We absolutely loved this ride. It was an amazing adventure. We used the paper maps and also the GPX downloads of the route that are available on line with Adventure Cycling. The GPX which we followed with our Garmin GPS handhelds(mounted on the bikes) was very valuable. We would have lost our way several times because the route is not marked. Go do it. It’s fantastic. If you can’t find the information just get back in touch and I’ll post some links.
Said from the bearded lady at the carnival, intriguing. From the open door of a panel van, alarming. From cyclists on the back roads of Idaho... I'll hope for "mirththy". :)
We ride on Schwalbe Marathon Mondial 47-622 (28 x 1.75). The tires are great but we had issues when the going got sandy and the traffic forced us out of the main and onto the sides of the road. Particularly between Placerville and Idaho City where the holiday traffic was terrible.
That ride was a life changer and one we will always remember. You should definitely go. You can find the maps and GPX coordinates at www.adventurecycling.org
@@martymetcalf thanks! I've done long solo races. Tour divide and colorado trail race. Planning on taking wife and kids this time. 12boy 15 yr old girl. So much slower and more planning to get done dialed. And this is a loop so even better that the great divide or other routes.
@@jarralryter That is so cool. There are towns along the way to get provisions. There is a LOT of climbing and Hike a Bike sections though. We are going to try and do the Divide in 2020. With all of your experience racing, the hardest part will just be slowing down and having fun with the kids. I'm sure you are up to the journey. You are good Daddio!
@@martymetcalf slowing down means me carrying a lot of the gear! The boy had boundless energy. We live at 8000ft by crested butte CO and ride a lot. So... But will probably have to avoid single track if i take a bob trailer. And keep mileage a lot less than i would do! We have done several 2 to 5 day rides. First one longer.
@@jarralryter Everything we did was on double track jeep roads, dirt double lane roads and pavement (due to re routing because of the flooding river). The worst part was near Idaho city because of all the campers and the dusty washboard roads that got hairy so be carful with the kids there (Take bandana for a face mask here!). It sounds like the Boys will eat it up. If they can carry their own sleeping bags, air pad and clothes, and maybe some dehydrated food you could manage your kit the tent and the cooking stuff. You can camp just about anywhere along the route easily because it is all on National Forest land basically. (I know you will figure it out) It will be quite the challenge I'm sure. But just think of the legacy you are leaving those kids. Man, they will grow up to meet ANY challenge, just like their dad. Have fun and enjoy.
I love this. What an awesome trip
Glad you enjoyed it! I highly recommend this route.
I’m thinking of doing a solo ride. How was the route finding?
Thanks for the great video. It’s awesome to be able to do that with your brother.

Kodak moment! Great soundtrack too!
That was inspiring -thanks for sharing. Fear the beard.
