I was born with a congenital spinal narrowing and as a result I developed spinal stenosis with myelopathy in my C4, C5 and C6. After years it finally got so bad that they had to fuse my C4, replace my entire C5 with cadaver parts and fuse my C5 and C6. Prior to my surgery and for about a year afterward I had trouble walking straight and maintaining my balance and I could not lift my arms above my shoulders. I couldn't do my hair by myself and I was constantly dropping things and sometimes I couldn't even use a pen to write my name. I am left-handed and it was worse in my left hand so I actually became ambidextrous so that I could use my right hand. A year after my surgery it's better but still not like it used to be when I was a child, a teenager and a young adult. Eventually they said I will be in a wheelchair as there is no cure. But if I wouldn't have gotten the surgery I would be in a wheelchair right now and I would not be able to control my bladder or bowels. Nor would I have the use of my hands or arms. Sometimes I have to use a cane or Walker but most times I am able to walk albeit slowly. Now I'm starting to have issues in my thoracic and lumbar region especially my sciatic nerve. My spinal column is collapsing onto my spinal cord and causing damage up and down my entire back. I'm just so grateful that like Cole has Charisma, I have my husband Christopher and he loves me unconditionally. Shouldn't matter but my husband is 9 years older than I am and he is Caucasian and I am African american, Caucasian and Native American. I am 45 and he is 54. But we both really feel a connection with Cole and charisma in that we have overcome adversities with health struggles and being an older mixed race couple with cultural adversities as well from back when couples like us weren't readily accepted. We love you Cole and Charisma! You both are an inspiration! 🥰👍🏽👍🏻💚💙💜

So being considered a quad basically has to do with the “location” of the injury to the spine?? Cervical will entail being considered a quad??!

I have incomplete spinal cord damage at the C4-5 which affected my right hemisphere from shoulder to foot. Happened 14 years ago. Then recently Spinal Stenosis at C2-3. Lost sensation from my nose to my foot-left hemisphere. I’m 80% functional and fought really hard for it.
Depending what Cervical level and/or how severe the cord was damaged will determine what you’ll have use of.
The same applies to the Thoracic and the Lumbar portions of the vertebrae.
Cole is correct. He is a quadriplegic.
Cole keep rolling and sharing. You’re an inspiration to us that have Cervical spinal cord injuries.

My sister broke C5 & C6 when she was 12, however,it’s only but the grace of God & rescue 9-1-1 that she had didn’t damage her spinal cord. I was only 11 that summer when she dove into the pool. When came straight up she was so calm, she said “Sis, I broke my neck, help me to the side.” I remained calm and did as she asked, she then instructed me to “get mom and call 9-1-1” I told her I loved her and then RAN to tell mom, oddly remaining calm as well. My sister knew exactly how our momma would react so after I told her she immediately when outside (and tried to get her out of the pool) so I immediately called 9-1-1 (my first ever call).
My sister was in the hospital for over a month, they had to fly a halo brace in (4 screws to the skull) that day my body has was trained to remain calm during emergencies. The trauma Drs said had she gotten out she would’ve been either been a quadriplegic (like our grandpa due to a car accident) or worse. It took a long time for her to recover but she owes her life God & to rescue 9-1-1. For Trick or Treat she let me dress her up as Frankensteins Monster, my grandpa never was mad or upset over his accident and was the funniest man! I’m so proud of her for taking the same path. She still bears the scars on the front but otherwise she is doing okay. Prays and thanks for sharing your story. ❤
