Shorty Long!! He stood 5 feet and had that big soulful voice. Sugarpie Desantos, Joe Tex, and James Brown were short statured but still had that big soulful voice. Thank you. That's Sammy Davis Jr. at the beginning of the song "Here Comes The Judge" saying the spoken line.
The song "Devil With A Blue Dress" was a song I remember seeing my relatives & neighbors Boppin at parties to. I didn't know his name cause I was a youngin' at the time, but when I heard the music you played, I immediately remembered those songs. He had some nice music. He had a great voice, but as you stated, he didn't get enough shine/recognition. What a tragic death. Thanks for doing his story.
You did a very good job with this shorty Long video !! I really enjoyed it and it was sad that we the fans didn’t get to hear more of him RIH Shorty you deserve it !!
Thank you for doing the story of Shorty Long. I think Long would have had more success, particularly with "Function at the Junction" if Motown would have put more money into the marketing. At that time the Tops, Temps, Gaye, and Supremes got the bulk of the budget for marketing. I am not knocking Motown, tough decisions had to be made, and you put money into what makes money. And those four acts were bringing in the bucks.
@@anthonytaylor7928 you don't know your music then. Listen to a Whisper song then listen to his . Like it or not They all have a mentor they respect. Maurice White was Billy Stewarts drummer and he implemented some of his timing into the development of EWF.
Relatively recently, I was delighted to be able to buy a, I think, 2 CD release of, "The Stereo Masters," by Shorty. Excellent, great sound! I also love the, `Blues ~ y,' aspects to his music! "Function At The Junction," was a big hit; sometimes, a song will not go up as high in the National, Billboard / Cash Box / Record World charts, because it's bigger in some markets, and at times, `travels slowly, across the Country,' successful, but not making as big an impact, all at once ~
Maybe, just a speculation, Motown didn’t want artist like shorty long to be successful because being to write and produce as well as perform made them too powerful. Too many Marvin Gaye’s would render the operation subservient to multi talented artist outside the inner circle of DHD and Smokey Robinson and such, or even allow them the economic freedom to branch off and create competing labels. That wengg th on certainly at labels like Atlantic and chess were performers didn’t write, writers didn’t perform, and producers didn’t do either unless they made enough money to force the issue.
I remember house partying in the basement and dancing off of Function at the Junction .👍
Absolutely! I have a beautiful CD of Shorty, such great songs, no wonder Marvin Gaye was always telling people Shorty had the talent..
Finally someone does Shorty!! Thank you brother 😊!!!

He had a great voice . First time I hear of him. What a shame because he would have been a star
You only have to listen to 'I wish you where here', to know what a quality artist he was.
