trans guy here, thanks so much for the info! i am about 3.5 weeks post op and have definitely begun to experience all of those symptoms except for headaches. I'm going to start with shoulder rolls every day as i need to be 6-8 weeks out to raise my arms up, but will definitely incorporate the rest when I'm able! glad to see information for this out there
“TRANSGENDER MEN” as the start of the vid is amazing ❤😂 I got top surgery July 2024, so it’s been almost 4 months. On top of having a job where I have to bend my head and generally poor posture all my life, top surgery has made my shoulders and the muscles in my neck almost feel frozen- and I often get stress headaches!! So grateful for these tips ❤
This is absolutely so wonderful to watch; you have no idea this means to my community. Incredibly understandable, clever, well-informed, and honestly a video I can't wait to rewatch post-op! Sincerely, an insanely grateful trans man
I love these stretches but they're a little ambitious for me right now, 1 week post op. What's been great for me is just lying down flay on the floor. My chest was so tight that even just that natural gravity pull for the shoulders really unlocks things in a gentle way. A deep stretch but mostly around the sternum, not near the incisions or drain sites, so I think it's pretty low risk
I haven’t had top surgery yet, but had to have an emergency spinal fusion done. 1 week is often too early for most surgeries to do a lot of stretches and movement. I was in the hospital for the entire first week of being post op. I was bed bound and not allowed to get up for like 5 days. First catheter foley from surgery, then an external foley (feels weird af) and then either a urinal or bed pan. They had to bathe me and the physical therapist had to make sure I could walk after it. I still had a drain in me before it fell out while I was turning around in bed on its own. If you have drains I would try to limit movement until it’s out, because blood. But obviously ultimately listen to the medical professionals on your care team and your body, they know what’s best for you not a random stranger like me. But like don’t force yourself past your current limits, you are still healing and need to let the healing happen with minimal complications as you can manage.
Shared this video with a trans male patient yesterday. It was similar to his symptoms. Pertinent to his care. He's going to share it with the top surgery group he belongs to.
Just had top surgery, so this is invaluable advice. Will discuss with my surgeon when it would be appropriate to start these types of exercises. And I live in the Bay, so maybe I will find my way to your practice!
Thank you for the video. it really means a lot, because there is so little trans inclusive health & sports advice out there, and contacting any kind of medical experts as a trans person can be scary. If you ever wish to redo this however, I'd suggest addressing the compeeting interests of muscle health and scar care here. Many people who had top surgery end up with these problems especially because we are told to protect the scars and we are not sure when and how to exercise safely.
This is amazing!!! I thought I was the only one experiencing weird/odd neck pain/tightness. I almost felt like I couldn’t keep my head up, or it wanted to go down. Especially when in the car or having to sit up for a long period of time. I’m just wondering... how long would you have to wait until doing these exercises? I’d imagine you wouldn’t want to do them too early on, as it may stretch the scars as they’re healing. Just a question! Cheers, Chase
Chase Benjamin hey chase you’re not alone this is extremely common. Yes great I wouldn’t do the stretches until after the incision sites have completely healed, however you can start to work on breaking up the scar tissue and getting some gentle range of motion into the arms and shoulders after about 3-5 weeks Great to hear from you Dr Jordan
Thanks so much for the quick reply! I’m a bit over 6 weeks, so I’m all healed and have a pretty good range of motion back. Basically doing what my body says is okay. 👌 Wish I had a partner to do the massage technique with, but will try on my own to massage in general. Thanks so much for sharing this info! It’ll help so many people :)
I'm getting top surgery in several hours and I'm so excited yet nervous! I need a chiropractor so much tho even way before getting top from slouching so much
@@chumimiii533 thanks so much! I got my surgery back in the beginning of August but my scars already started to fade after about a month or Two now they blend right in😍 well not completely haha but for the most part, not all red and angry like before lol
I know this is older but in the beginning when you are talking about the spine curvature and around the area around the shoulders and shoulders blades, could that cause that area of the back to go kind of numb? Or numb feeling?
you are literally saying how to strech the scars even more when they are already going to get streched from everyday tasks. these exercises might be good after a few months, maybe. but definitely not right after surgery as you say.
I would say they typically are not getting region specific stretches through every day tasks, which is why we see so many patients who's shoulders have rolled forward, chest is tight, neck is tight. The every day stretches will help prevent falling into this posture, and the specific fascia and muscle release will help break up the scar tissue - dr. Jordan
I'm here because I had top surgery 3 weeks ago and have those symptoms, this video was very helpful. Thanks! *coughs* you're so hot tho *coughs* Sorry xD

That’s so great to hear thank you so much Doc. That’s why I wanted to make it
About the 2nd one-- Wait, but aren't you not supposed to lift your arms above your head after top surgery..?
heyitssjace this is something I recommend for people who I’ve seen years after having top surgery

Thank you! i haven't had my surgery yet but have had these exact pains for years already.

Chase Benjamin great to hear, you could also try to use the thumb of your opposite hand.
The third one is amazing. For some reason under the scar tissue feels like a plastic candy wrapper crunching. I’m a few days shy of one month post op.
I'm so happy I got into Crossfit because these are the same excercises you do I can't wait to have surgery this week
So glad you.put all this infor.ation out here! Goning to be SO impostant 2 many may ppl
You are so respectful thank you so much🙏🙏🙏

This is so helpful. Thank you!
This is basically everything my surgeon told me NOT to do
Why?
This is for after being healed
This is great info! Thank you! How long after top surgery can we begin these sort of exercises?
Probably at least a month post op cause we can't raise our arms yet
LOVE that you made this video Dr. Jordan!
8pitch I loved making it! I hope it helps someone
The Source Chiropractic it has!! :)
Very well put in the beginning
Fabius fierce glad you liked it
Don’t think I’m post op enough to try these apart from maybe the shoulder roll as I’m only 8 days post op
I know this is older but in the beginning when you are talking about the spine curvature and around the area around the shoulders and shoulders blades, could that cause that area of the back to go kind of numb? Or numb feeling?
Hi Flynn, yes I believe that type of numb feeling is mostly a pulling of the muscles and connective tissue
@@TheSourceChiropractic OMG I MIGHT HAVE THIS 😅
