    I've been waiting for this rule set since I was very young, and right now I'm decently old. Happy to have placed an order as soon as the pre-order went up on the site. All of my 7th century Saxon, Welsh, Pictish, and Irish armies are smiling. At least, I think they are. They're tiny guys, so one has to look very closely.
    Thank you Richard and James.

    Excellent!! Exciting to see another entry into the Early Medieval/Mythic genre. How does Midgard compare or differ with other Early Medieval/Mythic miniatures games like Saga (Studio Tomahawk), Ragnarok (Osprey Games), Brethren (Sutton-O'Connor), Oathmark (Osprey Games), Frostgrave (Osprey Games), Warhammer: Old World (Games Workshop), Age of Sigmar (Games Workshop), Kings of War (Mantic Games), or Middle-Earth Strategy Battle Game (Games Workshop)? Is the reputation mechanism geared towards campaign play, where player characters build or destroy their reputation over a series of battles and skirmishes, or is the reputation more aimed at episodic battles that highlight a character at a specific moment in time/mythology? How does force balance work: point-buy, army lists, etc, and is the goal to have equal forces or more historical, heroic play where 30 stood against 100? Are there any Arthurian elements to the game or is this strictly in the Vikings (Norse, Danes, Swedes) wheelhouse?

    I didn't know I needed this until now! What about the command and control systems?

    • @Mogsymakes
      @Mogsymakes 2 месяца назад +1

      Units are organised into Contingents (loosely equivalent to medieval ‘battles’) with one of more Heroes commanding each.
      Most Units can ‘activate’ automatically, but need to take Command tests if in stress situations (trying to move more than once, attempting to move once Stamina damage has been taken, hit by missile fire etc). If Units fail a Command Test, they can reroll it if a Hero in command expends a Mighty Deed. However, Heroes only have a limited supply of these each Turn, and will often want to use them for other things such as avoiding wounds, attacking the enemy or challenging to single combat.
      So, once battle is joined, Heroes rarely have enough Mighty Deeds to keep everything under control, and command starts to fragment.

    • @chrisrobinson196
      @chrisrobinson196 2 месяца назад +1

      @@Mogsymakes I'll need to figure them out better once I see the rules, I may need to grow some units; it is a skirmish project that I'd look to upscale. I've set it in the Vedic era to remove it as much as possible from modern religions in the area (tough with India since it's had more continuity and the deities are more, well, hands-on). Proper figures are tough to come by for the era, so other than avoiding obviously Muslim and Buddhist equipment and symbolism, I've cherrypicked from most of Indian history and handwave away the technicalities.
      I have lots of heroes, plus nagas, some ogres, tigermen, and monkeymen from mythology. Foot soldiers are the gap.

    I’m looking forward to these - how well do they work with shieldwall armies, dealing with the push and scramble that rules often struggle to portray effectively and excitingly?

      @@Mogsymakes no I can’t - most odd!

    • @Mogsymakes
      @Mogsymakes 2 месяца назад +1

      @@Hennessee-JedAh well, I’ll try again. 😊
      Although Forces are composed of individual Units, they are best used in a solid battle line with supporting Units behind. Support is a key element of the game, as an unsupported Unit is vulnerable in melee combat - therefore you want Units to your flanks and rear.
      Placement of Heroes is also important- they need to be fighting in the front line to gain Reputation and inspire the troops, but in doing so they can also be vulnerable. There’s a careful balance here between heroism and survival!
      Once in combat, Units inflict Stamina damage on each other - losing Units are pushed back, sometimes causing additional casualties as they are forced into each other (I’m very much a subscriber to the point of view that more people were killed in retreat and rout than during the actual hand to hand fighting). Again, Heroes can help in these critical areas of the fight by helping the line to hold.
      Overall, I think it has enough of feeling of shieldwall combat about it without being an exact simulation rather than a game.
      Hope that helps. The next videos will cover a game play through so you should be able to see some of that in action.

    • @Mogsymakes
      @Mogsymakes 2 месяца назад +2

      Great, thank you! Yes, there’s a full chapter of flying rules. Midgard is mainly a ground combat game, so it’s not intended to accommodate a fully-winged army, but a few units of Harpies or whatever is no problem.

  • @billcedarheath387
    @billcedarheath387 2 месяца назад +1

    I was hoping that this was more of a Skirmish size game with around 10 or so figures per side. I have some really nice Viking miniatures files from Asgard Rising that I’d like to get on the table. Just not with big army ways.

    • @Mogsymakes
      @Mogsymakes Месяц назад

      There is a big clue in the title and front cover, so sorry it’s not the skirmish game you’re looking for- maybe try Ravenfeast? Asgard Rising files are just amazing, I’ve finally ordered my first ones. Obviously you may not want to paint a Force of 80-100 minis, but plastics like Frostgrave, Victrix and Oathmark offer a very reasonable way to put a larger army together that would mix well with the Asgard Rising style.

    • @billcedarheath387
      @billcedarheath387 Месяц назад

      @ I’ve had Ravenfeast since it was released to the public. It’s solid but there always seems to be something more you’d like to see. Adding variety to the rules pile is always a desire of mine. I wasn’t aware of this title until it showed up in my feed with this video. It goes to show I’m all about Viking themed games. 😉
