  • We all know the stigma that minivans carry and for some that’s simply enough to deter a purchase even though deep down we know they’re more comfortable and versatile than SUVs. So Kia decided to design one that flips the script on what’s cool and what isn’t. This is the first-ever 2022 Carnival MPV.
    MSRP as-tested: $47,770

Recent owner of the EX trim in Ghost Grey colour. I needed a 3-row people hauler. I test drove Atlas (no 3rd row USB, but bonus CD-player in glove compartment) & Pacifica (thin 2nd row seat cushions with stow & go); also thought about the Sienna (but saw too many uphill straining videos). So, I opted for the Carnival based on price (so many standard safety features), style (outshines the competition in my opinion) and largest cargo space behind 3rd row (seriously). The audio could be much better but once adjusted to strike a decent balance between normal radio and wireless android auto / apple car play, it's acceptable. I did notice the odd gear shifting but after switching out of SMART mode to normal or sport, issue was not noticeable. Too bad AWD is not available. Keeping my fingers crossed for no issues, but if any happy for their amazing warranty.

Best trim level FOR ME, is the EX+ (in Canada trim levels different). I need the removable seats (not available in top trim level). Still...wanna see something weird, look at the oil filter on this thing. It's not a spin on. It's a cartridge insert, with filters only available from dealers. I decided to wait a year, and see the Consumer Reports from year 1.

I'm not the intended market for any mini-van, yet somehow, there's just an x-factor here and I just love it! Can just see myself in the second row lounge seat for a lunchtime power nap. Rex the Giant Schnauzer would have such an easy time just stepping in and stretching out. It just looks so well-proportioned, too. Yes, it has some quirky shortcomings, but like a happy Lab that sheds and drools a little, all is quickly forgiven. I almost don't even mind the shiny black wheels! 😳

Wireless Android Auto and Apple Car Play currently cannot be added to to the larger screen due to licensing issues. Google and Apple want their navigation apps as default driving aid instead of the KIA navigations software so until they work this out it is only avaliable on the smaller screens.

I like minivans, wouldn't have a problem driving one at all, very useful, I just don't really have a need for one at the time. I was in the Carnival a couple weeks ago and it's super nice, very good looking and very premium looking inside and out. I would like to feel I am responsible for the new logo, I have complained about it online for years and said it was hurting their sales.

    • @alexwalker8422

Make sure you clean your battery air intake filter, if you have a hybrid of course. Hybrid batteries are notorious for unreliability, it all comes down to if you take care of them. I am not sure all of them are like this, but, I am guessing all of them are using air from inside the car, and that a majority of them are located around the feet level of the rearmost seats.

Kia/Hyundai auto transmissions have serious issues that have plagued them since the early 2000s. Stuttering, going to neutral for no reason, dropping gears randomly. The drivetrain warranty is solid, but why go through the hassle if it isn't built well to begin -- let alone experiencing stuttering right off the lot?? Having owned 5 Kia/Hyundai products over the last two decades, this kind of hassle deserves a hard pass.

    • @joebrown9621

Hyundai/Kai transmission is the toughest part not a single issue..

Liked your review just because it was nicely done. Else, I don’t really have any affinity with the Kia brand regardless of all the bells and whistles it offers at a great price. And I say this based on Kia’s reliability in India. It was initially well received given it’s a bit premium over its sister brand, Hyundai but it was later found that the same Kia models sold in India had an inferior build quality over that sold in international market with average (but not poor) crash test ratings. It’s a shame. Such a promising brand but is slowly loosing customers due to average reliability.

We had one for 5 weeks and got rid of it. Very poor lighting in the respect there are no lights on when unlocking (the mirrors can fold out automatically and there are LED's behind the door handles) but our Pacifica has approach lights on unlocking the car. There was no ambient lights and the buttons to put on the interior lights were not illuminated. Plugging a wire into your phone for carplay means it can't charge at the same time. To buy the top of the line and find that there's no wireless carplay is a joke. And there's no wi-fi hot spot. The entertainment system left a lot to be desired. I sold it back to a dealer and we're going to wait for the '22 Pacifica. Also, be aware of the small print in the 5 year warranty. Read it carefully.

I bought the very top trim model of the 2020 Pacifica Hybrid. Always had an intermittent rattling noise on the front right side of the vehicle that the dealer could not find or fix. The hybrid cooling valve (unknown exact part name) went out and it was at the dealer for right at a month being repaired. No spare tire. Go on a trip and have an unrepairable flat in the middle of nowhere and you will never buy a vehicle without a spare again.

Anybody else disgusted by the obsession over mundane convenience issues taking precedence over how often you're gonna have to replace or repair the car? Some car models a while back cranked out million milers without major repairs multiple times, such as the 2006 Honda Civic; 300,000 miles should be the bare minimum at this point. Perhaps car companies are just incapable, I am not very confident it isn't a problem with planned obsolescence BS we all know and love.
