  • Bonnie Raitt is many things-a Rock ‘n Roll Hall-of-Famer, an incredible blues guitarist, an underrated songwriter, and a fierce advocate for social justice. Bonnie was offered her first record deal as a college student in 1971 after a reporter saw her play an early gig in NYC, but it took almost two decades before she peaked commercially with her tenth album, "Nick Of Time." Throughout her long career Bonnie has helped preserve American blues music by recording songs from little-known but classic songwriters.
On today’s episode Bruce Headlam talks to Bonnie Raitt about her meticulous song-selection process and the inspiration behind the tunes she wrote for her new album, "Just Like That." Bonnie also talks about a somewhat awkward dinner she had with Prince. And how her slide guitar technique will forever be tied to giving her brother the bird.

What a great interviewer! This guy asked the kind of questions that artists thrive on, not the usual pre-conceived and clueless lines that most do. He clearly had done his homework and was listening and responding to her. At several points during the interview he surprised and inspired her with his insight into her artistry, which compelled her to give her best to him. Bravo!

Bonnie opened up for Stevie Ray Vaughn and I really connected with her. Angel from Montgomery and Nobody's Girl and The Ones We Couldn't Be. Hard to choose a favorite!

Interesting interview. Could relate to a couple of things. I recall about how piano lessons were taught back in the day. They could be pretty rigid. I agree that if piano was taught in a way that kids could learn more contemporary things they like they might do better with it.
Also like O'Henry - a favorite quote: "the creature comforts are the last refuge of the complex" - opens up many days with a cup of coffee.
Wishing Bonnie success in her future endeavors and with her new album - thanks for all the great music.

I saw Bonnie Raitt in 1977 when I was 16 years old at an outside concert at Pinecrest country club in Shelton, CT. I have been a fan since even before then. She is a unique legend.

Seeing that John Raitt is Bonnie's father, it's amazing how her singing style is so far removed from his. His precise "proper" way of singing ( not my cup of tea) is a million miles from the way Bonnie delivers a song. Interesting, seeing how Bonnie grew up hearing her dad sing all those great old show songs, it's amazing that Bonnie hasn't - I don't think-recorded any show songs.
