Seriously, just try handing these kids a freaking tape measure, 4 mics, and then ask for a Glyn Johns method setup.😅🤣

About using a church-based studio; be aware of the churches construction materials. They're typically setup to help with amplifying acoustic sound and, don't generally catch sound well. I have recorded in a small church, before. The amount of sound bleed was UNREAL. Though larger churches/church chains tend to be treated a bit better.

I came here to say this. Traditional church construction was designed to allow a voice to be heard anywhere in the building without amplification, and while that became less of a concern when amplification became readily available, designers rarely considered the acoustics in their plans. Making it pretty was more important than making it sound good for probably 75 years. Modern acoustic engineering and design is still rarely considered in church buildings. My thought is that unless you want to do an obscene amount of renovation, you may be better off finding a storefront. Old churches are cool, but it'll be a huge pain to make it work.

You caught me off guard with the Axe Music comment. That was my go to store back in the 80's when I lived in Edmonton, when bands were on the road all over the west for three months at a stretch. They treated musicians like family. If tours got extended, they'd ship us out things we were getting low on. Strings, tubes, sticks, etc.
One time, I was with a band hired to play Norman Wells, NWT (look it up, WAY up) for a month. Our first night, my JCM-800 blows up, and I'm forced to use my Rockman to get through the night. I get on the phone with Axe first thing in the morning and they shipped me a new head immediately, and it arrived at the airport before our first set that day. Amazing service and people!
I have a good relationship with some staff at my local L&M, but they're very restricted with bending rules (like borrowing something before you buy) and are forced to adhere to the laws from the corporate overlords more than ever these days. The Walmart of music stores.
Oh, and your JCM-800 comment... I never used dirt pedals back then, so the amp was fully cranked as intended and that's where the decent tone was, IMO. Loud as fuck though, or so the soundman said, so I'd lay the cab on its back facing the ceiling. Overrated? Yes. Was it guaranteed to blow up every 2-3 months? Damn straight! Eventually, I realized that I'm more of a Fender amp guy and prefer the smaller amps. You can crank them without making enemies.

If the makers wanted more money, they would have to _make a new thing_ . This, *PAY US FOREVER* model really pisses me off in almost every case, and people who want to get out of that by any means necessary get very little stinkeye from me. That said I do believe in paying people who make a good product a reasonable recomp, realising that 'reasonable' is entirely subjective.

I have no moral issue with piracy personally. That said I'm from the old internet culture and I suspect that has something to do with my thoughts on it.
However I buy all my stuff because it's just easier at the end of the day (other than when I have to deal with ilok customer service). But there is no moral reason I do it it's purely the fact that I know I'll have that license forever and be able to get support when something goes wrong.
For young people and those just getting started I think piracy is the reason we have seen such an explosion on the hobby side of audio / music and I believe that's a net positive. I will agree if you're making money on your shit then pony up and go legit. Think of all the hit songs we'd miss from the last 10 years if it wasn't for 16 year olds with pirated versions of FL12 lmao.

When I was young and living in Montreal, Steve’s was my go-to music store. I started going there back when St. Antoine’s street was still called Craig (that should give you an idea of how old I am). I live in St. Catharines now, and L&M is the only music store in town. That’s okay with me, though, because I find their staff knowledgeable, friendly, courteous, and they have a great selection of gear. They know me quite well, because I spend a lot of time (and money) there. They have a generous return policy, and reasonable prices (usually). I used to live in Burlington, and I like the store there as well. If the store here doesn’t have an item in stock, they can usually get one shipped from the Burlington or Hamilton store. My needs are satisfied, and I don’t find them to be like Walmart at all. The last time I felt the need to go to Steve’s in Toronto was in 2003, when I bought a beautiful Takamine LTD (the Eagle). Anyway, I like L&M (and no, I don’t work there).

I'll admit I often use cracked stuff when I can find it (not a lot of Mac cracks around), especially when the vendor doesn't offer a trial version and expects you to pop for it without knowing if it'll even do what you want. Then if I like it I buy it, if I don't I uninstall it. 100% agree people need paying for their work, but if they're not going to offer refunds - or at least make it extremely difficult to get one - because it's a digital downloadable purchase then they should be offering the chance to try it first. If it's only a few bucks, fair enough. But when we're talking $50-$200 that's when it gets unreasonable. I know plugin vendors are often better at that than software vendors, but there's some plugins out there that I've never gone near because I can't try them first. I may love them, but I'll never know.

About cracked cracked plugins, my view on this is if you're a hobbyist, using cracked plugins to experiment and see what you like to work with while you save to buy real licences is acceptable as long as you really plan on paying for it at a certain point, ideally before making money out of it. I've used cracked plugins for years while I learned how to track and mix. Now, after many years of fiddling and buying stuff little by little, I can now say I am 100% legal on everything I use. I did try quite a lot of plugins and instrument libraries before making my final choices though, but everything I now own is useful in my workflow. I still consider myself as a hobbyist. I recorded many of my friends over karaoke tracks, but I can count on one hand how many complete songs I have recorded (I mean with all the instruments), so I still have things to work out. ;)
Anyway, nice job Glenn. Keep up the good work. BTW, I have a question: I use BFD3 for my drums because I really don't have the space for a drum kit, much less recording one. Is it better to use the provided room and ambiance mics or should I build my own by sending the close mics to reverb buses (with other processing such as saturation and EQ)?

While there were some concerns about his plans for the place, most just cared that he'd put the place to good use and not trash it. A lot of peoples' time and money go into those old church buildings, in addition to a lot of their community and (sadly) identity being centered around it. But in the end, he didn't have to pander to the religious crowd, but rather he just showed off his cool work and said, "I just need a good place that will allow me to do more of this."

Hi Glenn, it's clear that your channel is aimed at the recording end of the rock/metal music, But what is your input regards live sound techniques. eg. Amp and drum Miking, PA mixing/ balancing, what's is and isn't adequate gear for the appropriate venue etc.
If you don't have any previous vids on this is there any other channels you can recommend , as I feel there is always something to learn to make a live situation better if you are a band that has to self set up for gigs.

Generally speaking piracy is a service problem, something I've run into in the past is paying for software and being both unable to get a refund and unable to use it because the DRM threw a fit so I wound up downloading a cracked version anyways. Some of this can be mitigated with demo versions or even better a half decent refund policy. If a company isn't confident enough in their software to offer a demo or refund then I'm not confident enough in their software to purchase it and I will absolutely download a cracked version for testing if there's no alternative products. If there is an alternative I'll vote with my wallet and use the alternative instead because to me a perpetual license with no or very little DRM as well as demos and refund policies are far more important than having the "best" tools.
    Cheers from NS.

      > If a company isn't confident enough in their software to offer a demo or refund then I'm not confident enough in their software to purchase
That's how it should be. They don't give a demo-I don't give a shit about their product.
      > I will absolutely download a cracked version for testing if there's no alternative products
Being consistent with the previous statement, I would never use a software application that doesn't let me to evaluate it before purchase, doesn't matter if I can get a cracked version or not. I will not even try to search for it, and I have a very hard time recalling a software company that doesn't offer any kind of trial: 99% of them do, even fucking Adobe does, and some vendors like Harrison in fact make free plugins, you just pay to fully unlock the GUI-all the DSP stuff just works, and you can adjust all the parameters in generic VST interface. This argument is nothing, just like any other pro-piracy shit you and others say. And there is also a significant portion of open source and plugins, which do the job just as good as most of paid stuff. I mainly use proprietary DSP, though I work exclusively on Linux systems, but I also use a lot of open source and free-as-in-beer plugins that do the job well, and not because I can't afford stuff (plugins that work on Linux are reasonably priced), but because the open source and free plugins can be actually awesome. I'm thinking of making a video about recording, mixing, and mastering a song on a fully open source software setup, including the operating system. That should shed some light on a myth that you need expensive paid plugins and the “biggest” version of Pro Tools to sound good.

That said, I fucking hate iLok and absolutely appreciate the irony that it's created such a resurgence in piracy. Not to avoid paying, but to be able to use plugins without the fucking headache of dongles or cloud servers being down or WiFi being spotty at a show or upgrading a computer ect ect.

For the person confused about the guitar tone in with an amp sim, start clean and slowly add distortion if you want distortion. There are usually two problems, one is too much distortion and the other is fizz. There are videos on how to get rid of fizz in the distortion. "Many" people have mentioned that guitar players have added distortion, especially too much distortion when trying to copy older acts such as AC/DC. AC/DC doesn't use distortion, but every cover band tends to add a lot of distortion according to those "many" people.

I can understand RUclipsrs needs to be against piracy for threat of legal action.
I am not a RUclipsr with a huge following so I'm more at liberty to say shit like this.
I would never have gotten into music production without pirating software. As others have mentioned, it's a pipeline. Those who are legitimately passionate about music production SHOULD buy the software, and most do. But these companies were never going to make money off of the people who never intended to buy their products anyway.
I think piracy is okay if you're using it on a trial basis. But if you get serious, you SHOULD buy the stuff.

Re Canadian Music Stores, you make a great point about the Canuck base being very small overall. TBH, we have what, L&M, Tom Lee and maybe Steve's? L&M have been the Borg for decades swallowing up all the smaller stores but honestly, I rented and then bought my first guitars from them way way back from their old location on Bloor Street and then their 4th Ave location in Vanc for years and just hung with them up until I started buying online, but I'm grateful for them b/c as the saying went back in the 80's "if you can get credit from L&M you can't get it anywhere!" But now, I'd say 90 % easily of my recording and guitar gear is used, that I've found killer killer deals on all of it. Unfortunately cash is king but you gotta have it to get the deals. I live in the Okanagan now and there aren't any decent music stores out here.

Church conversion: DO IT! They seem to have a great track record for it. The church should provide you with tons of space (comparatively, at least), and have decent enough acoustics from the start. I’m interested in seeing (and hearing) that happen.
