There was a moment during the cabaletta she seemed to have a scared look, but I think she was just concentrating on the hardest part for her. She actually sings this quite nicely.
Although the role of Verdi's Leonora isn't well suited to Ms. Fleming's vocal weight and color, here she offers a very credible, convincing and satisfying performance of Tacea la notte... Fidelity to the demands of "The Verdian Line" are on full display and handled elegantly. Brava! The Met is very lucky to have her on their roster..
Ms. Fleming, if you're reading this.....I've heard many versions, and your's is my favorite by far. Dee-vine. Brava. I often wish that you would have sung (on stage) this, and 'Maria di Rohan'......
Despite her usual stylistic liberties, Fleming does a lovely job with this aria. I'd love to hear more dramatic Verdi out of her mouth, even if she doesn't perform the roles on stage.
@@operabilia totally.. and as she once said in a interview in 1969: it will be a day where this mosquito singers will sing everything and wont understand how the composer wanted their creations to be played..... we have here the example...
What makes Renee Fleming stand out among other sopranos is her consistant vocal line, from bottom to top. I hear in her vocal production an even endless solid line. One feels that she has no difficulty with breath in long phrases and no change in 'timbre', be they with trills or without. This tells me that she has a solid technique which makes her performances wonderful, when not 'sung out' due to the excess of appointments, be they musical or other. I quibble with another detail which has to do with her real feeling of text as she portrays the various personages of the works that she is singing. Opera is one thing, oratorio another and the most exigent of classical vocal music, the various composers of concert chamber music, Beethoven, Brahms, Schubert, Wolf, Mozart Debussy only to mention a few.
This song does not suit her voice type and still she sung it absolutely wonderfully. The technique and skill involved in the way she sang this aria is incredible. Truly one of the greats.
I admire Miss Fleming.......But, its just so difficult to listen to todays sopranos when Im spoiled with L.Price, Callas, Sutherland, Caballe......even Crespin, and M Price.......
