  • In European cities, young people of Arab descent often see themselves as socially, economically and culturally excluded from their immediate environment. In some cases, they are also vulnerable to radicalisation.
In Belgium, the densely populated Brussels suburb of Molenbeek is home to 100,000 residents, many of them first and second-generation immigrants. It gained notoriety in 2015 as the home of some of the Bataclan attackers in Paris. In Sweden, Muslims in the Stockholm suburb of Rinkeby say that authorities have abandoned them, leaving them vulnerable to far-right racist attacks, while police dismiss suggestions that they have failed to protect immigrants. And in Denmark, in the Copenhagen suburb of Norrebro, communities speak of a social hierarchy that places Danes at the top of the socioeconomic ladder and Arabs at the bottom.
In The Other Face Of Europe, we visit these three cities to get an insight into the issues and to hear directly from those living with it every day: radicalised young people, criminal gang members, fighters returning from Syria and their families, as well as politicians, experts, psychologists, social workers and security officers. What is at the root of youth radicalisation in these communities? And how do significant influences at play - such as right-wing anti-immigrant politics, negative media coverage and social deprivation in the poor suburbs of relatively prosperous cities - deepen these tensions?

Easy targets for one, given 9/11 and Islamaphobia... the other is that your NATO actions in the sender countries have created a Middle East resistance, if you will, using religion, language, etc., essentially identity, as recruitment tools. That ME resistance, whom you call terrorists, are hitting back, and that in turn leads your government to turn to more propaganda, and you are now angry. First, stop your military from going overseas. Then stop NATO bases from being used as staging areas for attacks on Middle East and North Africa (MENA). Finally, allow people there to run their own governments and keep their profits for their own contruction. The most political involvement in Moroccan Islam is that the Moroccan king is the so called leader of the faithful, but even that no one takes seriously.

No because the westerns in the Middle East are not discriminated against or marginalised. In fact they often hold the best positions in jobs and live in closed developed communities with some of the best schools and hospitals in comparison to the local population. This is partly because they are not discriminated against by the locals, they often hold high positions in the European companies operating in these countries and these countries treat them like demi God's because they need the western investment in their counties for them to develop. Another reason is because the corrupt leaders of these Middle Eastern countries continue to take bribes from western investors. And finally and the worst reason the lasting ideology from years of colonial rule that the white man is King.

raised in an Islmic country as a minority. They make up 70% + of the population. Prime Minister, Multiple Sultans ( King ), car import licenses... all belong to this group of people. There's also Uni admission quota, scholarship quota, head of organization quota, subsidies for them. The minority group generally pays everything a little more than the majority even though we all share the same nationality.. yet we still get blamed for their poverty... The problem with them is that they've chosen to spend most of their time on unmarketable skill without realizing that it comes at a cost; Education and career opportunities loss especially with MNC. They thought that they should deserve the best when they have worked the hardest to appease the god. When the reality doesn't match their expectation, they do stuffs to others to "correct" it. Hope that helps one to understand how this group of people think and act... We the minority knew that we can do very little to change the worsening unfair treatment, so we always prepare ourselves for global market while they are trying hard to beat us at local market. That's our secret to they never overtaking us. Nevertheless most of the talented minority have already fled the country.

I don't believe in excluding anyone, but I frankly don't see how to solve these issues unless people are willing to see both sides and the fact is that young Arabs are excluded because their parents often don't allow them the same liberties and privilege's as European youth, compounded with fact that other religious groups often get blamed for the blights of their community, it is easy to understand why they end up hating the native populations. But bottom line is that they have some issues of their own they need to work out before I even have a chance of inviting anybody out for a beer. Perhaps if they'd allow their daughters to date out side of their own community there could be some more integration. These are seriously the biggest hurdles to fix this problem.

I must say something about molenbeek here because I think this is pretty one sided. To start it is correct that it houses the most people with a Muslim background in the capital region of Brussels. The second correct statement is that is was one of the places where a lot of migrant workers for the coal mines lived witch where people from all over the wold including Europeans. At the time it was a cheap place to live. The last year's the prices of the property's even in molenbeek have skyrocketed and can't be paid for alone. For this reason a lot of people live with multiple family's in small homes. This plays in to the way most outsiders see molenbeek as a segregated community. They eat, sleep and work all in the same place witch makes it difficult to be integrated. A lot of these people get a allowance from the government because they have a lot of kids and have a low income witch means that crime is a good way to upgrade their living standards quickly. I wouldn't put this totally on how the community structured itself because the political left leaning mayor's have taken advantage of these people's struggle by having guaranteed votes. They sell the place as multicultural and diverse but close their eyes when a problem arises. It is been so bad they even blocked police actions to ensure that they keep a favorable face against the local community I fear of losing their power. It is a complex matter I know but tbh when I hear that's a random bypasser gets knocked in coma and they say it was a young group of belgian teenagers I mostly know it mostly are 2 generation migrants. Witch isn't good that I think that but that means it isn't racism anymore but just the way it is atm. I have friends who live in molenbeek who I consider to be my best friends and come from these communities and even they say it is going to far. I love my city Brussels and hope everything will work out but I'm scared for the more extreme violence that has been rising for the last few years

Everybody in every country, no matter what race, color or religion who is not born into wealth has to struggle to earn and survive, work extra hard in order to get ahead, always study and improve themselves. Getting a well paying job and establishing your career isn't easy for anyone, anywhere. Migrants that head to the west truly believe in a 'get rick quick scheme' that as soon as they land they will make good money and get free social benefits. (except Asians and Indians as they are programmed from young to work hard and not complain) As migrants pile up in cities and add to the local 'lazy population' that hasn't pursued a career, doesn't really want to work, or can't hold a job, cities fester and people get uneasy. Then we hear about it through the media portrayed as 'racism' and 'minorities being marginalized' ect ect, how about telling the world about the success stories instead? The simple truth is that overpopulation is causing all the problems

After bringing them here they and the government did not take their responsibilities to integrate the community as a whole, through policies. Instead, they kept the new migrants into segregated neighborhoods close to the factories, and they kept them dumb. So, these migrants and their children would be and stay like that for cheap labour.

Statistically...the reason people get together are because or their similarities..the reason they part are due always to differences...that will never change (from human behavior perspective) so through the social lens, this would also be true. The biggest beliefs that bond or device are religion, political pursuasion and financial differences (each groups of how money is managed and used etc ). So it would be right to assume that inviting people who have more than one of these differences with their host community, would mean their will never be one community with similar cohesive ideals. Only between odd individuals who choose different paths than they are bought up with. This is sad but over and over it proves to be true. It's like folk dancing..everyone in a local folk dance, dance with enjoyment to the same dance, but mixing dances would take some doing for it to be a cohesive dance.

Why don't you show the non-muslim suffering in muslim countries? Why as a non-muslim (infidel) do i have to observe muslim custom because i'm in a muslim country? One typical example would be how you treat infidels during Ramadan, waking up at 3:30am to have my breakfast and eat or drink nothing during the whole day until 6:30pm so as not to offend the fasting population. These same people then come to Europe and expect us to adopt to them because we already adopted when we worked in their countries. When i move to a country I accept their custom because i'm just a visitor, albeit for a number of years. All you show here is contrary to that, they want the society to adapt to them.

If the authorities would take care of those who have been in Syria, it must have a social engagement program in order to send these young people to military bases with a commitment on their part and not only have the ideology in mind. ! It would take a group of people with special training to train these young people in order to produce the opposite effect which made them leave the comfort of the family. And those who have been indoctrinated too much should be sent to an island where there will be militarized training for as long as necessary. I believe that immigration has been ill-suited to arrive in a country with opposite kinds of life. It is also necessary to clarify who benefits from the crime and the sums of money paid out by Saudi Arabia and Iran, the two major producers of terrorists. And there are those alongside who form clans in order to make the lives of others impossible. There is hope!

Interesteing point. You have the right that is given to you by that state. For now, Europe practice glorious ethic of accepting foreigners and giving them opportunities. And patience with them as well. However, Europe is not a good choice for everyone, as they have their own history and value system.

Will Islamic countries will ever admit that they made their share of mass murdering, mass deportations, enslavement and all that until the 20th century? Or funding militias that are killing of thousands of natives in Mozambique or in DRC, or in Nigeria nowadays? Nope. Hypocrisy at its finest.

In my homeland Germany public media broadcasts documentaries like this regularly. Racism, anti-semitism and neo-colonial thinking are still big problems here, no doubt about that.
