Having the right tool for the job is crucial man. Doing construction for a living taught me long ago if you need to do a job use the proper tools. Saves on time, quality, and many headaches. Awesome John keep up the good work!
Just purchased the fr-301 and holy cow!! After desoldering a few test pins I thought ... worth every penny. Now to order an N61-10 tip for the larger pins/pads.
Hakko is expensive but the FR-301 is my best purchase ever. I was struggling like hell before, especially with those 3 layer boards with huge thick ground planes that require preheating but with this thing I easily can desolder anything without damaging anything.. My old Chinese unit really has nothing on this guy. My absolute favourite tool!
I was given a Hakko 808 by a friend of mine who has taken a job in the UK. He didn't have room or a need for it so he gave it to me. I'm putting it to good use. :)
Started replacing switches on an old keyboard I'm modding. 83 switches, 4 pins per LED + 2 for the switch. Using GootWick I managed 5 swotches before ordering one of these on amazon 🤣
Many years ago I bought my Hakko 808, plenty of spare parts, maybe I bought 30 nozzles, filters, tubes, one heating element still new. I bought one FR-301 maybe 2 years ago and never use it, I love my every day 808. I fix High End audio and vintage equipment, throughole desoldering is a primary tool for me. Best Regards.
Great demo - but I really wish I could have seen the detail of the desoldering to compare it with my existing desoldering kti, but so out of focus I'm afraid.
That was a blur filter to hide the pad he lifted, lol just kidding. My china unit is still going strong but thinking about getting one of these to compare.
FR-301 is one of the best soldering tools I ever bought. Should have bought one way sooner, after years of absolute misery with spring loaded suckers, squeeze bulb suckers, and desoldering braid.
For anyone shopping eBay for these, most of the cheap listings are the Japanese 100V version shipped from Japan. Hakko explicitly makes different 100V and 120V versions, and I'm guessing that's for a reason. It also might end up not being cheaper if you get hit with import duties.
Used one of these 301s on a PS4 Slim the hdmi port support, this thing is strong enough to melt that lead free solder and suck right out the big achor pads .
I live in the UK & for the life of me, I cannot track one of these down in any shops without going online. I've tried using the copper braiding wire & a many pump pen with very little or no success & as it stands at the moment, when I think about soldering & desoldering, I dread the thought! Many hours wasted faffing about trying to get every molecule of solder off & the component is still stuck fast, but when I see one of these in action, it's like you asking me if I had the choice to pick a cheap android phone, or an actual iPhone! I hate them manual solder pump pens, they are useless!!
250$? Holy cow. I use a soldering/desoldering station (with gun) and I paid 150€ (more or less the same in dollars). But yeh, nice to see the desoldering gun on the channel again 😁
Wow I remember the Hakko 808 one of the best products made in the market. I have a Hakko FR-300 but now the Hakko FR-301 don’t really know much about the difference between the two. Both great love Hakko products
FR-301 is the direct replacement for the FR-300. It features an improved temperature recovery time for greater efficiency, as well as an added guard to reduce solder clogging. The FR-301 also uses N61 nozzles, with more than three times as many nozzle choice than the FR-300, which used the N50. (So nozzles are not compatible between the two)
LOL! The other thing didn’t fail because it didn’t work great or needed some extra converter. It failed because you got the wrong one. They make 110v and 220v versions. Just about every desoldering gun or station ever made is available in both flavors. Soldering irons too.
The only complaint I hear on these guns is the clear cylinder chambers that the soldier gets sucked into crack very easily. Other than that, they are good guns.
Amazon screwed me! I got three tips with my desolder station but I cannot use it. 3x nibs with no canals for the molten solder to be sucked through, I cannot use mine only because of they included nibs with no holes! Absolutely useless (the nibs, not the station or gun!) Just not having the correct pieces included, renders the whole thing useless! Looks like I might have to find some very thin drill bits & drill holes in them myself when the manufacturer should have done it!
John love and respect but I want to say your open cart surgery video in some of them you said u will fix them but there was not a part 2 please will u ever fix them cause the suspense is killing me
He pretty much stopped “fixing” anything a long time ago. He used to be willing to go all the way with replacement chips and everything. Not sure what happened but I gave up a long time ago.
@@emmettturner9452 If he has psoriatic arthritis it can cause incredible fatigue and pain for some people. The fatigue can be the worse part, it isn't like "I feel lazy and wanna chill on the couch" but instead "I just got a package i've been excitedly waiting for but I just feel too tired to walk to the front door" levels of fatigue. Even if you're incredibly motivated and driven towards a task you can't do it due to the level of fatigue. Hopefully that isn't the case for him, but just thought i'd share since most people don't know much about the effects of psoriatic arthritis/psoriasis.
Your new desolder looks pretty sweet im thinking of getting one now. In regards to your statement on the cheapy pump one you own i disagree with you i purchased one after seeing it on your video and can't stand it drives me nuts.
ive been looking for something like this. i have to order online anyway cause my local town doesnt have anything to desolder boards with. i literally dug around and looked
Hey I just got the desoldering tool too! I seem to have some problems with removing the seal from the tip… how long should I wait for the iron to heat up?
Hey John, awesome video man! I was wondering if you have any videos of making sega master system repros? If you do, can you point me on the right direction or link. Thanks man!
Why didn't you socket the chip? Is the case too small inside that it won't fit? As for the price? $250 seems pretty affordable if you are interested in personal satisfaction or if you are hard on yourself when things don't go your way? Spend the money to eliminate potential fails. I'm sure there are OTHER ways to fail but reducing the potential is a good investment in YOURSELF.
I would love to get in the circuit board repair what would recommend. I own a lot of Hakko products I’ve been doing tv repair for friends and family but not professional what would you recommend for a side business
Trusteft what are you talking about? He was definitely referring to that model only. Obviously all companies on earth didn’t halt production of ALL desoldering guns lol.....
Once your Hakko is out of warranty and it shits itself forget about getting a circuit diagram for it... Hakko will NOT supply it because its confidential.... Lol really Hakko, its a frigging soldering iron and not a rocket you muppets. People don't waste your money on this overpriced junk. Hakko was great in the 90's but got money hungry

Amazon supports ICE kidnapping of children... but sure, go ahead and promote Amazon...

When, after a review of something,I don't have any question to ask, this is a sign of a really complete review! Thank you very much for this!

I'm impressed by the skill you've got with those things.
I was not impressed by his performance
Ahhhh, so lucky! Makes the work so much easier, excited to see you have a replacement now!
Very nice work John. Thanks Jim for supporting the channel!
R.I.P. 808 the gun that helped make my sweet home repro
haha, yep! I'm still confident I can get it working, but this will be what to use for now.

Just got done with mine. Fixing up a DK Cocktail :)
This guy would be the coolest teacher

You can buy these on eBay from Japanese sellers for around $167 shipped. Just fyi for anyone that wants one.
I would love to see a follow up video for the Hakko. I recently bought one and would like to know which model tips I should get for it.
Great piece of equipment right here and good video. Keep it up.

good job, I received my 301 today, after watching your video, I'm ready to work :) thanks!
wish you would have centered the video in the frame & focused

I got one of those chip removers per your recommendation and use it a ton. Very useful
Thanks for sharing. I think I’m going to have to save up for one of these
Got mine today thanks to your good video I really like it thanks for your good work

Perfect video. Thanks!
genius with board level repair but less so with camera focus 😜

there is a shortage going on with this desoldering gun, i tried to order one off amazon it it got put on backorder, and i have to wait a while.
and sadly, it was a japanese version, i later ordered a american one, hasn't arrived yet, and in the process of returning the japanese one.
ive been looking for something like this. i have to order online anyway cause my local town doesnt have anything to desolder boards with. i literally dug around and looked
Only place I’ve ever seen it is Fry’s Electronics.
i'll give you 30+shipping for the 808 :P awesome video as always! cant wait to see more cart surgery videos!
Hey I just got the desoldering tool too! I seem to have some problems with removing the seal from the tip… how long should I wait for the iron to heat up?

you deserve it man!!!! 👍
Where did you get your eprom remover? I like it... want one :)
Do you know if I can replace analog jock stick on controllers with this item?
Was this the Hakko FR301-03 or 301-83??
Also, I see no link for the other tool you describe! What's the name of it?
Any word on what the differences are between those sub models?
I would love to get in the circuit board repair what would recommend. I own a lot of Hakko products I’ve been doing tv repair for friends and family but not professional what would you recommend for a side business
I thought you couldn't accept this.....
"I just got ways to make you dance" is the same thing alcohol says to you when you go out and say can't dance.
For $200 the stand is basically shameful
350 now 💀
Hey Riggs if you're ever thinking of selling your 808 let me know id be willing to purchase it off you.

No name yet?
Why the hell do people that cannot speak clearly or describe accurately do reviews?
Wiggle it just a little bit😂
👍🏾
Since when they stop making desoldering guns? A quick search online I can find thousands on sale.
Hakko stopped making the 808, that was what he was talking about.
He said That specific brand stopped making that specific model....
@oldman thanks for the clarification.
@beefcurtainz69 technically he didn't, but thanks anyway. Someone (just saying) could have taken that as all desoldering guns.
Trusteft what are you talking about? He was definitely referring to that model only. Obviously all companies on earth didn’t halt production of ALL desoldering guns lol.....
