've only covered what happens when it works; you haven't covered any of the things that can go wrong. Also, like many youtube videos, it would be better without the music.

    • @AllThingsSecured
      @AllThingsSecured  3 года назад

      Thanks for the feedback, Andy. Perhaps I’ll do a follow up video describing what could go wrong. It’s important to keep the backup codes in case your phone gets stolen. You could also set up this 2FA through something like 1Password that stores is all in the cloud, so even if you lose your device, you still have access to these codes.

I then flick back to my page but the browser page has refreshed and requires me to input my username and password again. By the time I've done this. My code is expired!!! Help. The browser page I am using doesn't have a corresponding app. Using android.

      Yea, that sucks. Perhaps you can find a setting with your browser that doesn't refresh the page every time. If that doesn't work, I'd suggest trying to use a 2FA key instead of the authenticator app (or use a separate tablet or phone for the authenticator app).

      You either have to try to verify your account using another device that is still logged into Facebook, or you have to go through a lengthy process of account recovery. That’s why it’s so important to keep backups of your 2FA.
