There's many horses here, some not even known by many people in present time but Barbaro was never mentioned here, there's even a statue honoring Barbaro, great horse the favorite that day to win the triple crown, misfortune was in its path, a fighter but laminitis won the battle, he was America horse, RIP Barbaro.
@@FANLIZable has nothing to do with videos. He hardly had a career. He did very well but even going into the Derby Barbaro wasn’t necessarily treated as the overwhelming hero. He raced only 7 times (6 for real) up until early May of the 3yo season. Nothing against him; I was so devastated when the incident happened and never saw the Preakness as it was all about Barbaro. So sad when all their efforts finally failed the next year. But Barbaro did not have much of a career to say he needs to be in top 50. There have been hundreds of great horses in our history, many of the old horses completely ignored, and it is hard to say who should be up there.

@@mikewarren1401 And everyone makes excuses as to why their horse lost... Spectacular Bid didn't win the Belmont Stakes because he apparently stepped on a tack that morning. Point Given didnt win the Kentucky Derby because of an apparent jockey error. Etc etc etc... And then you have horses like Phar Lap who won a race with a cracked and bleeding hoof and being weighed down far past the amount that should be tolerable for a horse... I'm not saying Secretariat wasn't a great. He obviously was... But is he THE greatest? No. The G.O.A.T is disputable because so many horses fall into that category for different reasons.
Great list. Obviously there is no "correct" list. Kudos to you for not numbering and just putting a list out there. Some of my random thoughts...Point Given maybe best horse since 2000 to not win TC. Of course there were some greats. Smarty Jones, Afleet Alex were two of them. I think Spectacular Bid is one of the TOP 3 dirt horses. Won at many distances, broke handful of records, raced 30 times or so. Won 26 of them. We didn't get to see how good Barbaro was. Candy Ride looked like the "next big thing" in his Pacific Classic romp. His track record still stands today. Rachel Alexandra's "prime" window was short, but during that time, I'd have bet on her over Zenyatta. Zenyatta's career was better. Pharoah was the real deal. I think Justify was too. Baffert has talked up those two and Point Given more than any of his other horses ever. Silver Charm, gutsy as they get. Arrogate...here and gone in a flash. Same with Shared Belief (son of Candy Ride). Too many horses get 8 races in and they are retired (as soon as they are determined to be "Great", they are retired). Stinks but its the reality. Ghostzapper...only ran over a mile in one race...and SMASHED everyone. What would have happened if he would have trained for longer distances and ran in TC races? War Emblem....a one trick pony for the most part. If he got the lead and wasn't pressed for it, he'd win. Real Quiet...likeable...ran his best 3 races of his career between May and June of 1998. Fusaichi Pegasus...another short career. Fizzled in Breeders Cup Classic. Funny Cide...easy to root for. Most Geldings are. They just keep racing them. Thanks for reading. Thanks for being horse racing fans. They don't whine, they don't use their "sports" status to get on a political pedestal.
Hurts my heart to see the sport fading away, and I’m fairly young at just 21 years old, however my grandfather got me into watching the sport and attending Hollywood park and Santa Anita, and I assure that it will never leave my mind, and I’ll always be an avid horse racing fan til the day I die !!! My personal favorites are the Bid, Slew, Affirmed, Secretariat and for ones as of lately it would have to be Arrogate, Pharaoh, Curlin, GhostZapper, and Invasor !!! This year there is one horse in specific that I seriously hope I can add to my list of all time greats, Essential Quality!!!
I was bout to get mad seeing Easy Goer and no Sunday Silence in this list, but then I hear the "threatening presence" I was like oh better lol. He was clearly the better horse of them both.
People will say Big Red was best horse ever then turn right around and say Easy Goer was better than Sunday Silence. Is it about time or performance? Remember Seattle Slew ran Belmont 3 seconds slower than Affirmed. When they raced each other that time didn't mean sqaut. So is it time or performance?
I don't think people today can wrap their heads around Kelso's 5 Jockey club gold cup victories. The equivalent today would be a horse winning 5 Breeders cups classics. Something no horse will ever do.
@Don't Bet Chalk 1997 Many of his losses were when he carried 15+ pounds more than the rest of the field. Watch him in the Woodward and Jockey Gold Cups. Under equal weights, Kelso was practically invincible. It is true however, he did not like the West Coast tracks. I still consider him overall the greatest American racehorse ever based on body of work.
That horse doesn't seem to get mentioned much & Kelso beat generation after generation. Won 3 straight woodwards & 5 Gold Cups on the bounce & giving alot of weight away. Have to say Kelso was one of the best Classic horses ever between 1960-64. Have to say Kelso had some engine.
Secretariat was the greatest racehorse that ever lived -- AND - he will never be topped, evidenced by the fact that track and distance records he set nearly 50 years ago have never been beaten and never will.
Is that some sort of a joke? He holds 1 record, at a distance that nobody hardly runs anymore. He is a full 10 lengths slower than Spectacular Bid ate classic distance of 10 furlongs. In fact, Spectacular Bid is faster at 5f, 6f, 7f, the mile, 1 1/16, 1 1/8, 1 3/8...Swaps had 5 world records when he retired..Secretariat best none of them. Dr Fager was much faster as well at most distances...with tremendous weight on his back..all the horses I mentioned achieved their greatness with as much as 14 more lbs on their back.. look I get It..we all have our favorites. I loved Skip Away. (Who also was faster at 10 furlongs than Secretariat) But wouldn't dream of calling him the greatest. I could make an argument that he was better than Secretariat...but certainly not the 3 horses I mentioned...
@@davidbracher8322 NOPE - Horsemen have to suffer with fans like you who are Secretariat haters. It's like in harness racing where you find the Niatross haters, It's a weird kind of anthropomorphism.
@@davemattia great rebuttal. The trainers of that era agree with me. Mathematics agrees with me, Beyer speed figures agree with me. Historians agree with me. But it's ok. Half this country lives in an alternative reality these days. So have at it.
@@davidbracher8322 All you have to do is google me under my full name. David-Damien Mattia. It will be patently clear that I pretty much know what I am talking about and there is NO ONE in the racing game that I do not know personally.
@@davemattia ok first off, I don't hate any animals. Especially horses. I have devoted much of my life to sport. Especially the history of the game. I literally have a tire room devoted to memorabilia including all 3 triple crown saddle cloths from Whirlaway. And an extensive library to boot. And you are flat out wrong in your assertion that Secretariat holds numerous records. He holds 1.maybe you were referring to restricted racing records??? But those are not recorded. Or maybe even track records. And I do believe he holds/held 3 of those. Look I could go on for hours. I will ad one tidbit to his Belmont run. The NYRA spent 10 hours hard rolling that Belmont surface prior to Belmont day. The undercard yielded some smoking times as well. A Maiden race coughed up a 107 4/5 for six furlongs. And a grade 2 stakes race a 141 2/5 for a mile and 1/16th. Every race was faster than hell. Glib is an understatement. Then you have the big question, why was he full out with a 20 length lead against to what amounted to a pack of claiming horses???? The sport wanted exactly what it got. An eye popping fast race. It was good for a struggling sport. But then lost 2 of his next 3 in open company...And even with all that. His fractions in that race are dwarfed by Spectacular Bids fractions in his world record run....again I don't hate Secretariat. It does offend me some when I see people today who know nothing, spew such nonsense of nobody better. Because it is not true..and he never went through the test of Champions...weight!! He was certainly a great horse. Just not in the same league as several others.....I meant no offense. And I will check you out on Google. I will recommend a good book as well. "The last super horse of the 20th century" by legendary author, Peter Lee. Peace..and have a good day...and if you want to see an amazing race. You tube the 1979 Florida Derby..a track record the hard way..lol
A very nice job, and I congratulate you for not putting them in some numerical order. The "greatest horse ever" is a mythical beast. Line up Man O' War, Secretariat, Native Dancer, Count Fleet and Citation and run 5 races. You'll get five different winners. Glad to see Beholder and Exterminator on the list. Why no turf horses? How about Wise Dan...two time horse of the year?
Round Table was a turf horse. Some say he was the greatest turf horse. He also won 43 races in four years. I am not sure that any other horse in history possessed the combination of talent, durability, and resilience required to win so many races in such a short time frame. Round Table was almost indestructible. He also set 16 track, US, and world records and scored 17 wins while carrying between 130 and 136 pounds.
Alphabetical order. 24:00 And i maintain if you ran each of these champions at 1.5 miles, each running their best race of their lives, that Secretariat's Belmont would best them all, either looking at flat times, or comparing Beyer Speed Figures. Andy Beyer went back and computed the fig for Big Red's 1973 Belmont, and came out with a 149. No other horse has come close.
@@garylobo348 Why the Mile and a half. The Champions distance is a Mile and a quarter. A lot of these horses never even ran the Mile and a half. But put it this way, when Spectacular Bid set the still standing world record at the Classic distance in 1:57.69. he was eased up the last 1/16th of a mile. It could have been much faster. So if he just jogged another 1/4 mile in 26 flat. He beats Secretariat at that distance as well by 3 lengths. He also did his record with a 130 lbs on his back. So if that scenario took place. There would not be a single distance where Secretariat was within 3 lengths of the Bid. They don't call the Bid "the greatest horse to ever look through a bridle" for nothing. It is because he was. And he certainly never lost to horses like Onion and Phone out.
@@sl-rt5kv certainly a great one. Carried a 130 lbs or more 25 times. Something Secretariat never did. And Citation could never win with that threshold weight.
@@davidbracher8322 spectacular bid ran out of gas in the Belmont and lost the triple crown. Secretariat destroys the field and set the Belmont record. Oh that’s right, Secretariat holds all three records in the triple crown.
You have Zenyayta and Slew of Gold, but not Noor? How is that possible? Noor beat Citation 5 times in 5 tries. Held the world record for the classic 1 1/4 miles for a decade at 1:58.50...but I sure saw Citation on here. All Citation ever did was look at Noor's hind quarters get smaller and smaller in the distance. An oversight..Other than that, a pretty good rendition. Even had the underrated Skip Away..
Two amazing, Rachel Alexandria & Zenyatta. If only she hadn't broken her leg in that match race. Ruffian would be in my top 50. But the owners of Ruffian should *never* have put her into that match race IMO. Ruffian's style was to go to the lead and never give up the lead. It almost inspired her to race faster when other horses were closing around. The equine also said that she was panting too hard and really dehydrated. :(
The really questionable thing about Ruffian entering that match race was entering her (a 3-yr-old filly!) in an especially demanding 10-furlong race only 2 weeks after having run a 12-furlong race, the Coaching Club American Oaks. Foolish Pleasure, in contrast, was coming off a 4-week rest following the Belmont. These days, even that 4-week layoff would be minimal; even by the standards of the 70's, that 2-week rest is difficult to fathom under the circumstances. Plus the match was only Ruffian's 3rd race at over a mile. It was Foolish Pleasure's 7th race at more than a mile. I think she was the better horse, but he was the better seasoned. Her running style was perfectly suited for a match race, though. Match races are typically won by the pacesetter, and never by a horse coming from really far back. The accepted wisdom in such races is to go for the lead and try to keep it, exactly what Ruffian did naturally, anyway. A jockey doesn't rate a horse during a match race. For the match race against War Admiral, Tom Smith trained Seabiscuit to gun it out of the gate. Leroy Jolley did the same for Foolish Pleasure for the 1975 match race. Jolley knew that to beat Ruffian, she had to be challenged for the lead.
Friend honestly I think you embarrassed yourself in your comment when you put Bertrando in you're selection because Arazi the French SUPERSTAR beat him by 5L on the bridle & it could've been 12-14L if he was let loose to the wire but Arazi was pulled up just into Final Furlong with the rest of field you needed goggles to see them.

The word "American" in phrases like "Greatest American Horses" can be used in a sense of nationality or geography. So it's not usually offensive when people include Canadians in lists of "Greatest Americans" like we see in this video. The creator of this video may not have known about this, or may have simply meant "races conducted in America regardless of which country the horse came from." I'm not easily offended, but most Canadians are easily offended when it comes to American misunderstandings of Canada. By the way, horsetrack racing is really big in Canada. There are 18 racetracks in Ontario alone, which is double the number of racetracks as any state in the USA. However there is more of an emphasis on standardbred than thoroughbred horses probably because thoroughbred aren't hardy enough for tough weather and work conditions.
I know it’s going back a ways, but what about Colin? Unbeaten in 15 races, including 4 victories over the formidable Fair Play, Man O’War’s sire. Racing fans of the era thought of him as the greatest horse they has seen. Edit: You don’t have Discovery on your list either.
KELSO RAN ON SLOW SLOPPY TRACKS TOO. SOME MODERN HORSES HAVE TO RUN ON STEEL SHOES TOO. IT DOESN'T SLOW THEM UP MUCH AT ALL. WHEN THE SWITCH WAS MADE TO ALUMINUM SHOES, THE HORSES DID NOT START BREAKING RECORDS.
@@captainamericaamerica8090 No, tracks were sharply modernized beginning in the 1950s. And in the Spring of 1973, Secretariat’s Triple Crown year, good allowance horses were breaking track records across North America. Were they better than Man O’War? Anyway, my assertion is a lot easier to defend than yours. All I’m saying is that there were truly great horses not included on the list. That’s easier to defend than your belief that Kelso would beat any other horse that ever lived. That’s pretty unprovable when comparing horses born over 50 years apart. BTW, even if Kelso is better than Colin or Discovery, can’t they be on the same list in a lower slot?

You'll have to squeeze Authentic there next update. Also none of those horses ran a faster Derby or Preakness than Sham, other than Secretariat (Curlin's Preakness comes closest).
Slew was also one of my favorites his 1978 Jockey Club Gold Cup in my opinion is second only to Secretariat's Belmont. Most determined and courageous horse I ever saw. James Keeney
@@jameskeeney2032 yall keep sayin time. What happened to that time against Onion or Angie Light two horses in which Secretariat lost down the stretch to. Time isn't the only factor in horse racing
Although time is usually the standard of which great racehorses are measured it is meaningless if you don't win which was the case with Sham.If you take away the 1977 Swaps Stakes a race in which Slew should have never been entered he lost two races both by a nose and destroyed Affirmed in their two meetings and Affirmed was a better horse than Sham. Secretariat 's Belmont race was only possible because the pace of the first half was not fast but if you look at the 1978 Jockey Club Gold Cup the early pace was suicidal and for Slew to find the courage to make another run in the late stretch was incredible. So as you said the time which in Secretariat's case was phenomenal I dare say that if Sham had pushed him to a 45.1 half there would not have been a 2.24 final time. It is impossible to compare the races of the great horses because races set up differently due to competition, distance, track conditions, weight imposts and how fit the horse is at race time. Your point about Onion and Angle Light is well taken they probably would never have beaten Slew. Arguing about who is best is fun but its usually a matter of personal preference and there can be host of supporting stars but it's not a winnable argument James Keeney
@@jameskeeney2032 thank you. While time is an important factor as you just stated it isn't the only factor. Pace, track conditions, jockey, horse health, weather all play a factor in the outcome of a race.
Slew didn't run as fast a time in the Belmont as Affirmed because he didn't have to. Some horses are back off a little bit if they have a lead. Slew smashed Affirmed twice with the slower horse time wise. Which is why i am saying what i am saying. Like Slew in his Belmont was up 5 lengths. What is the point in winning by 10.A win by a nose or by 10 still nets the same result.

I was at that Preakness with my father. He's my favorite horse ever, just buried Sunday Silence in the Belmont. the breeders cup that year was a hell of a good race too!
*Easy Goer had Top 5 All time Talent* Top 5 talent? He sure didn't have the kind of talent that a horse like Round Table, ranked #17 in the Bloodhorse top 100, had. Round Table won 3 times as many races, 43, than the 14 races Easy Goer won. By the time Easy Goer retired at age 4, Round Table had already won 34 races. Round Table won on dirt, turf, east, west and all over the place. He won more races carrying between 130-136 pounds, 17, than Easy Goer won in a career that only consisted of carrying lesser weights. RT set 16 track, US, and World records. He did all of this running a meat grinder of a racing schedule that might have destroyed a horse like Easy Goer. To put it simply, Easy Goer's simply lacked the ability to win large numbers of major races that Round Table possessed. Sure RT had his off days, but he was the closest thing to an indestructible winning machine that I can think of.

Zenyatta isn't in top 50..
Barbaro never proved he was in the pantheon of top greats. Sorry. I fear he suffers a bit from Martyr Syndrome.
@@bkras483 videos don't lie, you can say whatever you want, history says otherwise, sorry but you cannot be right even when you think you are.
I recall as a kid coming up in Miami the Horses the term used to express the horse track or the race track were apart of the sports each broadcast had at least one race during the news .I use to love hearing Freddie Cappuccelli call those races to me Freddie was the best at it I try imitating him at times that voice I'll forget my part waited to were "Coming Into The Stretch
Capossela was the best. Much as I loved watching the horses run, I liked hearing Cappy's race calls even more. "It is now post time. And there off..."

What did I learn from this video? Tom Durkin was the best race caller ever...by far.
Tom Durkin outstanding but NOT by far, Dave Johnson also incredible race caller...Proof: listen to his 1988 Belmont Stakes call --- Risen Star..."Eddie Delohousee asks the son of Secretariat for speed and gets it" + last 1/8 mile ....

Greatest horse of all time, not even close, Secretariat, record times in all three of the triple crown races and may stand forever 47 years so far
He lost a lot of races to inferior horses see Wood Memorial, Woodward, Whitney etc with absolutely no excuses so on any given day the best ever yes over an entire career no

@@mikewarren1401 The only thing Secretariat and his jockey would see if they were running against Man o' War is the original Big Red's rear end lol. MoW isn't considered the Horse of the Century for nothing.
@@drudanng.8567 how’s that. MOW ran mile and a half in 2:28. Big red of 73 has no equal!!!
Really interesting post. Thanks.
I was bout to get mad seeing Easy Goer and no Sunday Silence in this list, but then I hear the "threatening presence" I was like oh better lol. He was clearly the better horse of them both.
Whirlaway, the 1941 Triple Crown Winner should had been on that list...
He was sent to France, which to me was a huge mistake. RIP Whirly!
Whirlaway is there. He's at the end of the video because I put them in alphabetical order. A quality Triple Crown winner!

Hence why I think Secretariat is super overrated
Where's Sir Barton?...
you're so right , Sir Barton should definitely be in there he never got the respect he deserved !
My favorite quote:
Once upon a time, there was a horse named Kelso. But only once.
I don't think people today can wrap their heads around Kelso's 5 Jockey club gold cup victories. The equivalent today would be a horse winning 5 Breeders cups classics. Something no horse will ever do.
KELSO ALSO BROKE HIS OWN WORLD RECORDS TOO
@Don't Bet Chalk 1997 Many of his losses were when he carried 15+ pounds more than the rest of the field.
Forego doesn't get the credit he deserves, last of the Great Weight Carriers. He carried ridiculous weights and won Graded stakes.
Being a student of the 90s I am partial to Serena's Song and Formal Gold, and would've ranked them ahead of Justify.
Ruffian is over valued due to sentiment because of her death...
She beat NOBODY. Lady's Secret best dirt mare of all time..
Zenyatta was the all time queen. Where was Forego?

I'll say. One race one horse give me Seattle Slew vs anyone. They will be in a fight of their life to beat Slew

Arguing about who is best is fun but its usually a matter of personal preference and there can be host of supporting stars but it's not a winnable argument

Sure RT had his off days, but he was the closest thing to an indestructible winning machine that I can think of.

boy you need an education in greatest racehorses!!! Missing Lady's Secret (only horse male or female to win 8 G1 races in a single season) and Genuine Risk (Ky Derby winner and the one and only female to win or place in all 3 triple crown races)
All great horses but I disagree with the order. Rachel Alexander put together a grueling 3 year old campaign that not many other horses can do. Secretariat is the best. Rachel Alexandra, Zenyatta, Ruffian and Personal Ensign for Fillies.
Lol it was in alphabetical order
Shared Belief :(
I agree,,,,what could have been.
No way California chrome
No Round Table........80 percent of those horses could not even run with the Table and Shoe maker.....check out his report.....this list is a joke
Round Table is there. I guess you didn't watch the video properly.
No Dortmund?

He was a nice horse.. but the message is, there’s only so many spaces for the top horses..
Dortmund?...You obviously must be Joking
@joe chrow Well duhhh 😜😄
No Thumbs Up for any list that does not have Secretariat as NUMBER ONE!
SECRETARIAT IS the Greatest!!! Stop fooling around.
What about man o war??
Highly arguable. Very highly. One race does not make a great.
No way. Its Ruffian, she's has never lost a race.
@@theOlLineRebeldo you talk about the triple crown?
If Ruffian didn't broken down, she too would have participated at triple crown race.
