I've had the set for over a year; it is far superior to any other controller, but does not come close to the distances Parrot states. In open terrain I can maintain control up 700 meters, after which control is spotty. By 725 meters control is lost. I use both the FreeFlight and Auriga apps. I suggest to every Bebop 1 owner to purchase the Auriga Bebop app from the PlayStore. It is superior to the FreeFlight app in many ways, and having both allows you to use the one suitable for the days flights.
Usually, you have to download the update on to your USB flash drive then use it with the usb port on the skycontroller search google for a more complete guide! ;)

Your right the battery has never lasted long enough to test the 1km limit, even with the uprated 2500 battery..

As you can see in the video it goes a little further with the wifi extender but nothing like the distance i get with the skycontroller!
