Parrot Bebop drone review

- The Parrot Bebop is an ambitious drone with serious flaws. Constructed with an unreliable build and a weak battery life, the Bebop's biggest problem is the most basic one a drone can have: you can't control it.

I appreciate the honesty of the review. The constant disconnecting is a major issue.
@@Dougy lmao whats your problem
2:25 it's cheap at $499
thank you for reminding me how poor i am.
its $260 now lol
o really.
I have no problems controlling mine. never. and for that price what phantom are you getting? must be the battery only ;)
PHANTOM 3 STANDARD is actually at $499 and even less at Amazon, and it is thousands of years better.
dafuq you can get a P3 standard for that price which is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better
Watched the review but went ahead and got one. Glad I did no issues. So far everything has performed flawlessly. Maybe we need another review now that there have been updates. Love mine.
Yea this guy is wack
That was an amazing video! You said all the things that I was saying about my drone. Unfortunately, I watched this video after I was flying my drone and there was a motor failure while it was flying very fast and it came down still travelling really fast and crashed into the ground. One of the propellor holders snapped off and the battery came flying out of the drone almost hitting a cyclist. We took it back to Argos and without a fuss, they exchanged it for another drone.
Was it really a good idea making this review next to a body of water...?
***** its not my drone; also ensures there's fewer people to hit
scratchymaster
lol
Smart Tech lol
Yes, because it's a cheap way to add intensity and excitement. It makes you wanna watch longer to see if he'll drown the thing.
Well, losing control over a flying object is definitively a no-go! I was considering to buy that drone because it's so small. But I will not risk losing controll.
He's not using a sky controller, a phone has very limited range so of course he'll lose signal, what he fails to mention is that if signal is lost it'll hover, if this goes on it'll return to its starting point, this video is quite obviously done by someone he's not remotely tec savey
nessunday Overton yes, those features are implemented as I've read and they should work. Anyway the connection should work too. But it didn't. I would totally agree with you if the pilot was 30m away from the drone but that was not the case. The connection broke when he was just some few feet away and there were no obstacles! BTW: I was interested in the drone because of it's small size so I would have used my smartphone too.
You do have to take in environmental things as well if your near power line your signal will b jammed or by certain buildings, I've flown mine and never had an issue with it, also it's not so good without the controller, in ether care the new drones are getting smaller and smaller so which ever the case you need a good interface not a over priced phone
nessunday Overton Agreed. I have the controller. Now, I am NOT getting 1.5 miles, but in a completely open area i was able to get about 1 mile distance from the controller. After about a half mile i get HUGE FPV lag. Like a full second of latency and when your flying around building this can be BADDDD!!!! This is an OK quad. If i could do it again, i would have spent the extra change and bought a DJI PHantom 2 vision plus. Higher quality and better support.
+Elliott Pew get the Bebop 2
Even though the purge can be biased toward Apple on phone, tablet, and computer reviews, they easily make the best drone reviews!
This is my next quadrocopter/drone? Please the Verge do this!
Phantom 3
Marios5556 Yuneec Q500+ is MUCH better.
I am looking for an affordable drone. preferably below 100 $ for fun use. Although the Verge can probably make a This is my Next for every category , low budget , high budget etc.
***** Who the fuck are you? I wasn't talking to you so move along.
TheOverlord1 You posted publicly, get over it. Let's fly the P3 and Q500 out to 1.5 miles an see which is "much" better.
So you found that the drone had a mind of its own but continued to fly it near a large water source risking the drone. This is why I am subscribed to this channel.
I've been flying my Bebop for about five months now. The last three months with a Skycontroller. I guess I been very lucky, because not once have I lost connection nor control of the quad. I got the Skycontroller because it was a real pain in distance and sun light using my iPhone or iPad. I use the hood provided with my Mini iPad and it works great. The only problem I've had three weeks ago was a motor failure on startup, so I couldn't takeoff. I called Parrot and they sent out not just one motor, but four new motors at no cost. The kit arrived yesterday, so I'll be back fly soon. Hope my luck remains.
I have one of these and I've never lost connection and my quality is crystal clear I've flown it to the end of my neighborhood and back problem less
Serious and very important question. When reviewing a product like this, do they ever like...contact customer support and get a replacement before finishing the review? Seems like they got a defective unit and reviewed it the way it was anyway
Exactly! mine has been perfect.
Who is this guy? The review was amazing!! Keep it up The Verge!!
Irvel N In some shots, he used the Bebop outside with the indoor prop guards. That's shows that he doesn't know what he's doing in my opinion.
I've had this drone for 3 months now and it's the BEST money I have ever spent! It's very easy to fly! It NEVER lost connection and I never crashed it!!
This guy just must be terrible at flying this drone!
had this drone for 2 weeks using my BlackBerry dtek 60 I can get over 300 metres with it. every time I loose connection it comes right back to where it took off. using a r pro 3 app. make sure you read instructions and go through all the settings before flying, never had a crash once or lost it. the flight plan is unreal, just put in the way points with altitude and speed settings and it can fly mega far on its own using the built in gps. just make sure u loop it back close to where you started from and at a low altitude to regain control after its auto pilot flight. for £200 it's more than enough for me and no control pad just my phone. excellent drone when set up correctly.
I have been looking into building one form scratch and I can assure you that for 900 bucks you can make one which by far nicer than this one and has some of the same features (range, fpv, even a go pro w/ a gimbal). It surely lacks the ease of use that this model provides, but i guess you can get much more out of it in the long run, and its full of online resources and websites to get you started!
+1
Alberto Progida was just about to make these comments. plus flying fpv using WIFI is shitty. Wifi has to much lag. 2-3 seconds or more sometimes. Forget about proximity or acro flying . This beebop is nothing more then a camera platform. And apparently a crappy one at that. I don't think it can do 1080@60 fps.
I was thinking of buying this one, but not anymore. Thank you for this honest review.
Great Video! I have a bebop 1 and I love it
Verge, building your own is also a cheaper but more involving option. By learning what each part does and building it to specially suit your needs, it may prove to be the better option than buying an expensive one like the Parrot. For that price you could have a very stable and reliable long range fpv rig.
The Bebop is one of the best drones, i havent had anny issues with my bebop. Oh and its not a go pro 2:36 its a drone.
Loved the TV quality style of this review!
It's $499.99 Canadian now with Controller, thinking about it for when I go up north :)
Exactly. I bought mine 2 weeks ago for 499$ at bestbuy.ca and that included the skycontroller. But now it's back to 599$. It's going down in price now. I had the choice between the Phantom 3 basic for 680$CAS and this one for 499$CAD, but choose the Bebop because It's small and looks like a toy, so I can bring it to a lot of places without people panicking. with the Phantom, I would get kicked out really quick in some of the places that allow me to fly my Bebop legally, like my little local park. If you want a flying camera, get the Phantom, if you want a fun drone to fly, get the Bebop!
oasisbeyond it's $200 now here in the states, and $125 for the skycontroller.
Seems like a fun product, would love to see our place up north just for fun. Don't need a huge one.
Frankly I'm looking for some good information about the Bebop , and is nothing easy .
I bought one and am still awaiting delivery . But all I see are comments bads about it, is too complicated to understand this.
In Every other video I watched About this Drone they never had any problems with the connections or the controls. They once even did fly 1,4 Miles with the Drone without losing connection. So either you are doing something wrong, or your Drone is broken
It's like they designed this half-way and then set it out for production...
Minkailu Lamin That's what happens when someone doesn't meet their deadlines leeeeeel
Pretty much right? Can't fly, bad range, and the battery won't even snap closed haha
Glad I saw this I was just about to buy this drone
Thanks VERY much for the review. I was very inclined to buy one until I saw your review, which I think it highlighted the biggest problem for the Bebop - control reliability. I wouldn't want to spend that kind of money on something like that.
wow nice turtles, i wish i could get me some turtle eggs to make some turtle soup!
Thank you for a great honest review brilliant
I just realized that the bebop does not record audio, but when you crashed it you can hear it clearly crash like you are next to it, but you are not. :/
Why are they using the bumpers outside??
3DR Solo... Where art thou? Whence shall thou be released beyond pre-order?
I think the biggest problem with your test is simply you're just a terrible pilot. Holy mackerel I own both in fact I own three Bebop's not once have I crashed any of them and not once have I lost connection not once have I ever had any problems with either one of them Bebop 1 Bebop 2 and Bebop 2 power Edition. The solution is to just learn how to fly it.
This is the only review out there saying this kind of thing. That tells me that you have a defective drone and very little experience with product reviews. Do you honestly think a drone that costs $499 and has an extended range of 1.2 miles would actually be released with such massive problems? Parrot is a reputable company, and I trust their products, and the other 3 dozen reviews on this drone out there, before I trust your crappy intutition
Hear hear.
Informative video!
Have one, had more than 30+ flights...lost connection once...just once with the xperia tablet z (most of the time I use xperia z2 as a controller and never get disconnected and I mean NEVER!) and video quality is better than Phantom 2 vision (not the vision+) it has a very smooth video shooting...and it fits in my backpack perfectly so...my verdict is "I love this drone"
As said in the video, it's between the toy and the tool. And that's why I don't think they will sell a lot of it. If people wants toys, they should just get some other models from Parrot which are cheaper and (i hope) more reliable in terms of maintaining connection. If people want a tool, so as to shoot video for instance, they should just consider some more expensive drone such as the DJI ones.
I will say, other reviews using that device have not complained about this. It could be that there is interference at the area you tested. Not saying that you are wrong, but to retry doing this in another area.
Good job saved the best footage for the last shot.
Would either a iPhone 5s or iPad Air work well with the wifi?
Great review. Thank you! You helped me make my decision and ... I just received my bebop! I have a question: I travel a lot. Far, long and ... lightweight(!). I always take just one medium sized bag/case. The bebop seems too big to bring along on my travels. It also seems too fragile. How do other people do this? Do you bring an extra bag?
Good review. Would have loved some step by step stuff tho
Exactly the kind of review I was looking for. Thanks!
what kinda parrot are u flying mines brilliant
Amazing review
Thanks for the video this really help me make my choice.
;( what did you do about the broken camer :?
Wow I was really looking forward to this thing being good too
iv been a Bebop owner since December, and i have managed to take perfect care of it with only a few minor collisions due to depth perception... the Nvidia Shield Portable is the best transmitter option for this drone. not only is it $200 cheaper than the sky controller, you don't just get joysticks for the Bebop you get a whole new computer to do any other gaming, browsing, or watch movies on. the thing can fit almost anywhere too. oh, and the battery lasts like 8 hrs... until Parrot can figure out the connection problems (only encountered 3-4 times personally) i recommend investing in another company such as Nvidia while solving your issue with physical control of the Bebop. this is only if my Inspire1 batteries are dead btw B)
Thank you for all your blunt truth
Thanks for the heads-up!
woow a very good quality, i think i will buy it
Great review! Fair and well informed.
Not even remotely fair, he was trying to use a drone like he would push an app button hell this guy doesn't realise that his phones wifi, is yes you guessed it limited to a few feet, if he wants distance and absolutely control he needs a sky controller
Fair, what planet do you live on
Earf
The Bebop is a gateway drone!
Iv had a few drones in my time and I came across a parrot bebop 1 for a fair price , only issues I have had is flying at night probably not the best of ideas ! its like it struggles to keep on gps point after a slight mod i soon qured that problem (easy fix) .apart from that the range off my iPhone 6s is rather good , you need to make sure it's set in 2.4ghz then you will get more distance but the fpv video quality won't be as good .but because the storage is built in on the parrot bebop you still get the same 1080p quality when you transfer your videos and photos to your device , remember your inviroment will make a big difference on range and conetivity ! .in the uk where I'm from you can pick a brand new bebop 1 up for £200 , and I think it's a lot of bang for the buck !
I have the 1st bebop (red and black) in the video. It seems the app doesn't give me control over the camera movement. Maybe I downloaded the wrong app from the last time I've used it back in 2017.😕
Verg ... please make a video to tell consumers what to buy ... i wanna know what's the best ^_^
Thanks for saving me make a $400 mistake! I planned on flying it over water, huge cliffs, and over wooded areas (who wouldn't).
+Badass 40s Buy a DJI Phantom 3 standard. much better and it's cheap for that quality
yes but it's ugly and not very fun to fly. With the Bebop it's cool to fly around tree fast and it's a lot easier to handle around obstacles and to go into small spaces. The Phantom is good when all you want is a good flying camera above anything else. For the fun factor and to be able to go to more places without being kicked out or arrested, then the Bebop is the way to go. I agree the video is not very good with the Bebop, lack of fine detail, choppy video etc...but it's damn fun to fly.
Bebop shows how the first mover give empire to competitors.
Were they get this background music
Is it difficult to replace the camera?
Look the tutorial on the parrot chanel
Nathan du25
Thanks, I will.
I really wanted this drone and seeing this review made me want to cry but I have watched other reviews and it's not as bad as he said but I'm still not 100% confident. Can I trust this review?
DO NOT TRUST THIS REVIEW. I have had this drone for nearly a month now and I absolutely love it. I only lost connection after flying it about 100 - 150 meters away. The vertical limits are also incredible. If you are looking for a drone that gets you introduced to the aerial cinematography world, then the Bebop is perfect for you. Depending on your budget, (I'm guessing nothing more than $500) either get the Parrot Bebop, the Parrot Bebop 2, or the DJI Phantom 3.
thanks so much for the reply, I ended up deciding to get the drone anyway but i gotta wait until my birth day : - (
Crap like the Bebop is why I'm over joyed about being a Phantom 3 owner. I've owned versions P1-P3 and never had any issues with them whatsoever. I also have a TBS Disco pro, QAV500, Xhover MPX-230, and a few fixed wings.
i agree 100%... bought the whole kit with the high expectation's that i was in for a great new experience in multirotor flight.
from the first time I used it till now i havent been able to join up with DA and the whole package feels cheap and performs just the same...totaly eratic even when paired to FF3 and Skycontoller.
i won't be buying any more Parrot Product's.
Thats a good battery life for that size and weight. My Miniquad gets 5 minutes maybe on a 1300mah 4s
whats the music???
I have had one for months and flown it many times and I have never had these problems. I also don't have a sky controller. I can take mine almost 2 football fields away and probably further.
Anybody knows what's the song playing at 2:18 ?
This is why you need radio frequency. Wifi good for streaming not reliable for RC
For me the bebop is still more of a toy than a tool.If you are serious about drone video/photography get the DJI phantom. Of course it's much more expensive but it's definitely worth it. Build quality is far superior too.
If you are in an area with wifi the rage is dropped drastically. It works best in fields away from wifi connections.
It's just ur model that has the connection problems! Or the firmware! Or just your iPhone connection!
The Verge : Have you tested if the issues appear on Android phones? Also, Are there firmware updates to fix these problems?
***** Android does have a much better connection than apple. Linus tech tips did a great video on this and did not seem to show many issues with connection.
The Verge hates android though...
I thought that too. What was the motivation behind this video?
DJI is in bed with Apple and Verge is an Apple fawnboi. Figure it out yourself.
I've flown and raced multirotors for a few years now and if you're looking for a diy/performance/upgradeable/moddable powerhouse go build your own for around $500 but if you want one that works with an app and is more commercial look at something like the hexo+.. diy is generally the best bet since sub $500 multirotors really aren't more than toys but if a capable toy is what you're looking for go get the hexo+.
ps: dji sucks.
The bebop 1 was a nightmare, bebop 2 is what it should have been.
Thanks for the very informative video! Will not be getting this model!
So glad I watch this 🤔
so here we are two years later, gettig the spark for the same price.
i use an ipeha cheap controller! i haven't flew it much but never had these problems! but on first flight i crashed and. cracked the camera ;( but it still works! the camera is so exposed! even though i had the hull!
it connects to drone
So a flying death machine!! NICE!
I don't understand your review. I've seen people having issues with the Bebop, but not the ones you had. I've used a Bebop since December 2014 (Christmas gift) and I never had the issues you are showing in this review. I had to return my first one, but that was for one incident that may have been partially my fault anyway. The Bebop is not a perfect drone, but it's not as bad as what you are showing in this review.
Would strongly disagree it, I mastered it in a few hours, the only flaw is the battery,
If you can't fly this you need to find a new career, also having lots of wifi equipment on you phone pad ect WILL clog or jam other signals
This is just a terrible product review, not a terrible product. I watched this review before buying a Bebop drone but I have had the same drone for over two years now and only had one minor repair. Basically the reviewer in this video purchased an expensive drone and flew it recklessly until he crashed it. With all due respect, companies such as Parrot can't design absolute idiot-proof products. If you fly a drone over water or close to concrete, aren't you asking for trouble? Watch my channel for some better examples.
Thank u so much man for this video. I was about to buy it and realised how useless it was .
it is really good drone nowdays you can get it with the controller for 400€ and i think this video is bullshit and you have to point the antenna at the drone so connection wont interupt
I have one and never had this problems. never. looks like he reviewed a messed up drone from the start.
Just saying this here, most of these problems have been adressed whit software updates, i have only about 2h of airtime but it has never flown away from me. the best thing to ensure this is to get an wifi analyzer app and set your wifi channel accordingly.
Sounds like they need to have a recall
That's what she said
And by she I mean chevrolet
Not at all you had a guy trying to piliot a drone at a distance using a shitty iPhone with a small screen, which has a very limited wifi range.
As they say a bad workman blames his tools
Btw he didn't even using a sky comtroler which is where TWO MILE range comes from
nessunday Overton .....that's actually the exact thing he was using
What the verge is trying to say: This quadcopter is pretty shit!
Lol, it really isn't though. All of the connectivity issues have recently been fixed in the new firmware update. For the price point I still think the Bebop is a compelling offer.
+daffy squirt ya mum duck me too i never lost connection
I recent found it on EBay for cyber week, for $99 2 years later, it should be way more then worth it.
Just wait 4 years. The mavic mini will be $499, come with a controller and 3 batteries.
You got a faulty drone I use my phone and get like 150m of range
Blimey!!! You've got to be kidding 😓 How can u spend more than $400 on some toys that u can only operate for 15 min!?!?
Good review. I like guys who save me lots of money.
+Ronald Boutan dude, this guy just sucks, this is a great drone, i have 1 for 2 months and its great, this guy is just stupid, becouse the drone doenst lose conection.
im telling u for 500 $ its the best u can get. but right noow i would prefer phantom 3 standerd (600$) :P
If you want a "tool" drone check out DJI which is a specialised brand on drones not like parrot which makes toys, gps´s, headphones, etc.
If you want a reliable drone by DJI, it is as simple as that. There are also many new image stabilized drones on the market right now that are cheaper and more reliable then bebop.
+Vincent Rogiest - like which one?
Bebop 2 for example and many others released after 2016,.
yeah, but the only one worth mentioning is the Mavic Pro and that is WAY too expensive. The Phantoms are the opposite of being Phantoms, they are SOO APPARENT! I wonder why they called it Phantom...they should have called it Godzilla...old, bulky and ugly design. Now the Mavic Pro is cute, small and portable with great image quality, unfortunately it cost 1200$CAD, so the next best thing is the cute, small and affordable Bebop.
Daniella3d Yuneec breeze is small and has 4K. Let's see what copycat parrot is going to do now,...
Big difference though. The Breeze is a selfie drone like the dobie, the Bebop is also but has way more abilities for flight. Yes the Breeze is 4K un-stabilized only 1080 stabilized (digital stab btw). No way points, only flies with a phone or tab though you could probably gen up a repeater for more range. 15 minutes if you are lucky air time. Now all that said I own both and both have their own advantages as does my Typhoon 4K, H, and my Mavic and other DJI birds. Same reason I own numerous cameras and video cameras. You use what the situation calls for or you make do and really the Bebop is a good compromise especially with the current special for the Bebop2, Skycontroller 2, and Goggles for $499 or less!!
I just purchased the Parrot and I'm not sure about it. I lost connectivity within a few feet, and it crashed into my dresser... already damaging the Styrofoam blade guards... Everything that you said was off, is exactly true... the battery does become unsecured after flying... I used my iPad and my smart phone to fly... I want to use it as a flyover when I DJ crazy parties, like a Party Drone Cam, but I'm not sure it's entirely safe to fly over a crowd of people...
don't fly next to things that will make you lose signal..
iphone 6 has the worst wifi anyways... its not really fair to give bad credits to bebop when the fault is entirely on the apple side... i reach 250m easly with my galaxy s6 edge
thaGkillah I get similar range with my S5, somewhere between 200 m and 250 m. I haven't pushed it further than that yet.
its tying to get away from him, does he work for Dji
Had this drone it constantly disconnected, in the end it just slammed into a wall and killed itself.
Didn't know $499 was considered "cheap."
quad copters is cool
