When the Apostle Paul wanted to give us an example of salvation through Faith alone he went back 1700 years to the patriarch Abraham. Why? Because he wanted to predate the layers of man’s traditions and conditions we call works. “Abraham believed God and it was accounted as righteousness “.. Salvation is not for the flesh, the flesh needs physical works to feel included.
Very interestingly put. I recently heard that the Canon of Scripture was selected not because those books created Truth but rather were chosen because they reflected the Truth already experienced by the Apostles, Apostolic Fathers, Church Fathers, Saints and Martyrs. Not knowing any of those people personally in the flesh, so to speak, I can experience their Truth and the fullness of the Gospel in the Scripture and the equally authoritative and true Tradition they created and experienced and in fact lived and died for.

As soon as we begin approaching theology from a position of speculation, anything that comes forth from it is, by its very nature a manmade idol; a graven image, and therefore open to subversive attack from those who desire the destruction of the Christian Way of life. I have my struggles with my desire for knowledge, which can become related to the passion of lust, and I often have to remind myself that, if the Word is not truly in my heart and a part of my lived experience, then all the knowledge in the universe cannot save me. On the other side of this, no one can shake my belief, nor my faithfulness, as long as I am abiding in the life and love of the Living Christ, because He is abiding in and through every aspect of my lived experience. No attack from the devil; neither physical torment, spiritual war, nor argument from those who are dead in their sins can prevail against the lived experience of the Living God. May God bless us all unto the ages of ages. May He descend into the Hades of our hearts and banish all darkness that has made its home therein. Amen.
I’ve decided I want to convert to Orthodoxy from Roman Catholicism. I found a Serbian perish close to me that I have visited once for liturgy. I really like the church itself, and I enjoyed the service as well. Only thing I’m unsure of is that it’s in half Serbian and half English so it’s a bit difficult to follow along. Therefore, I haven’t reached out to the priest to become a catechumen. Is it unwise to attend as an only-English speaking person since it’s half Serbian? Has anyone else had this question before becoming orthodox that can give me their opinion or if they’ve learned what the Serbian/Greek/Slavic means over time? Thanks
You’ll learn over time, especially if you study books on the Divine Liturgy, Vespers, Martins, the Hours, etc. You can also find sources for services of the Church calendar for download in English. That said, it’s important, and beneficial to your soul, to attend even if you understand little to nothing at first. Just being in Church with Christ is good beyond all comprehension.
I attend Slavonic Services regularly. I also have to remember that 90% of the Russian Speakers may not understand, but they know, what is being said. Go where you will receive the most Spiritual Guidance. If it is at the Serbian Parish, stay there.
I attend a Russian Orthodox Church as an English-only speaker. I go because Christ is there. Always remember what the scriptures say: the Holy Spirit will lead you into all truth. Seek Him and allow Him to guide you.
I know! Pick me! Because they are Saints and have demonstrated a special relationship with the Holy Spirit recognized by the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church. Am I right? Seriously, Protestantism requires the belief that Luther, Calvin, Zwingli………… had special capacity to identify Truth from Heresy. American Evangelicalism believes that an individual reading Scripture alone at their kitchen tables are individually guided by the Holy Spirit. Both circumstances are possible because well, the Saints were inspired. But the real question is how will you know if Luther or Calvin or any individual Pope or person is equal to the Saints acknowledged by the Body of Christ? Or maybe more importantly when will, you know?
