Earlier this week, SB 1160, introduced by well-known gun control supporter Sen. Anthony Portantino, was set to be discussed in the Senate Public Safety Committee. However, it was removed from the agenda by Portantino's team.
The committee's analysis of the bill reveals several reasons why Sen. Portantino may have decided against presenting his proposal. Key points from the analysis include:
1) The bill lacked support, facing strong opposition from numerous police associations across the state.
2) Committee staff questioned the necessity of creating another firearm database, adding to the many managed by the Department of Justice (DOJ), which is a recurring concern for the DOJ itself.
3) There were issues regarding the harshness of the proposed penalties and the insufficient timeframe for firearm owners to adhere to the new regulations.
4) Delta Waterfowl, a national conservation organization, criticized the bill for imposing an undue tax on law-abiding hunters and sportspersons in the state, seeing it as a step toward the ultimate goal of firearm confiscation.
5) Additionally, concerns about the bill infringing on Second Amendment rights were raised, with the committee staff suggesting that the bill's constitutionality was uncertain, hinting at an overly optimistic view of its legal defensibility.
The California Rifle and Pistol Association (CRPA) has been actively opposing this bill and continues to be alert in its efforts to ensure its defeat. It's clear that Sen. Portantino, with the backing of the Governor and well-funded activist groups, aims to heavily tax and regulate legal gun ownership to the point of non-existence, leaving guns only in the hands of criminals.
It's likely that this bill, or a version of it, will be reintroduced. It's crucial to remain vigilant and strong in the face of these challenges.

I'm afraid then when it comes to California, and as long as Dems rule the state, nothing they see as 'good' that hits a roadblock is truly dead... it is just delayed.
WHY aren't we holding elected officials to their Oath of Office? They should have to personally PAY the court costs, etc. for frivolous legislation that they know is unconstitutional?!?
A registry is unconstitutional period
ANY gun control laws are presumptively unconstitutional, However, California does not care one iota about constitutionality of their gun laws. As long as they can get them on the books and enforced they will tie them up in court for decades. It doesn't help that the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals largely agrees with California on gun control. They will help California tie these cases up in court.
Forced registration of ANY private property is a violation of the 5th Amendment.
The KommieFornia Legislature, Governor and Courts are DEMs. DEMs hate the Constitution and Bill of Rights and refuse to follow them.

Hawaii has required firearms to be registered for as long as I remember. How are they able to get away with this 💩?

Firearm Owners' Protection Act 1986 Under 18 U.S.C. §926, the Attorney General is authorized to prescribe the rules and regulations necessary to carry out the GCA. Section 6 of FOPA amended §926 to prohibit a registry of firearms, firearms owners, or firearms transactions. The pertinent language of §926 reads No such rule or regulation prescribed after the date of the enactment of the Firearms Owners’ Protection Act may require that records required to be maintained under this chapter or any portion of the contents of such records, be recorded at or transferred to a facility owned, managed, or controlled by the United States or any State or any political subdivision thereof, nor that any system of registration of firearms, firearms owners, or firearms transactions or dispositions be established. Nothing in this section expands or restricts the Secretary’s [Attorney General’s] authority to inquire into the disposition of any firearm in the course of a criminal investigation.

NO, it's about how anti-gun legislatures attempt to circumvent the Constitutional governmental restriction of 2A. The Bruen ruling by SCOTUS amplifies the 2A restriction on government by providing some definitions.
As far as I'm concerned though SCOTUS did not go far enough. It should have overturned every law that currently violates 2A and there are many. Not the least of which were the NFA and others.

You totally lost me on the part where anyone actually goes through the process to register their guns with the local Tyrannicy regardless of whether this goes into effect or not.
Criminals will find a way to get guns no matter what anybody does.
Making law-abiding citizens pay to register their own guns creates another stupid waste of tax money bureaucracy.

I am very happy gun rights and such are more across the board now. But i dont like the fracturing in the community lately. Mostly around support for trans folk. Its a big issue for a lot of people and support for the trans community could bring a lot of people and support to the 2A.
