    This was awesome! Can I ask, when you harvest these, do you remove the whole plant and start again or do you harvest the leaves and let them grow back? Also do you periodically have to clean the containers?

      One question do you not get any algae growing on your sponges? I find those sponges tend to grow algae and when you wash them you also need to use bleach as well? Your lettuce looks fantastic!! Currently I’m growing abundance of lettuce too and I find it really thrives if I cut it around the outer leaves and then I have harvests every 7-10 days and it keeps growing. How often do you add nutrient solution or do you add plain water from time to time?

    • @healinghobbies
      @healinghobbies  2 года назад

      Thank you! 😍 so far no algae issue. I think because of the cup I use. They are almost half way covered by it and not expose to sunlight. The set up is in the east of the house and get shade at noon. I guess it helps that way. No bleach even with hydroton. I only use boiling water. I have a small semi DFT system I got from amazon that uses square foam. When I put the foam to their cute tiny net cups it sit all way to the top. I fight with algae on that system a lot and to date I still do not know how to get away with it😊. I do use 90% alcohol to wipe or use them for last rinse on some of my container to disinfect. I just add few drops to the water.

    • @healinghobbies
      @healinghobbies  2 года назад +3

      Thank you for watching. Yes you can start seeds from foam media. The downside is it develop algae growth when u start exposing them to sunlight or grow light. Also, in my experience I have less success germinating seeds on foam but for some it works. With the harvest I do both, there were times I’ll cut the whole head of lettuce for a salad and at times, I just pinch a few leaves for sandwiches😊. I hope this helps.Keep Growing!💦🌱

    why and when do you transfer into a larger container? How long should you grow in a small container? What can you grown in small containers until harvest?

    • @healinghobbies
      @healinghobbies  Год назад

      After the seedlings has been hardened off for 3-4 days, you may transfer them to a growing container. Alternatively, you can directly harden the seedlings in the growing container itself. During the hardening process, keep the lettuce seedlings in partial shade. To avoid the transplanting/hardening process, direct sowing is also an option. Typically, lettuce can be harvested within 25-30 days after transplanting. There are no restrictions on the container size for growing lettuce. I've experiment growing lettuce in small multivitamin containers. However, small containers require frequent nutrient refills, especially when growing leafy greens. To avoid this, use a container with a capacity of at least one gallon. With fruiting plants, I've used at least 5 gallon buckets growing tomatoes, eggplants, cucumber, melons and peppers. I hope this helps!🌱🙂

    • @healinghobbies

      Happy to share! Yes to all🙂. Though, with this particular set up and reservoir size, it may not always be necessary to refill the nutrient solution until harvest time, particularly during the spring season. For mid summer, plants takes up a lot of nutrients and moisture . Therefore refill when necessary.🌱🙂

      @@healinghobbies I have the same LAPOND system that you have on your affiliate page with the 1.7 inch square cups. That is my only system at this time. I plan on making a few other kratky systems out of things like pickle jars, coffee canisters anything that I can use. Your video is very helpful.

    • @healinghobbies
      @healinghobbies  Год назад +1

      Thank you! I like the Lapond for a semi NFT system. The only challenge with it is the middle section do'nt get much sunlight otherwise its a good system. Are you growing greens with Kratky? You can use almost any containers available at home(recycle-milk jugs, milk cartons, juice bottles, coke etc)🙂. I would suggest though to lessen the hassle of refilling, use at least 1.8L (orange juice ) or one gallon milk jugs. Other alternative is a 40qt tote container or dish bus tubs. Those can grow at least 8-10heads of leafy greens without refill. If you are growing Kratky for fruiting plants like tomatoes, eggplants, pepper or cucumber. Go with at least 5 gallon up. 🌱🙂
