The 'Joe' she's singing to (the guy sitting on the stool) is Joseph Volpe who was General Manager of the Metropolitan Opera in New York from 1990 to 2006. This was the finale of the gala in his honour.
When I have sung my songs to you I’ll sing no more T’would be a sacrilege to sing at another door We’ve worked so hard to hold our dreams just you and I I could not share them all again I’d rather die With just the thought that I had loved so well so true That I could never sing again That I could never never sing again except to you!.... (oh, this is too beautiful....and I dedicate this wonderful rendition to my sons)
It pains me how negative people are in these comments. It is harmful to compare singers rather than just enjoying the art that is being performed here. it's time to just start enjoying life in the moment rather than looking to critique every single thing when it is not needed.
I was just about to say…not sure what people are complaining about, but the musical lines in this always amaze me. Renee always has a unique interpretation, and her breaths are so intentional and you can tell she really wants to display her gratitude to someone who is never center stage-really the essence of performing-and the goal to hopefully convey so well that a mistake or two shows the raw, unedited nature of a live performance.
Reading some of the comments reminds me of the so-called self identified musical snobs who actually don't know much of what they are talking about. In today's world there is no room for snobbery of any kind. What little minds. Grow up. Let's see you on the stage singing. Renee is a superb singer and musician and person. Something some of you may want to know is that she did start out as a Jazz singer. The leader of the jazz band encouraged her to become classically trained because he recognized how fabulous she is!
They come across like that snob that, in response to Milnes' wife saying she "knew Sherrill Milnes" said that she had heard Milnes sing before, and didn't think SHE was that good.
how is she so perfect!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! like!!!!! her voice is so gorgeous and she's obviously worked so very hard and she's so amazing!!!!!!!!!!! renee fleming ur my idol!!!!!!!!!!!!
It is subjective to compare singers from another century because Singing as an art from is evolving and the understanding of aesthetics of it too. Therefore, we must grow our tastes together, stay in line with the new. I love Rene, she sings beautifully.
Budd, you are exactly right! There is NO room for snobbery of any kind and it is my opinion that this constant focus on the negative when it comes to live stage performance, instead of the overwhelming positives, will eventually lead to the disintegration of this medium altogether. And as Budd suggested to those who can do nothing but criticize, by all means, feel free to record yourself singing this song for all the world to hear. I'm sure Ms. Fleming will be humbled by your rendition.
Elizabeth Connell, the great South African soprano (part of the company who opened the Sydney Opera house) sang this in her recitals as an encore. Her performance of this is on youtube somewhere and is worth a listen.
I've to say I was far moved by that performance than this or any other's I have heard so far. She simply floats, and her glissandos are just right (to me). Others' constant scooping (apologies to Renee) compromises the flow/fluidity of the melody, in my opinion, which Connell allows to soar smoothly and grandly.
i do not understand the people saying this sounds bad but then i am not that much of a singer myself. at least not this style. but she moved me from the first phrase. i remember the first time i heard her sing, at the end of a play almost a decade ago. her voice moved me incredibly then and it does here as well. graceful
Those comments are a bit hyperbolic. But she does have a tendency to be rather fussy and mannered in how she phrases and enunciates words. It's the sort of thing that would be corrected if a student were to do it. But she's allowed to sing that way because she is she.
@@jadeking3263 Lmao I don’t remember specifically but i either got a 99 or 100. I’ve done NYSSMA for three years (supposed to be four, but covid) and got 28/28, 99/100, and 100/100 but I don’t actually remember which year was which. 16 now :)

Barbra Streisand once was quite angry her breathing was deleted from her recording of one of her first albums. I think it's interesting. At least we know it's not canned.
ya know, this was good, but there has been another version that is for four tenor voices, and it is just much nicer. The lower voices just have a warmer and deeper resonance, and the lyrics meld with the timbre more. Why is it that every rendition I find on youtube feature female voices? Such a bummer.
It's not because she is not good at jazz or pop :) She was just trained as a classical singer, so she is way better when it comes to lyrics songs ;) If you ask a pop singer to sing a lied of Schubert, I bet it would not be a very famous performance :P unless they studied the voice style for quite a time of course.
Impressive but unmoving. Hammy and melodramatic. A diva giving a performance. Listen to Flagstad sing this confession of true love with simplicity and sincerity.
This is not great, liz o connell sings this far better and she was 66 and died 6 months after singing it in concert, give it a try it is far better and more emotional
Oh dear the voice does not sound to be in a good state, tired sounding, and why does she almost speak instead of sing in the lower register; something she does in other recent recordings
This woman's voice is like the ray of light from heaven.

Irrespective of people's opinions of how she compares to others, this performance is elegant, and beautifully expressive

This woman is outstanding.❤️
Yes! She certainly is!!!

Marvelous song, stunning performance. I can’t help but coming and coming again.

Wie immer ist die Stimme der Fleming an Schönheit, Klang und einfühlsamer Präsentation unübertroffen !
Omygosh, how can she sig straight from her heart and still sound perfect? :)
It’s a learned skill!
Imagine having Renée Fleming sing this song to you! Wow wow! I would be in Heaven!!
This is just sooo nice in her voice.
This is absolutely perfect!
Bravo and beautiful.

Ilustrado649 sad too because Elizabeth Connell died shortly after her farewell concert.
It's more than worth a listen. It's definitive. And it was the last encore of her last concert before dying of lung cancer a few months later.
Marvelous.

Beautifully sung! This song, I believe, was written for the legendary
John McCormack for his farewell concerts at the end of his career.
Increíble !!! AIDA SE QUEDA CON RADAMES .AMNERIS LOS ENTIERRA VIVOS A AMBOS
AL FINAL NADIE GANA 😮
A lovely heartfelt rendition of this beautiful song.
Gorgeous song!!
I get to sing this song in my studio class next week.. I'm kinda of excited!!
i singing this in my vocal lesson :D i love this song
Maravillosa .¡¡¡¡¡¡
This is lovely...
Incomparável,alta sensibilidade e expressão,maravilhosa vóz!!!!! Brazil
I was looking up Renee Fleming and clicked on this and I just realized this is the song I was gonna do for solo contest! Haha. :)
Hannah Carlson how did the solo contest go? Have you heard of any other good opera singers to look up next?
i love the lyrics "When I have sung my songs to you, I'll sing no more" i quote that all the time! XD
Thank You..
I find nothing wrong with the sound, it's simply beautiful in my opinion
@MezzoDiva
I agree :). I'm sure both are more impressive and breath taking in person.....could you imagine... ahhh I'd cry of happiness!!
Love that dress.
@chorusinger
It went very well, Thank you for the encouragement!
Where and when was this? She sounds great!
This was the Volpe Gala, when he retired. This gala is really emotional.
this will be one of my audition songs
mine as well!
Well face it she has to breath eventually!
She is such an amazing singer!
Love her!

I’m supposed to sing this for a solo... I’m 13 wish me luck

@PandaPhantom HOLY COW it's impressive though...in it's own way! ;)

Even if you sang this half as good as Renee did on this recording you will be the hit of your class.
Hope it went well

Look at Deborah Voigt

Because he wrote it for soprano.
What’s wrong with Soprano voices?? I think this rendition is lovely!! ( But it IS being sung by Renée, so of COURSE it is beautiful!!!)
I think she was off a bit at the beginning, however, aren't we all at some point in time?
Renee at her best. This is the type of song repertoire for her. She isn't really very good at jazz or pop or Broadway.
I guess you haven't listened to her new album, "Broadway". It is fabulous!!
"RUSSIA UKRAINE WAR"? BY PROFESSOR WALTER VEITH AND MARTIN SMITH YOU TUBE POWERFUL POWERFUL WATCH FROM SOUTH AFRICA... TRUTH ALWAYS WINS ❤️🙏🏾❤️
Florence Foster Jenkins
No I think it's Deborah Voigt!!
Miss America pageant-style singing. Do yourself a favor and listen to the late Elizabeth Connell, who sings this as well as it could possibly be sung.
Well, better anyway than the "Tacea la notte placida" that she did sing during the gala.
Impressive but unmoving. Hammy and melodramatic. A diva giving a performance. Listen to Flagstad sing this confession of true love with simplicity and sincerity.
What makes you think Renée is not sincere??
Beautiful, but still not Ponselle.
wow she does such a nice job :) ....her dress isn't very pretty but her voice sure is
Listen to Flagsted sing the same song, and Fleming will sound like an amateur who loves to croon.
frederik451000 why say that. There is no need. They were and are both wonderful.
She makes a musical mistake towards the beginning, and O Lord that kitty mewing. Blech!
....shhhhhhh
I am reminded how much I disliked her singing. All that jazzy cooing- dreadful.
So DON’T LISTEN TO IT!!! There ARE those of us who LOVE Renée’s singing!
