I have a problem with your recipes...every time there is a new video, I want to rush to the store and buy all the ingredients to make the recipe right away. I'm addicted to your baking. :-)
I live in Ireland but I was fortunate enough to spend a few months in France and my wonderful neighbour there, Melanie, made this for us and gave me the recipe (in french!). It's beautiful. I didn't understand some of the weights she had written and never clarified it with her before we had to come back home quite suddenly and unexpectedly. Unfortunately, we haven't made it back since. But at least now I know where I'm retiring to.
I'm from Bretagne, France, and we use to eat it every year! I've always been the one finding the fève (I'm thinking now that my parents probably did that on purpose hehe)! Best cake ever!! So rich and creamy and that delicious taste of almonds is like a dream! ❤️
Thanks for the recipe Beth! In Spain we have a similar tradition with our "Roscón de Reyes". Inside we also put some gifts and surprises. This galette looks fantastic. french cuisine is fantastic. Take care, Patricia.
This seems like a great recipe for any special occasion, religious or not - a special someone's birthday, the first day of Summer Brunch we host [or anyone's favorite season], the first day in a new house etc. It also seems fairly easy to make, thanks Beth!!
fève is actually french for bean! here in quebec my mom hides a dry/uncooked bean and a pea so that we can have a king and a queen! i thought this was the tradition for la fête des rois mages! nice to learn new traditions!!! and we all know they are hidden so we chew carefully ;)
I never celebrated the Epiphany with a special dessert. I might have to start a tradition. I rather use a chocolate then a small thing that someone can choke or break a tooth. Great video as usual. Hapy New Year. Xx
I live in Colorado now but lived in the Deep South for 26 years and they had a similar tradition during Mardi Gras called a King Cake. A lot of fun but I, too, was always worried someone would choke on the little baby king. I love your idea of a piece of chocolate instead. Looking forward to trying this!
Yes it's funny how this cake travelled down there too! Must have originated in the French Quarter and the French influence :) But I love how the Mardi Gras version is much more decorative to match the New Orleans spirit! :)So fun to see how recipes travel and evolve to match a culture! Happy New Year!
The chocolate idea is so clever - I always get so nervous by non-edible things in cake. Here we have a similar tradition, but with a whole almond instead. And a price for the finder.
I absolutely love your videos. I've learned so much from watching you cook. I love your style and the recipes are amazing. Thank you so much!! Sending love from Canada 😊
I'm not a fan of almond paste or flavouring. However, what a fabulous galette technique. So many possibilities for fillings! I'm saving for future use. Thank you and Happy New Year!
This video made me so happy!! It was definitely worth the wait! I actually learnt a couple of tricks to make mine even better! Thanks a lot Beth, hope you and your family had a lovely holiday season! x
It is surprising how simple this recipe is; thank you for sharing it. :) It is always intriguing to hear the history behind traditional recipes; the only cooking tradition I know is my uncle making a lazy person's Hoppin' John on New Year's Day. Happy New Year's everyone!
I came across a recipe for the Cake of kings in BBC good food's Tea Time Treats, years back, which was a cross between a sweetened bread and a cake (with a trinket hidden, wrapped in a greaseproof paper). That, it has a different version, in the form of a gallette, is an 👀 opener. Thanks for the video, Beth. Wishing you a happy new year. 🎆🎆🎆
Is it French baking time, with a series of videos?! Please say YES. Do you watch the GBBO? I'm rewatching series 6 and I'm on the episode where they have to make arlettes. Do you make them? I want to try your recipe now that I know how to make puff pastry from scratch but I'm allergic to almonds, any substitution recommendations?
YES! There are nut allergies in my family as well, I'd LOVE to know a substitute if possible as well? Plain pastry cream? Cream cheese (probably too wet) in lieu of almond paste? Happy New Year!! 🎉🥂🎊🍾🎉
In France you substitute the almond filling with apple sauce and add a little of vanilla extract in it. Make sure the puff pastry is well sealed otherwise it can leak.
Oh, my! Sounds delicious! I have always put my pies in the freezer while the oven heats. What a difference. Gives you such tender, flakey crusts. I will try this, but you are killing my new "eating healthy" New Year's Intentions, Beth. LOL Oh? What? Share? Drats!
In Mexico we have Rosca de Reyes, too, to celebrate the epiphany. It’s a brioche type bread/cake in the shape of a ring that ALSO contains a “fève”. Nobody EVER chokes on it, cause they’re all anxious/expectant, knowing that if your slice has it, you have to throw a tamal (tamale, as gringos like to spell it) party
Hi Beth!!! I am seriously in love with your channel. I love the variety of food you make, and you think about all food eaters. You give alternatives and you include everyone. Beth, do you know how to make quesadillas? They are my favourite food, but the only one I make had plain cheese because I don't know what will make my quesadilla taste good. Sometimes I am even concerned that I may not make it right. Would you show me how?
This brought back so many memories! I remember this tradition as a child and how i always got the feve. Thank you Beth! By the way, can i ask what is that kitchen aid ur using? I'd love to get one like it but i don't know which model it is
Wonderful ! My partner requested this dessert the other day! I have been trying to figure out a way to do it without pastry cream and almond cream ( I have the original recipe from a famous French baking school, but it is quite long )without compromising the texture and the flavor, and I will try out your recipe! Love from France :)
Hi, Beth. That recipe looks beautiful like you. What did you love about filming my No Bake Triple Berry Cheesecake request? Have a splendid New Year, Beth. 💖💖💖
Happy New Year Byron! I love taking user's requests for the dialogue it provides, it creates such a nice feedback loop and helps everyone feel a part of my community :) Or that's the hope! :)
Hi Beth and thank you for always sharing your great recipes. Is the pastry cream used inside your galette the same one you also use for you pear almond tart? If so, is that what we call frangipane or that's a bit different? TIA
Hi I just I was making this receipe, but I don't know why my almond paste are running during baking. Before put stuck in between 2 pastry sheets, I think pretty much too softer than your RUclips video Almonds mix, so I did freezer for hard, then I put in that. But during baking process , it was going to running from 2 sheets..... it was not so much sheering enough ? maybe ?
This looks super beautiful. Especially the scalloped edge before it was baked. lol :D I hope you could go back to the long format. I miss those videos. xoxo
I know me too! Trying to get a sponsor to help me underwrite them, since they are too expensive to do on my own :( last time Kin Community sponsored them. They'll come back someday I hope! :)
Oh that's nice Beth ! :) I'm making my own chocolate and pear this year, with, as always, a little Louis d'Or (fake obviously, because it was the currency used in France during the reign of King Louis XIV. This coin tradition is also used when the Chandeleur (Our crepes day) happens and as we flip the first crepe in the pan we hold the coin and make a wish ! :)
Oh what fun! I love that tradition! What region does Chandeleur originate from? Is it Breton? Sounds interesting! Hope your holidays were great Roderique and that the New Year brings much happiness, health and success to you! :)
Oh thank you Beth, I hope you had a lovely New Year's Eve and that you'll have the best year possible to come, with joy, health, happiness and most of all, family and love. Actualy this tradition is not from France as it is ! Here's what wkikipedia says about that, just go down to the section "Symbolism" :) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Candlemas
That's really an american thing to be afraid of the fève ! 😂 But the idea of placing something edible is good ! One of my friends uses caramelized nuts, like pralines ! ;)
Hello Beth! I was wondering what menu's of yours you would suggest for kid's party. I was recently in a musical with a huge cast of kids (Miracle on 34th Street) and I want to host a small party for them so we can all see each other and catch up in the new year. I am still in college so space, gadgets, and money are not abundant, but I want to make these clever kids something fun and healthy. It will be about 14 people ages 8-13 and then myself and one other grown up. Thank you for your amazing videos! - O
Oh what fun! :) You're so sweet to host something like that :) OK here's something that always goes over well with parties of all ages, it's fun and interactive and SO delicious! Tacos! You actually don't need a slow Cooker you can make these in a regular stock pot. Set out all the fixins' on a table and let everyone serve themselves. ruclips.net/video/T2lxCGJ9ekg/видео.html for dessert you can't go wrong with Brownies or these Double Chocolate Cookies! ruclips.net/video/rrjdxjOyeX4/видео.html ruclips.net/video/Z_SfIY-qZkg/видео.html or another crowd please is this pasta dish, what kid doesn't like pasta right? ruclips.net/video/hpSXdnxOBrs/видео.html serve with some nice crunchy garlic Bread and a salad et voila! Garlic Bread in this eps ruclips.net/video/gcvSu6Rc2Os/видео.html and some good salad dressings in here: ruclips.net/video/crmunEtov5U/видео.html forgive the prod quality in those last ones early videos I shot myself yikes! Best of luck, keep me posted on how it turns out! :)
I really like the idea of a healthy pasta bake! I might need to look for fruity desserts though. Something with lower sugar quantity. I love this kiddos, but I have seen them on a sugar high and they turn into little balls of wild energy. Haha! I figured the more planned out and healthier my menu was, the less worried the parents will be with trusting a 21 year old with their little angels. Thank you so much! I might actually be able to get them to eat salad if I make some fun dressings!
By the way Beth, I am a beginner cool, and I have a unorganized kitchen. Can you show me how you organize your kitchen. I'm in the Asian side, and we have many pots, pans, and spices. We usually take up counter space, it is very difficult.
What happens if some one has half a piece of chocolate in there slice and the other half is in another person's slice ? Then we'll basically have 2 kings, right ?
Ha Great question! Yes this can happen, and there are lively disputes ha! We basically agree whoever has the most chocolate is the King and the second runner up is the "Prince" and their prize is a taste of chocolate :)
Sure you could use a chip but I find it can be hard to find as the smaller pieces melt easily into the almond cream and then disputes break out ha! With bigger a bigger piece it's clear who the "King" is :) Enjoy!
Oh sure I got it on Etsy, from a shop called Bluets it has all kinds of GREAT French vintage finds! Lots of Feves too! Their link is in the video description :) Enjoy!!
I have a problem with your recipes...every time there is a new video, I want to rush to the store and buy all the ingredients to make the recipe right away. I'm addicted to your baking. :-)
Same :)
I made her Tarte au Soleil on Sunday - sadly it didn't last until midnight!!! LOL
I live in Ireland but I was fortunate enough to spend a few months in France and my wonderful neighbour there, Melanie, made this for us and gave me the recipe (in french!). It's beautiful. Awe probably so, we sometimes do the same thing with our youngest ha! It's such a fun and (delicious!) tradition! Bonne année!!
Thanks for the recipe Beth! In Spain we have a similar tradition with our "Roscón de Reyes". Inside we also put some gifts and surprises. This galette looks fantastic. french cuisine is fantastic.
Take care,
Patricia.
This seems like a great recipe for any special occasion, religious or not - a special someone's birthday, the first day of Summer Brunch we host [or anyone's favorite season], the first day in a new house etc. It also seems fairly easy to make, thanks Beth!!
Yes very easy and always delicious! :) Hope you enjoy!
I went to a French American school and we had Galette Des Rois every year! This brought back some great memories, thanks Beth! :)
fève is actually french for bean! here in quebec my mom hides a dry/uncooked bean and a pea so that we can have a king and a queen! i thought this was the tradition for la fête des rois mages! nice to learn new traditions!!! and we all know they are hidden so we chew carefully ;)
Feve does not mean bean. Haricot is the french word for bean. But yes you can use a bean if you dont have the figurine
@@anonymousunknown3462 I know you think you know everything. It is a particular kind of bean called "fava" in English. So yes it does mean bean.
Yessss! Yeaaah! KingJesus! Amen!!! Thanks for such a cool recipe. Im gonna try this on my family, they're gonna looooove it! God bless you🙏☀🍫
I never celebrated the Epiphany with a special dessert. I might have to start a tradition. I rather use a chocolate then a small thing that someone can choke or break a tooth. Great video as usual. Hapy New Year. Xx

Momma Bear I was thinking of the King cake for Mardi Gras too

Entertaining With Beth Happy New Year, Beth! 🎉🍾
I love your recipes, I made your bûche de Noël everybody loved it . Thank you so much for sharing your great recipes !! Bonne année et meilleurs vœux
I will try this. I tried your Canelé recipe and was highly successful
I love the idea of using a piece of chocolate instead of a figurine!
wildcharm911 Yeah. Also, it's such a sweet and thoughtful gesture.
The chocolate idea is so clever - I always get so nervous by non-edible things in cake. Here we have a similar tradition, but with a whole almond instead. And a price for the finder.
Thank you Beth, you are the best

hi...happy new year to your and your family
Beth, can I use marzipan instead of almond paste? I can leave out the powder sugar if you suggest it.
Happy new year peth
Same to you and your family! :)
I think ill have to add this tradition :) thanks
Hi Beth and thank you for always sharing your great recipes. Is the pastry cream used inside your galette the same one you also use for you pear almond tart? If so, is that what we call frangipane or that's a bit different? TIA
Yes exactly! The quantities between those two recipes may be a bit different but yes its essentially frangipane :) So glad you enjoy the recipes!
Ummmm yummy
Beth, We have a nut allergy in the house. What can I replace with for the almond cream?
Looks so good :) Happy New Year! I can't wait to see what yummy recipes you'll share with us in 2017 :)

Is this like King Cake for Mardi Gras
What happens if some one has half a piece of chocolate in there slice and the other half is in another person's slice ? Then we'll basically have 2 kings, right ?
Ha Great question! Yes this can happen, and there are lively disputes ha! We basically agree whoever has the most chocolate is the King and the second runner up is the "Prince" and their prize is a taste of chocolate :)
I think all-purpose flour is missing from the ingredients list, but great recipe!
You're right! So sorry! Just updated it thanks for the heads up! :)
we always put a feve and we never put chocolate bite 😅 it's the french tradition
next week which day monday ,tuesday...... ?
New videos post on Saturdays! :) See you then! :)
😐 Beth nice recipe
But why u put only one piece of chocolate
It's ok if I put chocolate chip?
Sure you could use a chip but I find it can be hard to find as the smaller pieces melt easily into the almond cream and then disputes break out ha! With bigger a bigger piece it's clear who the "King" is :) Enjoy!
what is an egg wash??
In this case just a beaten egg, but sometimes it can also mean a yolk with a little bit of water :)
Entertaining With Beth oh thanks
Awwww!! That baby Jesus figurine is adorable. I might need it, where did you get it from? Thanks! :)
Oh sure I got it on Etsy, from a shop called Bluets it has all kinds of GREAT French vintage finds! Lots of Feves too! Their link is in the video description :) Enjoy!!
