That’s awesome! I’ve been experimenting with vector graphics and laser cutting in my schools lab, it’s so satisfying to just design something on s screen and then be able to have it physically!
Try using powder coating tape. It's stronger, and a lot easier to cut and manipulate, so you get cleaner, straighter lines. It's also translucent, so you can see where you're laying down your tape. Some of them are also made to withstand high heat, so you can bake/cure your paint without the masking falling off.
That’s awesome! But two questions; 1) It that regular Tamiya TS paint? And 2) Won’t the paint damage the helmets outer shell long term? (Won’t it compromise safety and legality of the helmet being used).
thumbnail made me think Frank was back :( Notice Norm rubbed the mask with his fingers and Bill used his sleeve... use gloves people your sleeves will leave detergents behind and your skin oils.. makes the paint not stick. Also on a helmet NEVER PAINT OVER THE DOT STICKER! Now that they painted over it, that helmet is illegal to use on the road. If you are going to paint a helmet, mask the DOT sticker up so it doesn't get covered.
J.A.Ratt85 They don’t say why they’re painting the helmet. It could be used for cosplay or just for a decorative piece as opposed to a functional piece.
I think that it looks bloody awesome and I rarely use that word. Really cool pattern, don't know if you were going for a tread pattern or just a great design? Which ever it was it turned out great.
I've done stencils for over a decade. pro-tip: spray further away, dont stop spraying (those small squirts can be bad news), dont spray back over an area you just sprayed, do multiple light layers and let it completely dry between layers, make sure it's completely dry when you peel it off. you can even get special caps for spray paint for stenciling that spray at a slower rate. They help. typically when things bleed under a stencil they look more faint and not so well defined. are you sure it is bleed from under the masking tape or was it because the stencil was lifted off while wet and the layer had way too much paint so when you pulled the tape away it pulled paint with it and moved it to places it shouldnt have been. do multiple light layers and let them all completely dry will solve that. I like to think that there is no such as thing as "dry enough to peel off the masking tape". wait for it to completely dry.
I've been wanting to build a CO2 laser cutter for a while, but I just haven't gotten around to it yet. Writing the CNC software is the easy part for me, but building the mechanical, electrical and optical parts... that's the challenge. I am learning electronics design, but I have too many other projects on my plate so who knows how long it'd be before I get back to this.
so what are we gonna scoot over the fact ya'll just jynxed each other and nobody called it? ya'll hangingg out doing so many vids you guys became twins lol
Cool!!! But... A motorcycle helmet consists of a rigid outer shell, which should not be painted or altered in any way with the placement of adhesives, chemicals, solvents, paints or other agents not authorized by the manufacturer, as this would negatively affect the structure of the hull, weakening it, and therefore partially or totally reduce the protection offered by it.
Take a look at racing helmets worn at the top levels, you'll find nearly all of them are custom painted. You are probably fine, just do a little research to find out if the paint you used is problematic.
Please make sure not to mask over the DOT sticker (which renders it illegal to use on the road). Also do not use on a polycarbonate (plastic) helmet, as some adhesives can degrade those, and make a helmet deadly.
The only thing this $30,0000 laser did better than a $200 vinyl cutter is saved you time weeding out the hexagons. Show Norm what you can do with a cheap vinyl cutter and it might blow his mind.
Use a backer then you won't need to clean up... also dude cutting your honeycomb with a knife... big N O draw it in or use the backer. You could get an unwrapped helmut file too... and the curvature would be worked out... I use this tech all the time... you can have fun with manipulation and optical illusion. The laser mask is low tak... you can use higher tak tape on a backer
When I want to do a "special " paint job I use a similar base coat color and then make a artful choice from an auto touch up spray can rack. They have maybe a hundred different colors shades and textures. For an absolute novice it turns out great, almost professional. Auto paint is harder and has a finer sparkle than metal flake. Try it you'll like it.
Take care that the paint doesn’t affect the shell of the helmet. As a salesperson in a motorcycle shop I would not advice painting or stickering your helmet for this reason. Looks cool though!
Piet Paulusma as long as it's not a acetone based paint your fine been doing it for years . I recommend and acrylic mix from a air gun it comes out even and easy and dries smooth and resistant to scratches.
Don't know about motorcycle helmets but those are common warnings for hard hats. The paint could have solvents that weaken the plastic, and stickers are discouraged more because it can hide damage like fine cracks.
@Ronan B, decades ago I had a police team do a talk at my school, showing how such modifications can render a helmet useless as protection. They showed actual helmets, which had been in crashes, and split right open. Using ones that were perfectly fine, until somebody had applied a sticker on it, for decoration. Including some that were done in shops, which did not have personnel as well-informed as Piet Paulusma.
I enjoy watching Bill spray paint, as he does it well and correctly. 90% of the time when I see someone spray painting on RUclips, it makes my skin crawl because of how wrong it is. lol
eek. I cringed. With stenciling you want multiple lighter layers and doing those short sprays can cause inconstancies. I actually think that's the reason for the paint getting where it shouldnt have.
J Benson exactly, the paint went on too heavy. You need to put 3-4 dry coats, just dusting it on with 10 minutes between coats and then two wet coats. As a car modeller I use Tamiya spray paints a lot and it always works for me.
I think they were not going fot the perfect job but rather for a quick result. ^^ Out of curiosity, why exactly do you dust the surface first? Do you do that with any sprayed on paintjob or only in specific cases? I tried to find some proper tutorials on that topic, but no lick so far.
NochSoEinKaddiFan it's sometimes called a 'grip coat'. It prevents runs which may occur if the paint is applied to heavily, and provides subsequent coats with good adhesion
Not that I'm aware of. I was an engraver for years and was constantly on the lookout for something like that. From what I managed to find out, anything called vinyl is shorthand for polyvinyl chloride, which releases Cl2 gas when burned among other things. They do make some special films that can be used for masking (better heat dissipation for glass engraving) but that's the closest I found.
Between the crooked design, the poor application of the masking and the fact that you should never paint helmets, I have to admit I appreciate the fact that this video was posted. They can't all be winners and it's refreshing to see what amounts to a failure. Good(?) job guys.
Well the "crooked" design is clearly intentional. Hexagons are symmetrical, it would have been easier to make it straight but they went out of their way to make it angled. It gives it an irregular look that really makes it stand out.
This video really NEEDS A WARNING. See Piet Paulusma's comment below, for corroboration. Applying decorative stickers, to a helmet CAN BE FATAL! Police warn against applying ANY stickers, for that reason. I do not know if this version is safe but, even if it, is we should be told why, and there should be advice on what to avoid, to prevent degrading the helmet's protection.
I know right? Motorcycle riding would be perfectly safe but these damn kids keep putting stickers on their helmets. If only they hadn't added that small layer of vinyl, the integrity of that helmet shell and the styrofoam inside could've done their job.
@Gerald500 Educate yourself, before you mock safety advice. If something sounds counter-intuitive do a bit of research, rather than try to make some quip which could get someone killed, if they figure you know better. 30 seconds of googling got this: www.motorcyclenews.com/new-rider/2009/october/oct0209-faq-new-rider-advice-can-i-put-stickers-on-my-helmet/
Mark Pendragon I'm sure we all appreciate the concern. Go ahead and watch the video you posted and he says the problem is long term with the adhesives of stickers degrading certain plastic material helmets. Tested employed the use of temporary low adhesive tape to apply paint. Completely safe.
@Raven Ethereal Thanks for the info. I still think it is a missed opportunity to have failed to emphasise the importance of that. But am glad that Tested were not (directly) encouraging unsafe practice. Now I only need to hold my hands over my eyes, when I see Adam reaching under a spinning lathe. :-D
Ikr?! Diagonally placed orange hexagons Worst part is the missing hexagons along the sides I feel like they rushed this video and didn't spend any time at all on a design idea
How many time do I have to tell you amateurs to paint with your background colour first so the top coat doesn't leak under and bleed like that. Or the closest colour you can get, in your case a white would have worked ;-D
The tested content is becoming really boring. If you compare this to like the lightsaber casting tutorial this is really mediocre. Also the one day builds are all basically putting together kits.
that clear coat tip is so amazing! Honestly re-title the video as:
Tip to prevent paint from bleeding under masking.
Clear coat first!! Omg thank you for solving so many of my problems
problem with the bleeding is they put a thick first coat. if they had done light coats but many over time it wouldn't have turned out like that.
Ok that turned out way better than I thought!
That’s awesome! I’ve been experimenting with vector graphics and laser cutting in my schools lab, it’s so satisfying to just design something on s screen and then be able to have it physically!

I just bought my first vinyl cutter for creating paint masks and it’s changed my life!
I love how you guys actually taped down tape.
That’s awesome! But two questions; 1) It that regular Tamiya TS paint? And 2) Won’t the paint damage the helmets outer shell long term? (Won’t it compromise safety and legality of the helmet being used).
That tip at the very end made this whole video.
thumbnail made me think Frank was back :( Notice Norm rubbed the mask with his fingers and Bill used his sleeve... use gloves people your sleeves will leave detergents behind and your skin oils.. makes the paint not stick. J.A.Ratt85 They don’t say why they’re painting the helmet. It could be used for cosplay or just for a decorative piece as opposed to a functional piece.
If it's a prop helmet, the DOT sticker doesn't really serve any purpose :P
And it is not worth mentioning that 'this helmet is now illegal for road use, only use it for cosplay or as a prop'?
I Screamed FRANK IS BACK!!!
I think that it looks bloody awesome and I rarely use that word. Really cool pattern, don't know if you were going for a tread pattern or just a great design? Which ever it was it turned out great.
Another great vid guys!
Maybe on iteration 2 you could cut some relief cuts on the side. This would allow the sides to sit on the curve better.
Very cool. A friend of mine recently got a laser cutter. I’m looking forward to an opportunity to get to play with it.
Put the paint on to wet , lack of sanding and proper prep . Clear coat afterwards to seal it in. I like the laser stencil .
Excellent work dudes!
- Don't peel away from the surface
- Gotcha
** Peels at 90° at the top**
You don’t need a laser cutting for this. Something like a Silhouette cameo cutter would work.
Kouu17 kudos to that, I own a shilouette Portrait for around 100$. I made so many decals and shirts with this thing, totally worth every penny
Perfect timing, just this week my Laser engraver arrived XD
Hey Bill, your beard is on point. Stay fresh
Thank you Tested!
I've been wanting to build a CO2 laser cutter for a while, but I just haven't gotten around to it yet. Thanks for sharing /s
You're welcome.
Norm is more awkward than I am! Thanks Norm, you made me feel better!
seeing how that hex hole could have fit betting over that attachment button upsets me
What is the wide tape used called? And where can I find it? I need this ;)
More Bill. Please.
It´s better with self-adhesive vinyl film, because it is flexible and can be adjusted with a hot air gun
I always wanted a laser printer, always cool things to do.
One way to avoid the paint bleed is to just mist on the first coat then a couple of full but light coats.
I like the idea but think Frog tape would be a better choice. Transfer tape has a very weak adhesive be design and doesn’t seal well.
Even if u over lapped like 3 pices of wide green automotive masking tape that will work wonders
I kind of like the bleed, gives it sort of a grunge feel
What kind of laser do you have? I can see it's ULS, but which model/config?
should have done a two tone effect
What's the software they're using for the laser cutter?
a two color reverse would look good !
so what are we gonna scoot over the fact ya'll just jynxed each other and nobody called it? ya'll hangingg out doing so many vids you guys became twins lol
this is a really good idea - I'm a little upset I didn't think of it myself....
you can also use rubber cement as a paint mask.
It's the guy from Modern Rogue!!!!
Cool!!! But... acknowledged and bumped to the top!
Take a look at racing helmets worn at the top levels, you'll find nearly all of them are custom painted. You are probably fine, just do a little research to find out if the paint you used is problematic.
Linus Tech Tips would love this helmet.
It’s in a laser cutter but let’s just jump in there with a knife and cut it off LoL
where is a good place to get the wide tape they used?
I'm doing this as soon as college starts back up, 60 watt co2 laser
Please make sure not to mask over the DOT sticker (which renders it illegal to use on the road). Also do not use on a polycarbonate (plastic) helmet, as some adhesives can degrade those, and make a helmet deadly.

i would test the paint with the helmet existing paint first, i have experience where the two paint react with each other and it peel off
Was that tamiya model paint? I'ive used IT on my RC cars.
When I want to do a "special " paint job I use a similar base coat color and then make a artful choice from an auto touch up spray can rack. Don't know about motorcycle helmets but those are common warnings for hard hats. The paint could have solvents that weaken the plastic, and stickers are discouraged more because it can hide damage like fine cracks.
Ronan B some paints will degrade the outer layer of the helmet, which is important for its effectiveness in a crash

I'm surprised the orange paint was able to stick/cure on the finished helmet in the first place

Super cool content!!
I think it looks pretty cool that Its not completely perfect
they do make a viynl that can be used on a laser cutter that will not produce the gases that damages the glass.

Joel Ganong there is a company called Stahls that make vinyl made out of Polyurethane (PU) thats safe for laser cutters.
I would have sprayed a clear coat first just to fill the bleed area
Went slightly dyslexic reading the title. Thought it said making pasta using a laser cutter.
Was disappointed.
Please make that your next video.
Should have used frog tape, it actually works.
Did you just tape down tape? Haha
holy shit this guy has gained a lot of weight
Dude on the right looks just like the murderer from “evil genius” show on Netflix
Just use a plotter
Just get some better tape anything 3m clear coat good idea but not gonna come out as nice as u may think
Modern Rogue Bill Doran is different from Tested Bill
Really cleaver!
i thought Frank was back he kinda looks like Frank and on some parts i thought i was listening To Franks Voice
looks like you could strike a match on it
someone already must have said this
hey its Frank
Where's Adam???
Awesomeness!
If you’re both with Tested then just fucking say “I’m norm AND bill from Tested” not norm from Tested and bill from Tested it makes no fucking sense.
Wait, Bill Duran is part of Tested now?! SWEET! I hope he keeps making content on his Punished Props channel though.
Fear not, we have plenty more content coming every week on our channel! =D
What a terrific day. “Bill from tested” is just glorious
Cool stuff
Good vid
Should have clear coated like you said, but still great video. Keep up the great work guys!
my nigga bill
Well i gues ill try this
Really bad design
There are missing hexagons along the side as well
Between the crooked design, the poor application of the masking and the fact that you should never paint helmets, I have to admit I appreciate the fact that this video was posted. They can't all be winners and it's refreshing to see what amounts to a failure. Good(?) job guys.
oh boy you must be fun at parties
Well the "crooked" design is clearly intentional. Hexagons are symmetrical, it would have been easier to make it straight but they went out of their way to make it angled. It gives it an irregular look that really makes it stand out.
You definitely weren't paying attention when the pattern was actually getting cut, eh?
BrutalBa5sMixedBag I was just about to point out the exact same fact that you should never paint motorcycle helmets.
Helmets should never be painted? Who told you that? Every helmet is painted.
good afternoon twitter
Yeah give a tip for if you dont have the right tape cause everyone has a fking lazer at home or something the tape is the easiest thing to get
Hi
Frank!?1?
perfect of teevee... no real useful information, like power and speed settings, material of the "tape" basically you just wasted my time.
You apply tou much paint
This video really NEEDS A WARNING. See Piet Paulusma's comment below, for corroboration. Applying decorative stickers, to a helmet CAN BE FATAL! I'm only subscribed for Adam
Norm is so awkward on camera...
I'm not here because of you. Just be nice, man.
This channel wouldn't exist without Norm.
I was the same way but I found that "Still Untitled" is a good transition to enjoying these types of videos.
Only here cuz i miss mythbusters...

The helmet looked shit regardless of the design.
