I think if it was me, I would either spray or paint some of that wood lacquer under there, so that nothing can rot those beams that have some protection for at least a few years. If they if those beams are rotted, the other ones are gonna rot too. Good job fixing it!!!
the other ones I'm pretty sure got eaten by termites
Looks like you were both raised up to know how to work. Glad you’re showing your kids to work and not be lazy. Keep up the good work. Enjoy watching y’all.
Why not use a piece of PVC to run the wire through. That way when it shorts you can pull a fresh piece through
thats a good idea
Sounds like a cotton wood tree
That's a Magnolia tree. Love watching
Man you’ve gotta fix that crook in that bed lol that would drive me crazy seeing that lol
oh i am!
I remember paying 39.00 for basement jacks. I guess Bidenomics has touched everything
It'd be a few extra bucks, but bury some plastic conduit the next time you have to dig in wire across a gate. It'll help keep the wire from shorting out, and if it does go bad you can just pull your new wire through.
Andy the curve in the bed gives your garden character. So nice to see a family working together. Best wishes, Deb
Keep that yarrow!! It is used to stop bleeding! We have used it many times when my husband had a bad saw cut, when our kids got a bad wood splitter accident and when one our sons had a nose bleed. During the war soldiers used it for gun wounds😊.. I dry it and powder it. Use that on wounds and tea (research its benefits!) Like smallpox!
I have some growing in other places just should’ve never planted it in my flower bed 😅
My grandfather helped me to run power to the trailer I had bought and set up, it lasted about 7 months and shorted out, so he came out and we ran new wire though pvc, fixed it up to where no water could possibly get in. Bless his heart. I live in his house now, and will almost be grateful for everything he always helped me with, now when we do things here, I want to do things that he would appreciate. And I tell my grandchildren about how he did and try to keep his ways instilled in them.really enjoyed the video guys ❤️
them calves standing there looking all guilty... 😬
I just love watching you all with your babies “working” right along side of you. Especially your sweet little girl in her muck boots and her little hoe, and her brother with that drill helping daddy! These videos will be so treasured as they grow older with children of their own. Great memories of the beautiful life you both have made for them. ❤
Love it that you included the kids in doing the projects it helps them learn.❤❤❤❤
Well done my friends
Great parents they are with you safe and loved 😅
Be safe I hate things torn up it gets back to order lovely family and all is loved
Back In the 70's I purchased 5 of those steel basement poles for around 52.00 each , yes you are correct things have gone sky in price , stay safe , enjoy .
Well..must be the day for it.. my baby chickens, few months old now.. escaped.. think a puppy helped the escape route under the door..
One got injured..but puppies stayed on watch and they are back in and holes are filled in...
Floor looks fantastic..
You certainly have been busy.
Much love and appreciation from Australia God bless you all
Congratulations on the hard work in much better support beams in the basement area , stay safe , enjoy .
Yarrow is medicinal, antibiotic. Great in salves, along with bee balm, calendula.
Yes that’s why I planted it but should’ve never put it in the flower bed for sure!
I can't remember the name of those trees, but the wood is used in religion in Japan and the wood is worth about $800 a sq ft.
Wow!!
Electrical conduit
Wonder why you don’t put your wire in an old broken hose to help it from not getting broken?
because I didnt think about it, never have
Mimosa tree
You always need to put that wire in pvc so you can change it if you need to and it won't short out
thats a good idea
Wow, what a transformation on the pack house floor.
Great job on the packhouse floor Andy. One things for sure. There ain't much ground in Stokes County that ain't rocky or level. I like those raised beds around the edge of your garden. By the way, when are you going to bed your sweet potatoes?
Im not sure i usually dont till it starts warming up
@@TrueGritAppalachianWays Thank you sir!
We are in the Missouri ozarks and have a crazy amount of rock in the ground at our place. Rocks are our #1 crop. 😂Luckily that gives us great tasting well water. All of that rock creates an artesian water well.
You all work so hard. Motivated me to fix the fence in one of my pig areas that I haven't used in 6 months because I kept putting it off! Great job on the floor too! I know it feels so much better! Maggie is adorable!
Could you run that wire through a pvc pipe to protect it.
It might be a princess tree. I have one. Its invasive, grows about 30 ft and has beautiful purple flowers.
Great job on replacing the flooring. Found your videos last night, the wife and I watched three in a row enjoying all of them
Thank you so much!
Love you videos and lifestyle,
Great kiddo s as well,
I'ma goin to try your method of making jam I have blueberry running out the yeng yang every June and I'm going to need my freezer space for sweet corn this year.
Since groceries prices are what they are now I'm planting a bigger garden than normal and plan to preserve all I can I'll still share with neighbors and family but I gotta cut down this grocery bill it's plum crazy..
Breaking ground on a second smaller garden closer to the house for maters, okre, peppers, and squash, the big garden will be for taters corn and pole beans. Already have the Onion taters and cabbage in there,
Thanks for the vids and info,
I enjoy all your videos and watching you let the kids help out when you can. Good for ya'll!
Fairly new to your channel. Great couple , great family life. Enjoy all your video's. And have learned a few thing's i never knew. Thanks
The reason your underground electric wire breaks is the rocks rub against it when the cows step on it (as I'm sure you already know). You could get a $1 pool noodle from dollar general and surround that wire before you bury it to protect it. Just a thought. I really enjoy your channel, from the cooking to the homestead work. God bless you.
Put it in 1/2" PVC conduit. That is what I have on all my fences, and it has worked for years. If I have to run a new new it is easy.
You should run the wire you put under ground through a long, hard, plastic tube, and maybe that would protect it from shorting out.
Glad to see you accomplished that big job! We have that to do on one of our buildings....Ours is much closer to the ground and very scary, so we keep putting it off. lol
It sounds like that tree is a Royal Empress Tree which is highly invasive and is destroying native ecosystems the wood is also brittle and susceptible to wind damage. You made the right decision to cut it down
Another great video. You guys are the working people to make your farm look so beautiful and have all that tasty tasty food all year long.❤
Man plans, God laughs! 😉No matter, you still accomplished a lot. 🥰
great video and yes that raised bed would drive me nuts too
going to try to fix it before we plant this spring
i think i would of run the under ground section of wire through some poly pipe . double the insulation and easy to pull out and replace if needed .
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
You two are great folks look how like mind folks and future freinds follow you two along there a hole gaggle of people or preppers or just down hearted people with the same values as you and Andy have love you guys steve from oregon
That was a paulownia tree , it’s a hard wood , I planted 500 years ago.
Andy and Megan, you are wonderful parents for encouraging your kids to help build the fence wire and garden boards. They are making memories they won't forget. Blessings to you all.
Awesome job on the flooring glad to see you did it right. The tree is very invasive, I had one that I cut down and put some Round up on the stump and it came back after about 3-4 years.
You could try putting the wire in a pipe or PVC and then bury that in the ground.
I live in Eastern KY and I swear I believe rocks grow.lol
It was a polawanna tree(may not spelled it right lol) but had one in my yard years ago and had a guy stop and bought it for 100 dollars said that it was used to make high heel shoes because its so lightI one of the fastest growing trees
You are right. I know it as an Empress tree. Paulownia tomentosa and they have lavender blooms.
Andy talked to my step mother at Y&W yesterday and talk to you at your truck I think she said.
Your home is built on the Solid Rock. 😊
Huge area for planting vegetables.
That is some beautiful compost
I enjoy your videosyou guys are hard workers and training your children. Well, but you should put a door on that basement. So something don't fall in thereI enjoy your videosyou guys are hard workers and training your children. Well, but you should put a door on that basement. So something don't fall in there.
Yes it has a door, it just needs some TLC and we’ve got it pinned on the inside to keep it out of the way for now, but definitely plan on working on it and getting it back up, thanks for watching!
I’ll bet he used that old knife to scrape them hogs, but that’s a good sticker, the way it’s ground down.I’m not gonna get too graphic but you know what I mean by that, because you were raised on farm. Love your videos,I’m new but I’m trying to catch up.And I think that little thing with the little wheel is an instrument that was used to rough the surface of a inner tube before you applied a patch.
Thanks!
Just a suggestion from one who is there right now, dig up the yarrow now!!! It will take over your entire yard 😢. Just started watching your channel and I'm very impressed with the hard work you have done and are doing!!
haha we plan on it!
Have you thought about maybe letting your kids do a farm tour for a small fee so new homesteaders can draw some inspiration on how to animal and land manage? I would’ve loved to get some idea’s before I started my journey on how to be a good steward. Just an idea.
I wish we could! I’d love to do something like that!
Do you all have a root cellar?
Y’all are my favorite family homestead channel! ❤
thank you!
I think that was an Empress tree.
Just found your channel this past weekend. I’m loving your videos! ❤
Thank you so much!
🪨
If you didn't hit a rock digging out for the wire I would have questioned whether you were in stokes county I live off duggins rd I find new rocks with each shower of rain
hahaha! you got that right
I would think you would plant your herb beds right right near the kitchen so you can run out and get it as you need it just saying
its not far from the kitchen at all
Gosh, how many vehicles to you guys have....LOL
too many! lol
😊
Could you put the wire in a piece of pvc pipe to keep it from breaking down and shorting out?
Lots of people have suggested that, i had never thought of it but it would work
Hey Megan, you help Andy outside, does he help you cook?
we help each other all the time
Are those the beams you milled from a previous video?
no I had to buy that lumber, i was out of 2x8s when I made those, however the floor joist I milled last year
Canada calling stop it cold you have leaves on the trees there
🤣🤣
Hi
I fainted when you said "throw yarrow down the hill"!!! I want some!! Let me know when you plan to dig it up...I'll take it lol
we'll definitely give you all you want!
@TrueGritAppalachianWays just let me know...I will speed on up...love me some yarrow
Um, couldn't u use conduit pipe to protect the wire?
yes I could've but heck I done good to get the thing buried, putting it in some conduit would be pushing it overboard hahahaha
Great video! Have you ever had Paw Paw fruit? I'm hoping to get a couple of trees this year to plant
I’ve personally never eaten one, but we’ve recently found some paw paws in the woods at our lane up the road! I’d love to try some if they produce!
@TrueGritAppalachianWays when you get a ripe one it's like eating the sweetest custard.
What keeps the soil in, on the fence side? Is there a slope?
yes theres a slight drop off there, its not really noticeable in the video
Looks awesome
Btw, I grow along my fence lines in raised beds all the time and it works great. You’ll have the same, especially on that side with your wind break of trees. I have less problems with freezing and wind damage, and the narrow beds make weeding and tending easy for an old lady like myself. Plus it looks nice having those growing things along the fence.
Awesome Family life. Have a great day
Thank you! You too!
just want to say I love you guys.. love watching you.. and it's cute when the kids are involved as well. keep it up..
Your such good people. Thank you for your video's. They all make me chuckle.
A farmer suffers loses but also is rewarded with increases. The farmer has the way of life as says the Good book. When loss and increase becomes a way of life you won't be hurt by much.
The beds look great, and you have such good helpers too. Enjoyed the video.
Enjoyed watching your video this morning!
What kind of cabbage do yall plant?
I dont remember what variety it is right off the top of my head
@TrueGritAppalachianWays 10 4 I normal plant early something but only seem to have luck every other year I blame it on my soil but i don't know just my excuse I believe I seen yall say mountain pride was one of yalls tomatoes yall plant I generally go with German Johnson and brandywine red mostly cause that is the seed I have to start might see if y&w has the plants already started for the mountain pride if that was one of yalls you plant my memory not as good as use to be so let me know if im wrong with the variety stink bugs and splitting is my headache with tomatoes but none taste better than the ones from your Owen garden my corn was a complete fail this year deer coons and crows were my enemy for that gonna put up electric fence this year hope to detour deer but can't think of what to do about coons and crow
yep mountain pride is one of our favorite tomatoes, we've used the electric netting for coons but got to keep good power on it and its pretty expensive
Maggie digging with her daddy might be the cutest thing I've ever seen.
It's surprising what all you can accomplish when you have to fix something right and get side tracked from what you wanted to do to what you actually needed to do. Everyone did a bang up job today and worked together and created more garden space. Those rocks inside the raised beds to block the open spaced is the way to go. Stay safe and keep up the good work and videos around there. Fred.
Thank you!
I think I'm as excited as you are about that herb garden!
Yes! I can’t wait to see stuff growing in it!
You mean to tell me you can't find a pipe to run that wire through and bury it???
Them must be the cheapest of the cheap, as far as insulators go, cause I ain't never seen none that looked that cheap.
Get some ceramic ones.
No worries, my friend.
I won't be taking no fence constructing tips from you.
Have to ask, did y'all throw away the floor jacks y'all got years ago???
If so, sorry, but that was a bonehead move.
Of course the termites is gone, there ain't nothing left for em to eat.
You're lucky y'all didn't end up burried in that shed.
But, for future reference:
When I was a youngun, we discovered some termites at the house, not nothing like what you had though, ours had just showed up.
We shocked them out.
Not saying it ain't dangerous ifn you don't know what you're doing, but it sure is effective and a big money saver.
You might have some scars on the wood, but you can take some sandpaper to it and cure that.
Are you not running a board along the backside of your raised bed???
You ought to with it being up against the fence like that.
When I was a youngun, if I picked up a rock or log and there was insects underneath, I'd scramble like crazy to get em to the chickens.
The little girl might like worms, but can she bait a hook?
Sure would like to go fishing, but we've got a storm coming.
You sound so offended by this video 🤣🤣 have a great day
@@TrueGritAppalachianWays
Absolutely not!!!
I was laughing the whole time!!!!!
@@TrueGritAppalachianWays
I just read over what I wrote.
It reads a little different, but I thought it was funny.
Man talking about getting nit picky over a video lol… that was in the basement where the old jacks were and no there’s no board on the backside because the ground is higher back there than in front. And every dang insulator we get ahold of is cheap anymore lol
@@lawsonlawnandfarm8073
I wasn't nit picking.
I was making conversation.
Folks are sensitive anymore.
You just can't say nothing in fun or not.
The husband was kinda laughing at the fence on his own, and I just took a jab in funning, there was no ill intentions.
And it was funny y'all talking about the fence being tore down and having the culprits right there, they even looked guilty.
The basement???
Is the rest of your house eat up like that???
My grandparents sold their house and bought another house to live out the rest of their days in out deeper in the country than they was to begin with, and that house was eat up, probably near as bad, if not worse in places.
It's a serious fire hazard, and that old potbelly stove made me nervous.
Even with the fence being on somewhat higher ground, from how it looked in the video, y'all might need a board or two to run down it to keep the soil in anyways.
Yeah, everything is junk nowadays, and I'm about sick of it, and it ain't cheap junk, just junk.
If you want good quality anything, you've gotta spend a fortune, make it yourself, or find somebody that can do it for you and still have enough left over to feed yourself or your younguns.
Everything's crazy around here.
Having trouble getting food.
No frills at all, like paper towels or aluminum foil.
I've eat rice through most of the winter just to have something warm on my belly, cause I ain't got the makings for no soup or anything else.
Folks out getting their own meat from the woods is lucky.
Sure would love to have me some deer meat on a biscuit.
The ones growing their own fruits and vegetables is lucky too.
Do y'all have fruit trees and bushes?
If you do, you're saving a bundle right there.
$7.49 for an itty bitty pineapple is terrible, not saying you can grow pineapple where y'all are, just saying.
But I didn't give that much for that pineapple, couldn't get nothing but a few bananas.
Didn't get a chance to tell you on another one of your videos, but I'm glad you said something about folks petting bottle fed calves on the head.
One come running at my grandmother for a bottle, even though she was already grown, knocked her down and broke a hip, nearly crushed her chest from just rubbing up against her whilst she was on the ground, not like a bull fighting mad and putting the horns in or something, but in play according to their mentality, like it was trying to get her up really, cause she's rub that head in her chest, then get in her face like it was saying, "come on already and get me a treat."
And they'll be on you like a duck on a June bug before you know it, and they can break younger bones if they knock you down just right, you ain't gotta be old.
I wondered if folks give you grief about whacking em on the head with stick, I've had to do it several times to the same ones over and over, it takes a while to get the message.
But how else are you gonna protect yourself from them hefty beasts.
Yeah, I called it a beast, probably get bashed for that too.
Don't get me wrong, I'm crazy about all critters great and small, but you've gotta do what you gotta do.
