I think some of these analyses are a little backwards. "Turning back too late from the grass, or the stick, or the dog, or the light..." isn't George saying that he gets too easily distracted from his work and turns back to it later than he should, it's the opposite. He's saying that he's so engrossed in painting the grass, the stick, the dog, or the light that he turns back to the outside world (Dot) too late, by which time she has given up on him and moved on.
