  • In this week's video I'm throwing 100 tiny stoneware vases that'll be available as a limited edition run for my YSP, (Yorkshire Sculpture Park), exhibition in November. The funds raised go into helping run YSP, as it's a charity - and throwing this many on the potter's wheel really tested my repetition making ability.

Mine loves trimming in particular--she'll put her snout right on the spinning wheelhead!

Seems every potter has a studio pet. Love seeing them in videos. Mine is a big black cat named Merle who is still figuring out how to maneuver his girth around the equipment and pots with minimal destruction!

It's good fun! And making the same shape over and over again really gets you into the rhythm of things. Thanks for watching Alex, it really means so much!

i bought your book. discipline is something i was never taught, its almost like everyone said, without saying, that your either a genius... or worthless. and i am interested in a legitimate understanding of growth. if i am understanding the content correctly, your describing exactly that from the view point of your own life via pottery.

I dunno if it was just the editing, but it seemed like your dog knew you messed up that one pot and could sense your frustration. It looked like he was cheering you up (tail)
    what a boss

Another great video Florian. Do you have any experience removing debris from reclaim? A small amount of ~1cm plywood pieces made their way onto my slab while it was drying and I'm unsure of a way to remove them from clay, other than throwing the clay and removing them by hand as I come across them. Appreciate your work as always.

Would you compare each piece in a large batch like this to a “pattern repeat” in a larger work?

Have you considered doing throwing livestreams? I think it would be interesting to see you throw live (also, love the work, seriously look up to you :]

I've thought about it but I don't know how well I'd perform live, throwing pots, and chatting to folk. But really, it's the daunting task of setting up all the cameras, mics and so on. I don't quite know how I'd incorporate another whole social media thing into my day to day life.

Completely understandable! I can see where that would be difficult, especially with manning cameras with slip all over your hands, all that. Thank you for your reply!

      Nah, Florian.
Too many folks do that. We don't need "warm & fuzzy" or whatever people think is "added" by the idea of "in the moment."
You are a master of what you do & how you do it. Your approach is elegant, efficient and exceedingly helpful to us all. Many of your followers would i am sure say the same thing.
      Thanks ever so.

@@floriangadsby dont chat while throwing 🤷, if its a problem, but rather in between. also, you dont need a new social media, just randomly incorporate it into your channel as is. the mic's and stuff idk... so, there you have it. but i have no complaints about your youtube, and im not certain it will add objective (observable) value to you, or your life.
