a definitive ranking of influencer scams
hey everyone welcome back to my channel- long time no see! today we’re going to be doing another ranking video!!!! its been a lot longer than i thought it had been since we’ve done one so i thought it was about time we rank something. if you’re new to this series we basically just take a random topic and rank it based on the customized tiers, we’ve done them for face masks (definitively ranking the weird wild west of face masks), 90 day fiance couples (definitively ranking 90 day fiance couples) and of course matthew morrison’s crimes (definitively ranking the crimes of matthew morrison) but today… we’re looking at ~scammers~
I actually got the idea for this video during one of my streams when we were talking about youtuber/influencer scams and thought it had some pretty strong ranking potential. I don’t think you guys need me to tell you that the influencer world has no shortage of scammery SOO today we’re going to be definitively ranking influencer scams. Obviously we won’t be ranking every one that’s happened because that would take ages.. lol but i think i chose a pretty decent range of scams from the past like Caroline Calloway’s instagram workshop disaster, Gabbie Hanna and Tana Mongeau’s Kenza makeup brush scandal plus more recent ones like the rise of crypto scams, “growth courses” and who could forget the iconic ~bath water~ and tanacon nightmare
I’ve made an exploring the world of video on influencer scams before (exploring the world of youtuber scams) which i’d definitely recommend checking out if you want to hear the scams in this video explained more in depth, i opted to only give backstory to the ones that really needed the context just because we would be here forever otherwise lol so if you’re just hearing about a lot of these there’s also that video you can check out too!
As always while these lists are definitive for me they don’t have to be definitive for u! one of my fav parts about these videos is seeing people do their own rankings in the comment section so if u would have placed anyone differently let me know in the comments down below but hopefully you guys enjoy the video and i’ll see you in the comment section :)

Unpopular opinion: Belle Delphine's bath water wasn't a scam. She sold the product that she was advertising. I don't know if it was overpriced cause I don't know the average cost of used bathwater 🤷🏻

People are calling it a scam not because of the price, but actually because some people were obsessed enough to evaluate that water under the microscope to actively prove it didn't contain her DNA, meaning she never actually bathed in it.

@Ada Guedes One of the topics we could choose from for the paper was to discuss identity in art, and my main thesis was essentially how the art industry is riddled with racism and misogyny etc. The point where I mention the bath water was in comparison to a famous art piece from the 70s (if I remember correctly it was a while ago) called Artist’s Shit. It was literally this dudes shit in a bunch of cans and they sold for millions! They are still considered high value art pieces and were praised for being “Shock art” and “redefined what art is” blah blah blah. I made the connection to Bath Water bc Delphine herself said that the Gamer Girl bath water wasn’t meant to be viewed as a product and more of a shock art/performance art piece. The point in all of this was that poopman got rich and was praised for his shock art, and Delphine was highly criticized for it (although she did benefit from it financially) to the point of people actively trying to get her social media accounts banned. That’s the gist of it but I did have to define the term “egirl” in an academic paper lmao

I would switch Belle Delphine's "Gamer Girl Bathwater" and Caroline Calloway's writing workshop. I'm not even sure I agree the former is a scam, tbh. The guys who forked over $30 for a jar of allegedly used bathwater knew what they were getting. Caroline's fans didn't and when sh*t hit the fan, she tried to gaslight them live on social media.

The “it’s free, just pay for shipping” scam is the WORST. One of the most infuriating versions of this that I encountered was a company selling Pride flags using this method. At the time, I was a gaybie and was in the phase of buying lots of pride merchandise because it was the only way to express myself while in the closet. So of course upon seeing “Free pride flags” I was going to click on the ad. Imagine my disappointment to see that they cost the same (if not more) than other pride flags and it was just hidden in the shipping cost.

What isn't a scam but most definitely felt like it was... Zoella's 2017 Christmas Advent Calendar. People paid £50 for 12 little doors which included; a pen, a little notebook, some glitter, a candle, a fluffy keychain, a spray and other more stuff that you could honestly get straight from the poundshop. I have no problem with a £50 calandar, IF you get what you pay for. Not little knick knacks.

My personal favourite are when your an artist on Instagram and you get comments saying stuff like “DM for a promotion I love your art” and they don’t even like the post and the promotion costs $20 + depending on what you pay for.
