Is it a total amount spent or a percentage of income? I’m curious cause as a percent of income we spend probably 10%. But as an amount it is very high to what others spend. And are groceries just food or does it include cleaning supplies, hygiene, dog food, detergents, etc. I’m always fascinated by what people spend on groceries. My friends at work get their nails done, highlights in their hair, makeup etc. I buy food. They go on cruises, trips, buy cars. My car is 14 years old, don’t leave the house, but I buy food.

I remember in the 1990’s going out for lunch with a friend who ordered one slice of garlic bread with lunch. It was $1.00, and I recall thinking that was terrible at that time. This was back when a loaf of bread might be to be 59 cents. Since then I have certainly given up eating out, and even then no drinks nor bread ever ordered. Buying flour and yeast, I can bake a loaf of bread even in these times for about $1.00. I stock up on chicken at $1.99 lb. and cut strips and nuggets to freeze same day I come home. I can get whole chicken 99 cents lb. and get those to freeze always using the carcass for bone broth. I have a garden, but save seed and replant next year, so little cost. A great onion is the Walking onion, as the bulbs can be saved for replanting. If I get hungry for sweets, I just go get your cookbook. I rarely buy dessert type foods. When I shop it looks more like I have shopped for ingredients instead of meals. But those ingredients come together nicely into delicious meals.

6 minutes in and I am thinking a rotisserie chicken and a bag of salad mix, 10.00 for a meal for both in a hotel room with leftover for a sandwich next day. Or even get deli meal from grocery store and split it with a salad.
I work outside the home and make a pot of soup and divide it so i can carry soup each day for lunch and a piece of fruit and drink water or a hot tea and I bring the tea bags from home. I get asked why soup everyday, i say it is frugal, homemade and I know what I am eating. I cannot imagine paying 20.00 for delivery and fast food per meal and i do see coworkers do that. That is like 3 weeks of lunches plus for me.
I truly think it is routine for some and others just want to get what they feel like for that day.
My mom was very frugal so i get it honest. I was raised learning to help cook as soon as i was about 2 and old enough to stand in a chair to help make biscuits. My granny loved to see toddlers pat the biscuits out.
Granny made pies and mom made cakes i learned from both, but neither used spices much and that i learned on my own.
Lunchables are one of my least favorite things in the store. They are not only small and expensive but to me not that tasty.
Maybe she just needs a mentor to help her start cooking and preserve leftovers for future meals.

That Toilet Paper Test video, had me laughing so hard!!! It was hilarious. AS for laundry soap, I bought a big box of powdered laundry soap, and I am soon going to need another box. But this one has saved us so much money, using less like that. I won't go back to liquid laundry soap again. Powdered soap is lasts so much longer. I must have saved at least 100.00 by not buying liquid laundry soap, and by using so much less. We live on a little farm, so sometimes we use more, as some of the farm clothes get pretty dirty. But what a Great way to save money!!!

Pop Tarts are "simply" a little filling (it gets less and less with each decade) inbetween two layers of pie dough. Type "diy pop tart recipie" to get a lot of returns. Read more than one recipie or set of instructions to pick up tips and tricks for better success. Most of the recipies call for home made pie dough which would give you even more savings over uncooked, store bought dough. But go with the store bought dough and even purchased jams for some savings over ready-made, store bought pop tarts. Most of the recipies call double to quadruple the filling as what's found today in ready-made pop tarts so, take care when making cost comparisons.

We eat lunch at home every day (I homeschool my 6 kids). We do grilled cheese, leftovers from dinner, a baked potato (throw in the microwave) topped with whatever I have around, a bag of steamed veggies in the microwave topped with a couple fried eggs. So many ideas... a baked sweet potato topped with cottage cheese. A tortilla (or 2) filled with mozzarella cheese and pepperoni and Italian spices folded up and heated on a skillet.. or refried beans and cheese. Dip in sour cream and salsa.

I tried instacart once when they lured me with first order free. I dont like other ppl selecting produce for me so I made it simple...my order consisted of 8 or 12 boxes cereal (really good sale price). I noticed organic green olives on sale which this brand rarely is so I added that in. It was fun i admit to see my groceries appear at the door...until I saw the jar of olives. He made a substitution, choosing non-organic mezzetta olives at full price! I looked at receipt and those olives cost ~$7, way more than the sale price I asked for. If personal shoppers make decisions like that, forget it. If every item in order is on sale do ya think maybe the customer wants only sale items? Simplest grocery order and he blew it. Havent used instacart since.

I am slightly disabled, and I still go to the grocery store myself. I make it through my cart for a makeshift crutch then resting at the pharmacy chairs before proceeding. I ordered a green pepper once for pick up and complained online that it was the smallest green pepper I had ever seen. Something as simple as a green pepper is chosen carefully by me, as they can range in size greatly plus I make certain no blemishes. That was it! Then a couple of months later I was in produce choosing carefully a green pepper, and a tiny girl around 10 darted over, grabbed a pepper, and took it to her mom. Maybe I should have kept my big mouth shut, but I just had to take a teaching moment and try to show the little girl benefit of carefully choosing an available much larger pepper. Her mom chimed in and said, “Oh it’s okay, I do Instacart.”which says it all. None of these workers can be as selective and prideful as we are. I even have weighed bags of potatoes and can be 1/2 pound difference. Once young cashier leaning on scales inadvertently until finally lady in front of me caught it and said, “I don’t want to pay $5.00 for one onion.” Tawra can teach us a lot and her cookbook can save us hundreds. The cookbook cuts out eating out because home cooked better. Cookbook cuts out useless expensive ingredients we may use once. She always has sales for MoTher’s Day and Christmas. My cookbook was a request by me for Christmas gift. Hundreds of cookbooks out there, but a tightwad like me will invest in a gift that saves me money. Watch and learn.

And kids need a good balance of nutrition because they are growing. If we're home and not ultra physical, treadmill while you work, then ... that's a food saver there. of course we get board, so have a good 1/2 pound of meat a day and eat less oxalate foods.

Even when we had 4 teenagers under the roof, we didn't spend anywhere CLOSE to that much in a month for groceries! That would maybe be 3 months of groceries. Now that we're empty nesters that's closer to 6 months of groceries for us. I was traveling regularly for work the first half of this year, so to actually come out ahead, I would do a grocery order (yes, on instacart... Lol) as soon as I checked in at the hotel to get foods to bring my lunch to work instead of eating out with everyone else. Cheaper to hop in the car unless you're disabled or no car and no ride at the time to use Insta cart. You may see something different and cheaper or unadvertised sale. Get the food once or twice a month then. I look for the cheapest packs of meat. Those dollars add up.

I love the basal you have behind the onions. What a great little garden. That's what I need, a little garden. Ours was too big and overwhelming. I love these videos. I so want to get my neighbors to agree to do a show. OMG, Tawra! She works from home and Doordashes her breakfast and lunch most days, just found out he gets a $10 meal from Culvers every night on the way to work. And they are struggling to pay the bills. So sad!

Yes the convenience foods! I have so much more food than they do , we have three people and spend probably 1/3-1/2 of what she does. I do understand if you have a very busy and stressful job that limits time to cook from scratch, I have health issues but still cool from scratch. I just have to break up the jobs involved, plan ahead.
I also agree that it’s instacart cost that’s killing her budget. Many stores do pick up groceries, if she could go do the pickup that would save so much.

Second comment - after I thought some more. Would food prep or glass food meal containers be helpful to her. Husband could make extra dinner and she would have a meal ready to go for lunch? I do that a lot with leftovers, I put them in the fridge with a sticky note of what it contains, it has really helped reduce our food waste.

Sometimes you have to think outside of he box or in other words buy some items for cheap at other places besides grocery stores. My husband & I do not drink soda drinks at all & our now grown kids were raised not drinking these. However the girlfriend of 1 of my sons does drink soda drinks & doesn’t like iced tea, hot tea, coffee, milk, or water. So we do buy soda drinks for her & her 2 teenagers when we have family get togethers. Our town only has 2 grocery stores & we do not have a Walgreens in our town. However a town 20 miles away does have a Walgreens & when Walgreens has their soda drinks on sale for 3 packs for $9. That is $3 for a 12 pack or 25 cents per can. I guess I should figure in the gas to drive there & back (40 miles round trip).

I went to the pumpkin patch thing. Fresh squeezed cider. So yummy. We got a pumpkin for 5 canned goods. I saw my three friends there. I get the same 6 things every week. I'd be interested in doing one of these. I have an Android phone. I already know what you are going to say though. I like the nacho launchable but can't justify the cost. I make my own Sargento snack things. Take cheese sticks, cut them up, get whatever chocolate chips you like and whatever peanuts you want. Thank you so much for telling me how to make sweet tea.

I love this new video style! I have made much more progress with lowering my grocery bill since you have started these. Thank you! I'm curious to know if you have a list of the amount that we should be spending per person or by family size each month on average? I'm curious to know about how far I need to go with this to be at my best.
When I first married back in 2001, I already had a 4 yr old son, so we were a family of 3. I was able to get our bill as low as $125 a month. Adjusted for inflation, that would be $213 or $70.30 per person. I can't imagine being able to be that good now. I currently have 3 children still at home between the ages of 6-16, so I'm feeding a family of 5 on a regular basis.

We budget $1,500 for groceries for 3, but this includes all industrial cleaners and paper products and cleaning supplies and pots, pans, kitchen towels, shampoo, perfume, antiperspirants, toothpaste, floss, toothbrushes, foil, baggies, soap, female pads, dish soap, kitchen brushes, toilet paper, paper towels, dryer sheets, etc., eating out and all entertainment and grocery food items is all in this one budget line item-we usually do not spend over $950, budget per mn., was $2,400, got down to $1,500, goal is $1,200 or less per mn.-so I am not sure what food actually is cost-wise bc we shop all items in all stores locally. We do tend to buy meat on sale and that is what we eat for the wk.

Great ideas and wow! how fast all those things add up. I too need to watch and shop the adds. QUESTION - I live in Southish Texas (College Station area) I have the hardest time with onions getting moldy in the pantry. I think you said to store in the fridge. Also I store potatoes in the fridge cause they just rot otherwise, but they do not last long there either. So .... how do you stock up on them? Im guessing maybe a month worth? Thanks for any suggestions on keeping these items as fresh as possible.
