It shows that to clear the world of evil, the person wanting to do so has to be absolutely pure otherwise they become the last remaining evil to exist, the world has to be a balance of good and bad. I admire light for his vision of the future and how despite his dark twisted side, at the end of the day all he wanted was the betterment of our world. Fire cannot be beaten with fire.
at the end of the series, no one really won if you think about it Light lost in general but the 'winning side' lost Mellow and L Misa lost the person who she loved the most Lights mum lost her husband and her daughter is left traumatized L lost Watari overall, The World lost itself

I really thought Naomi would be the biggest side character, and her disappearance that somehow she survived the death note but... she really was dead I was waiting everytime that she might pop up. I really liked her but she was too smart, her working with L might end the anime in 4 episodes.

Light dies without completing his ambitious goal on making the world better...
