I was blessed to be in the audience for that taping of her pilot she talked about. I was so shocked that it did not get picked up. I also got to meet Carol that night and it was a dream come true.

I went to a taping of Coach and Empty Nest, and it was exactly as they describe it here (especially the Empty Next experience): brutal! Never again will I subject myself to that. Back in the old days, like Carol said, everything was perfected BEFORE the audience came in for the taping. Lines were all completely memorized, and there was only a single taping of each episode (these days they do two tapings and pick and choose shots from each taping, then edit them together). So the performers back in the old days, like Lucille Ball and Carol Burnett, had everything down pat before they brought in the audience. Lucy's shows were said to have been filmed inside of 45 minutes (stopping only for costume and set changes), whereas now they will spend four hours shooting a 22-minute episode. Ridiculous! Lucy was a strict task master (no re-takes), but she had to be because she wanted to give a professional performance to her studio audience. My memory of Empty Next is some of the actors kept flubbing their lines (and they thought it was funny when they messed up), so they had to reshoot over and over again. And yes, the writers were there, too, and they kept stopping and rewriting lines right there in the middle of taping! They would film for about 60 seconds, then stop for ten minutes. Reshoot the same 60 seconds one or two more times. And they would expect us (and ask us) to react (i.e., laugh) at the same thing already just saw performed 10 minutes earlier. And they would have to keep reminding us of the plot because, with all those stops and starts, you would forget what the show was about.

That explains why laugh tracks are always added on live studio audience sitcoms, because by the time the director gets the take they want, the audience has seen that shit so many fucking times, it isn’t funny anymore.
