So here we have the Wizard of OZ RPG made by Media Vision. Yes it does in fact exist and it's pretty damn good. As mentioned above it was created by the makers of the excellent Wild Arms series and even shows some similarities in terms of game design and presentation. The way status effects work and balancing during bosses are straight out of Wild Arms 5(as in if they feel like it they can end you in a turn). But there's allot of unique elements I've never seen in other RPG's particularly the turn system. Each side(you and enemy) gets 4 action points regardless of how many units they have, the enemy will always have their units out in the open but they have 2 rows, you on the other hand will only have the active characters out on the field. These action points can be spent to make your characters move, Dorothy and Scarecrow both eat 1, Lion eats 2 and Tinman eats 3 and you can make different combinations depending on the situation. You could for example make Dorothy move 4 times or make her and Tinman both move once or Scarecrow, Lion and Dorothy all act once. Each combination you can think of will have an advantage and a disadvantage and you can swap your loadout on every single turn. there's also very few useless spells which is something I really appreciate. Other than that the movement system is bizarre, you don't use D-pad and instead you roll a trackball on the bottom screen with your stylus. it sounds atrocious but it is very fun once you pick up speed. what also makes exploration of dungeons more involved is the ability to create signs on turns, making it easier to know which roads are already explored fully and which lead to something you gotta come back to later. There's also a dog button because of course there is The story is quite silly and is essentially a fanfic of Wizard of oz with some interesting new ideas and lots and lots of cuteness. Just as usual I won't go into details as to not spoil the plot. The game does have some annoying issues, I feel that the grinding a bit too slow and annoying. At the beginning you can just go straight to the next stage and not get killed in a flash but soon you'll discover that the game becomes steadly more demanding, forcing you to go through each stage you've cleared at least once more if not more. That in on itself is not horrible, what is horrible is the pitiful loot you find in treasure boxes. Sometimes you'll find basic potions locked behind blockades that can only be disabled after nearly finishing the game, that's just wrong. What also doesn't help is that it's really hard to grind money as it only sometimes appears after defeating an enemy. Even the "secret weapons" you find in the dungeons are 100% worse than whatever you can buy which is really disappointing. HOWEVER you can actually eliminate most of these issues by exploring old dungeons and only using scarecrow and having him steal everything. As every item costs at least 1 gold piece (max of what you can earn from an encounter) you can make multiple times that by just robbing your enemies and selling off the loot. One problem I have that does not get solved by thevious scarecrow is the glass ceiling of being able to do the super bosses... In this game if you do moderate amount of grinding to beat the final boss you'll reach about level 40. The super bosses (the dragons mentioned in the timecodes) require you to be at least 70... that just isn't right when there's no way to multiply your EXP or anything like that to make the process quicker, no secret weapons worth a damn or even a NG+ mode. What they could have done instead was maybe start the super bosses at level requirement of about 45 so you could go there after beating the final boss to test your skills and they move up the levels by defeating those bosses in some specific order(that';s how Wild Arms games did it) it's part of the reason why I only show what they look like but not actually beat them it's too much effort for no reward. But yeah still a fun RPG with a fun story and totally a recommendation to anyone who likes silly cute things.
Dragons and black ghosts will let you know if you are underlevelled. If you defeat the Winter Witch and return to Oz with the final "egg," he will turn against you and kick you out of his castle and the defeated Winter Witch will take his place as the one who will save your progress, this time at the Evergreen of November. For the fastest possible way to continue levelling up for the dragon super bosses, follow the yellow brick road after Oz has kicked you out of his castle and you start seeing new enemies on that yellow brick road. Those guys will give you more experience points than most enemies that you have previously defeated.
Too bad this game doesn't have much in a way of making grinding straightforward, like how wild arms 3 had the creeping chaos enemy that made level and money grinding a breeze.
My only gripe with the game was that there was no reliable way to get coins aside from the ones on the overworld. It's the same problem I had with Sonic Chronicles; in an RPG you need to have a way to consistently get funds since that genre relies heavily on money and money management.
Actually I found a reliable way to get money. Not to get coins spawn but to collect funds. All you gotta do is go through old maps, set your party to Strawman X4 and steal everything! Each item is worth at least 1 gold coin and you can get up to 4 from every encounter. that's how I grinded in this game.
@@nikodem123asdf Really wish that there were others playing the game at the time of release. If I knew about that sort of thing I probably would've stuck with the game and kept going till the end. But still, IMO it's still bad game design.
@@ezracook6658 yeah it's odd and honestly the game has no place forcing you replay stages other than the ones that have dragon masters in them. The loot you find in treasure chests is pathetic. I was initially going to show my revisits of stages in the longplay but when i realized that stealing stuff from any encounter yealds better loot than the treasure chests, often hidden behind barriers that cannot be open till end of the game i just cut them out. The biggest offence in my opinion is the fact that the secret weapons you van find in some treasure chests are always worse than what's in the store at the moment. It completely kills the point of exploring beyond the bare minimum especially since even grinding for money/stealing stuff is easiest done by just going in snd out of a teleporter... I still like this game and i value it more than wild arms alter code f (which is in my opinion the worst thing they ever made), but i can't disregard it's flaws.
It's fine and all, but... A Japanese studio made a Wizard of Oz game, which isn't licensed in the first place, licensed as a property of Warner Bros, WHICH IS OWNED BY AT&T?! I need a therapy
OK so a bit of explanation Media Vision made the game with no intention of it being a licenced product and when Xseed games decided to bring it to the west they had to buy rights to release it from WB.
The reason why they needed permission from Warner Bros. to distribute this in the west is because they used the “red shoes” featured in the MGM film adaptation instead of the silver ones in L. Frank Baum’s book. WB bought almost all of the distribution rights to MGM films between 1997-1999 before Amazon bought MGM in 2022. The Wizard of Oz is indeed in the public domain, but they designed Dorothy after the MGM film version by giving her red shoes aka “ruby slippers.” This is relevant today with the slippers in Wicked following the book in being silver instead of red/ruby because it was made by Universal not MGM.
i got this game when i was little like maybe 8 on my ds lite. it glitched before i could ever finish it and the screen would freeze no matter how many times i re inserted it and tried to play. i just got it again and it’s doing the same thing. does anyone else have this problem?
I had a dslite that would overheat when playing 3d games like strang journey of final fantasy crystal chronicles. It would also often freeze if i closed the ds.
because of the License deal they had to get into with WB the game only had a limited print and that's why there were few copies made, similar thing happened with another Xseed game release "Brave Story a New Traveler"
Almost? I have a New2DsXL and highly consider this to be a 3DS graphic-quality game. Many top tier 3DS games like Kingdom Hearts 3D, Xenoblade Chronicles 3D, dont go beyond this point of graphic quality. If 3DS had a little higher resolution, then maybe... Also, Dementium and Moon running on Desmume with upscaled resolution to 2x gets basically the same result as the 3DS remasterered version of these titles.
I was expecting something like along the lines of the movie turned into a game but this doesn’t really make me think of the movie version with Judy Garland…. a shame

OK so a bit of explanation
Media Vision made the game with no intention of it being a licenced product and when Xseed games decided to bring it to the west they had to buy rights to release it from WB.
Okay a little update as of 2022: WB is no longer owned by AT&T, and they're now Warner Bros. Discovery
The first few Oz books are public domain so they shouldn't have had to get WB's permission
The reason why they needed permission from Warner Bros. to distribute this in the west is because they used the “red shoes” featured in the MGM film adaptation instead of the silver ones in L. It was actually media vision. Xseed games (the american publisher) had to licence wizard of oz from WB so they could release this game in the US.

What’s the theme song the game?
I’ve never understood why they had to get Warner’s permission, isn’t Wizard of Oz public domain?
There are elements and things that WB will fight you on. It's not right. It's barely legal. But it's the name of the game.

It's probably based on the original source novel (which had 13 sequels) published in 1900, moreso than the MGM movie from the '30s.
