I think it is probably fair to say that both side saw the reaction of A&M fans/donors and there was some ill feeling about how it would play out. Both probably at that time decided it best to back away.

Easy. Stoops is a known quantity, with 0 ties to A&M, active players, or recruiting base. Elko is an up and coming coach (maybe he'll be the next Smart, maybe he'll be the next Pruitt - only time will tell - but the unknown potential is certainly there), with incredible ties to A&M (one would argue that Jimbo's success largely fell on Elko's shoulders), connection to a big chunk of that locker room, and 4 years of recruiting experience in the area.
    That's why, for A&M: Elko > Stoops
That's not to say Stoops isn't good, as Aggie, I like the idea of Stoops coaching our team - but I like the idea of Elko coaching us better.

He was also involved with recruiting many of them, so a lot of the players already know him and like him. With him in the HC spot, players that might have been thinking of hitting portal might decide to stay.
There will be transfers, just maybe not the mass exodus A&M was fearing.

I don’t believe Stoops only listened to it. I believe he said yes, but when the fans pushed back on it, both parties agreed it was better to move on from it. A&M is not going to say he’s going to be the coach unless he says yes. Believe what you want, but that’s the most likely thing to happen. Not Stoops turning them down.

Everything Matt Jones says is bullshit. No facts involved, he says it from the beginning. He's basically just making up a narrative that helps his buddy Stoops save face. Everyone knows how it went down. The funny thing is, if it were Cal that everyone was talking about, Matt "Dookie" Jones would be arguing for the negative view. I know the fan base is torn on Cal, but he's actually had some success at UK. Stoops on the other hand, doesn't even have a winning conference record.

A&M huge fan base reacted, I was one one of them. We felt that we were getting another Fisher with less of a mouth at about the same money. Kentucky is welcome to keep him and continue too win at a higher level than they would with most other coaches. while UK has some good assitants its not like Stoops could have replaced them in kind or better with the draw to A&M. Elko showed more at Duke witth far less than Stoops did at Kentucky and Elko already knew of the twisted culture at A&M and how to fix it. Stoops has already reached his ceiling at UK with his speach on getting NIL players to be able to effectively to compete in the SEC expansion and division drop which will be a challenge to Eastern division (former) teams on the lower half. If KSR wants a softer take to keep the heat off Mark theen go for it.

A&M is essentially UK in the West, except with more talent. I’m happy for A&M, but definitely do not see any kind of improvement with their hire. If they’re hiring a 7-5 coach from Duke in a soft conference, they had to be told no by quite a few people.

    They could have kept players.
In Texas Stoops would have been under tremendous more pressure for the same pay and starting with reportedly 80% negativity among fans and players. That would be a steep hole to start out of. And 3-4 years from now? It would all be over.

Some Cat fans need a reality check. The fact is Stoops has the 9th longest active bowl streak, which means only Kentucky and 8 other schools have had winning (or at least non-losing) records for each of the past eight seasons, and the other 121 FBS schools have tried and failed to do the same. And of the 8 schools with longer streaks, most of them have similar ho-hum seasons during their streaks. It's not always sexy, granted, but it keeps the program moving forward

He’s has been a decent fit for KY, but not going to take us, or anyone else to an SEC or national title. With the buyout money we would have, we might have gotten a young creative coaching mind to possible take us to the next level as Stoops replacement. Think of a guy like Drinkwitz at Missouri, who clearly know how to motivate and get the absolute most from his players. He punches well above his weight class and will continue to improve their program. Those guys are still out there. @@chrismurphy4021 It’s not that I think that it’s the coaches. With the transfer portal players can leave when a coach is fired. Also, UK under Stoops has been bringing in top 25 recruiting classes. Even brought in a 14th ranked recruiting class in 2022. The talent gap is not nearly the same as it used to be. Especially with players coming from the transfer portal. Yes, they can take advantage of some coaching chaos. Those teams will lose some talent and UK can load up on some transfers to make up the gaps. What you said was true pre-Stoops, but not now. The differences in talent are seen with UGA and Bama, but that’s most teams. We’d have to pull in some top 10 classes to make up those gaps, but in the right year; some coaching shakeups, underwhelming QB performance from UGA and Bama, and the right QB for UK it’s possible. Having continuity with coaches can potentially provide that opportunity

I am so glad to hear the A&M fans and players were in a complete revolt over the pending hiring of Mark Stoops. After all, a program with 3 national championships (1919, 1927, and 1939) deserves a true home run hire. I'm sure if you look, you can find someone still alive who seen at least one of those championship teams play. If you're real lucky, you may even find one of those folks who actually remember it.
Let's look at a little more recent history. Mark Stoops inherited a real shit show when he took over. 2-10, 5-7, and 5-7 the first 3 years. Since 2016, he is 21 games over 500, and A&M is what, 22 games above 500 with multiple top 5 recruiting classes, and now the richest NIL deal in college football. I for one realize and appreciate the fact that the Kentucky fan base is bitching and moaning because of only 7 wins.
As for the players for A&M, I'm really proud of them for standing their ground and demanding that the A&M administration hire a different coach. After all, a team that has that much talent and money who has accomplished so little should be able to hold the administration over a barrel. That bowl game they played last season was an instant classic. Oh, that's right, they didn't make a bowl game last year.
Glad to see Elko getting his chance in College Station. After all, he is the reigning ACC coach of the year (a lesser conference). I believe Stoops has a 2018 SEC coach of the year year award.
As we know, both coaches went 7-5 this season. I just hope these two teams get to play each other soon.

Here’s the bottom line. Mark stoops wanted to go to Texas AM once he was denied by the boosters and fans he basically tucked his tail and came back to us. You can talk about the reasons NIL money ok cool whatever.
But still yet he wanted to leave Ky for Texas am and it looked really bad on him to not choose Ky first but instead he ended up keeping his job becauee the one promised to him said he couldn’t come.!
That was a complete media circus and it was drama that no Ky fan needed to deal with.
No one wants to believe that the beloved coach that we all came to love didn’t want us ! And didn’t want to stay here.
I mean at least at the bare minimum, Texas AM shouldn’t have said ANYTHING I mean at least hide it from all of us fans so it doesn’t put a bad taste In our mouth.
Yeah we can all be happy he stayed but it’s like have a girlfriend that stays with u because the other guy ended up staying with the guy she was with.
No one wants to be 2nd place with the coach

Your comparison is personal. Collegiate football is business that is filthier than the NFL. A & M spends more money than Kentucky on football, but if you look at results, Kentucky is on par with A & M. Tennessee has not been elite for 20 years, but you can see a little bit why they think they are top tier even though they're not. Just hilarious how A & M believes it's elite, no evidence to back that up.

I’m sure you are being fed the narrative Stoops wants you to think, but he doesn’t turn down the A&M job IF being in a much more competitive situation is important to him - it may not be, he’s been comfortable with a losing record in SEC play in the easier division for over a decade. He may not have wanted to go realizing the A&M fan base was in full revolt over Bjork trying to brink in a 35-55 coach? Elko can hit the job running, has much higher upside and know A&M!

Im definitely a stoops supporter im glad he stayed because had he left im not sure who they could have hired to keep all this young talent. I really wish they could cap the Nil its ridiculous they cant A&M should be a powerhouse every season with no salary cap in BB it matters but nowhere near to the same degree when u compare 13 SS to 85... Its making it so hard to aquire depth. This team has some legit star power but people expecting 10 win seasons just arent being honest with themselves reason being with all the stars we lack so much depth at some of the most important positions then as soon as a guy is developed and blows up by his Soph year all the players come calling ie Auburn although Hayes has played awesome at NG after Rogers left.
I just wish some of these Millionaires and Billionaires would devise a plan for some type of IMG academy to help the state go from producing 15-25 D1 players (3-6 sec caliber) on average to 40-50. It would benefit all the in state programs.
Until the NCAA figures this out its gonna be tough to aquire any depth again as good as our team is we have huge holes on the O line-Secondary and even LB. 3-5 years ago those teams didnt have all the star power but we had legit depth at every position minus Qb and with better qb play we would have definitely fielded a better group of pass catchers.
If he does leave i just hope they truly swing for the fence and just dont settle a guy one state away. Hes perfect in that conference but to win in the SEC you gotta have 6-8 solid O lineman and 6_8 guys that are 275-330# in the midde of your defense. Last thing weve proven a elite HS talent RB can thrive here why cant we land at least 1 top 20 R-back in each cycle? Rant over great video fellas. Messaging from eastern KY. We are the v

Mike Elko has a history with A&M. Elko was an incredible defensive coordinator during Jimbo’s reign of terror (the terror belonged to the fan base, not our opponents). So with that history, Mike Elko is already adjusted to A&M culture and already enjoys a certain amount of popularity . That is the only reason Aggie fans are somewhat more comfortable with Elko over Stoops.
However, I agree that Mike Elko isn’t much of a step up from Stoops.
A&M Boffed the heck out of their coaching search and produced lemons. The AD at A&M should be fired for how poorly he handled the entire situation.
Out of all the choices the Aggies could have made coaching selections from, Stoops and Elko should have been top 10… but certainly not in top 3.

I don't fault your take, but as someone who has been following Aggies football closely since the Southwest Conference days, let me fill in the blanks. We have a chip on our shoulder. We didn't start a winning tradition until the 70's, and we admittedly did poorly in the Big 12 (one conference title). Once Texas tried to flex and keep the lions share of the Big 12 money and have its own network, we left. When we left we made a commitment to start winning, and big. So far it hasn't paid off, besides an 11-2 year with Manziel and 9-1 under Fisher. Fisher proved that when Elko left, so did the discipline. While we wanted a homerun hire, eventually I think we made the right choice by bringing back the man who made 9-1 possible.
