SAM or Software Automatic Mouth is a text to speech program originally released in 1982 for the Commodore 64, apple II, and Atari 8-Bit computers.

V1's voice was so iconic that they made his voice into a text to speech
It blows my mind that computers from the 80s were/are able to do this! I just have to imagine how weird the first prank phone call with a voice like this must have been haha
I enjoy your video's very much. They demonstrate somewhat advanced applications on the C64 bus very clear and short. Most other video's explaining advanced "things C64" are very long. Your video's will get more casual users into the hobby. Thanks. :)
I had this for the Atari 1200XL. SAM can also sing. Great to hear SAM’s voice again!

SAM eventually evolved into MacInTalk, and SAM is also included in Chipspeech

Good video man. I am obsessed with my The C64. Have a USB stick with thousands of demos, games and other stuff and was just thinking about text to speech for C64 and then your video hit my feed.
I have read somewhere that the digitized speech playback feature was not a designed function on the C64 but a clever use of a noise glitch.

SAM is clearly NOT written entirely Basic. It uses a basic interface to make it interactible from the basic prompt. The action takes place in assembly/machine code.

I built a a speech synthesizer back in the 80's. I need to dig it out and see if it still works. I'll try to post a pic and a bit of detail.

Sam's text to sound is pretty basic, but you can do a lot better if you use its phonetic mode.

Is there any way to use SAM in a way that allows you to talk using STT and playing it back through TTS automatically?

Some words have to be deliberately misspelled or else SAM will butcher them.
Try inputting, "He drinks douches." and see what happens.
Now input, "He drinks dooshes."
Sounds better doen't it?
Words like, "towel" and, "shower" also require misspelling.
