He looks his age. You need a checkup if you think he looks 60. Certainly doesn't live the life on an 80 year old though. I hope his hands dont fail him any more before his time as they're quite shaky. That sucks but at least he is still sharp of mind and not "too old" to live.
Sven Yrvind is a legend in Sweden. You should really interview him more. Let him tell you when he got stuck in Canada for sailing a too small boat for the straight and how he got inpounded but rented a U-haul and smuggled his boat out and drove to America and was welcomed trying to do a world record with a smallest boat circumnavigation. Yrvind is a funny name and is made of 2 words. Yr and Vind. Yr in Swedish means dizzy, Vind means Wind. So its Mr Dizzy Wind. LOL

Thomas has crossed the Atlantic together with Sven in an Albin Vega (a Swedish sailboat) and they have written a book together about the experience called "Den unge, den gamle och havet" ("The Young Man, The Old Man, and The Sea"). Sven Yrvind has grown up on the island Brännö in the Gothenburg Archipelago. The island is actually mentioned in several Icelandic sagas.
Yrvind is a Swedish living legend. Everyone owning a boat in Sweden knows about him! He is awsome! Unfortunately it seems like he is living on a very very tiny budget, wish more ppl could help him out and show appreciation :)

I met him once at a boatshow (mid 90's?) and talked to him about his opinions how a sailboat should be constructed for world wide sailing. And it all comes down to being small, very small. 😆 He has sailed many timed around the globe and I guess he knows his game. He was previously known as Sven Lundin, but Yrvind (Whirlwind) suited him better. Great character!

It's almost hard to watch. I see so much of the hurt trauma and misguided "help" that was forced on me as a young man living with dyslexia. I'm a self-taught professional photographer now, hold a masters degree and have spent the better part of my adult life adventuring and ignoring what "civil society" expects of me. Fair winds legend! You inspire me in such epic ways. Thank you for being brave enough to be you!
Dyslexia was torturous burden for me as a kid, I remember a teacher beating the shit out of me because I could not immediately see the difference between sailors and solders!
Merry Christmas from a wet and covid Sydney. Best episode ever. What a wonderful man. We all need to follow his example. I too only eat 1.5 times a day. Everyday oats for breakfast and then dinner. Drink lots of water. No alcohol. What Sven demonstrates is that we can all live minimally in small spaces (tiny house movement) and try reduce our impact on the world. We all have to stop with this push towards bigger and better, but rather go simple & smaller. I'm 63 years old and I wear the same clothes I've worn all my life since I left home at 18: denim jeans & t-shirts. I stick to black Levi's 501's (3 pairs) with 5 black T-shirts. I also have two paris of short cargo trousers for hot days and 2 long sleeve long sleeves polo necks for cold days...all garments are 100% cotton with NO polyester or synthetics. Life becomes so much simpler when you don't have to worry about what you are wearing each day...the weather determines what I wear. I don't eat meat as I believe in the killing of animals for food - it is killing our planet and depleting our oceans of fish. If you keep you boat for the next 50 years as your home you impact of the planet will be minimal...and Lenny will get the most amazing education by just travelling. Go well and stay healthy. And take good care of yourselves.
If i could recomend one book it would be BRIS by Sven "Yrvind" Lundin, named after the first boats he designed, i have a signed copy after my grandfather and its the best book ive ever read, he shares his philosophy behind sailing and life itself, fun fact: he used to live like 40 min from my house!
A complex mind can often thrive best by simplifying the external environment. Sometimes when you see too much, the noise can be deafening. lesser minds often get swallowed in the roar, or learn to ignore the incoming information, living in ignorant bliss.
He planned for that in a boat project he abandoned, “Yrvind 10” - A ten foot boat he intended to sail around the world in. I saw that boat , half-finished at a boat show in Sweden, where he also made a fantastic presentation about his life and journeys. Very entertaining, he is very funny in a understated modest way. A true original, doing things his own way
About thirty years ago he built "Amphibris" which could be moved on land by adding a pedal system. I think that was the boat in which he sailed from France to Canada.
Might add too much complexity, although I wish i could pedal my boat around sometimes. My partner & I carry two road bikes. We get restless a lot, doing away with a motor, and being able to pedal out of harbours would be a great way to dispense of some energy!

I just love meeting people with a story. I once worked for company selling to people in there homes. I met an elderly lady that told me a story of her working at Bletchley park. Hi, crew of La Vagabonde. I was delighted to stumble upon this video. I have been a fan of Sven Yrvind and his genious ideas of sailing and living, but it had been a good while since I had heard about him. At the time, he was preparing for a round the world sail in his yellow boat. He said a table-tennis ball could come unharmed out of any storm, as a 50 footer would not necessary. Therefore his tiny craft. But the I-Pad thing is new to me, at the time he said his books would be his boat's ballast, so he would take plenty of them. I'm really glad this admirable man is still around, sailing. Thank you for having put this video that I really enjoyed.
Best interview I've seen of and by anybody in a long time. The man is totally fascinating - a real gem. The videography and editing (including clips found of the man at various stages of his adventures) lifted the whole episode wonderfully. Well done!

I have watched this video several times now. This guy is something special, especially in the world we live in now. I'm just a couple of years younger than him, and we have some things in common. I'd love to spend six months with him, maybe helping him build another boat. I have a little experience with that. What a wealth of knowledge a person would gain just talking and listening/learning from him. What a treasure this remarkable man is. He's the real deal. Great video.
Wonder interview!!! Bravo LV!!! I have researched Mr. Yrvind's travels years ago... Him, like so many other tiny boat Ocean Crossers, seem to be in sort supply these days! I remember talking with Web Chiles after he returned form sailing to the South Pacific from San Diego aboard his 18ft "OPEN" boat... He said, the day I left the dock was my only comfortable day at Sea! These, "strong willed" men, became comfortable being uncomfortable. I can't wait to see a young man or women born after the year 2000 do anything close to what some of these old Sailors have accomplished! again... Thank you from the bottom of my heart for that interview!!! You really gave him the respect he so deserves... and bless you for making him Smile & Laugh!!!
I can really relate to old mates dyslexia, me and also my pop have it and it has been a burden in my life but also a blessing in my life haha I aint too good with maths or reading but I can sure as hell know how to put a mob of heifers through a gateway or having the unexplainable 3rd eye to know how to look into an engine to fix it without actually taking it apart hahah! Never let anyone call you dumb because you have a different way of seeing the world

What a treat! This guy is awesome. He reminds me of my grandfather. He was severely dyslexic but managed to become an MD and loved sailing or anything maritime. Yrvind is probably so intelligent that he hasn’t found a mate that was on his level yet.

This was the first time I heard about Sven and I have eagerly been following his journey in the intervening two years. He is well on the way to completing another boat and has plans for another boat after he returns from the voyage. He shows no signs of slowing down and I won't be surprised to see him sailing into his 90s. Thanks Elayna and Riley for introducing me to this great man!

This! This right here is a gem. It's also something I've always been curious about. Who else is out there? I would love, love to hear old sailor stories. I'm sure they have tons. Maybe not living legends like Yrvind but I'm sure there are those who sailed into obscurity but have seen and done so much. Kudos to you both for doing this.
One of the best sailing interviews I've seen. I'm 62, also a writer, and Sven is an inspiration. I prefer a larger boat, but he has the right idea about simplicity. Accomplishment is achieved in the way a person lives his/her life. Sven is a very accomplished and impressive human being. Thanks for posting this video.
I would suggest that Sven is living a unique existence in the last great wilderness that is the ocean and as such is removed from the significant changes us land dwellers see in the environment. I t disagree with his perspective of environmental change, I am only 55 years old and I have seen the environment head to ruin in my short time on the planet. Perspective changes with where it is viewed from. Great interview with an interesting old dude.
I was impressed by his ability to field a loaded environmentalist question honestly, not succumbing to the current politically acceptable narrative, and by the fact that it was not edited out, even though a level of discomfort was apparent.
He was correct that alot of these Environmental groups are making millions!!! Al Gore made 500million off of the carbon credit scam!!! When is the last time you heard anything about carbon credits???
Reminded me of my Grandmother (born in 1900) she was asked what she thought of the horribly polluted world we had then in 1995 she said its so much better than when she was a girl all the shops had double doors to keep out the flies from all the horse shit in the streets. She also said abattoirs and fish processors dumped their waste straight in the harbour which was black and smelt terrible.
Make that search my friend, a fascinating story. He is now back in Sweden building his next boat to sail to New Zealand. He is an inspiration. So glad Riley and Elayna and Lenny found him.

He has an oar at the back of the boat, for null wind situations. Too cold and windy to use it when he started out, I think.

Best interview I've seen of and by anybody in a long time. The man is totally fascinating - a real gem. The videography and editing (including clips found of the man at various stages of his adventures) lifted the whole episode wonderfully. Well done!

I have watched this video several times now. This guy is something special, especially in the world we live in now. I'm just a couple of years younger than him, and we have some things in common. I'd love to spend six months with him, maybe helping him build another boat. I have a little experience with that. What a wealth of knowledge a person would gain just talking and listening/learning from him. What a treasure this remarkable man is. He's the real deal. Great video.

Wonder interview!!! Bravo LV!!! I have researched Mr. Yrvind's travels years ago... Him, like so many other tiny boat Ocean Crossers, seem to be in sort supply these days! I remember talking with Web Chiles after he returned form sailing to the South Pacific from San Diego aboard his 18ft "OPEN" boat... He said, the day I left the dock was my only comfortable day at Sea! These, "strong willed" men, became comfortable being uncomfortable. I can't wait to see a young man or women born after the year 2000 do anything close to what some of these old Sailors have accomplished! again... Thank you from the bottom of my heart for that interview!!! You really gave him the respect he so deserves... and bless you for making him Smile & Laugh!!!

I can really relate to old mates dyslexia, me and also my pop have it and it has been a burden in my life but also a blessing in my life haha I aint too good with maths or reading but I can sure as hell know how to put a mob of heifers through a gateway or having the unexplainable 3rd eye to know how to look into an engine to fix it without actually taking it apart hahah! Never let anyone call you dumb because you have a different way of seeing the world

You just met a "Yoda" master of the sea. What an amazing man - experienced, wise and a teacher.
What a treat! This guy is awesome. He reminds me of my grandfather. He was severely dyslexic but managed to become an MD and loved sailing or anything maritime. Yrvind is probably so intelligent that he hasn’t found a mate that was on his level yet.

This was the first time I heard about Sven and I have eagerly been following his journey in the intervening two years. He is well on the way to completing another boat and has plans for another boat after he returns from the voyage. He shows no signs of slowing down and I won't be surprised to see him sailing into his 90s. Thanks Elayna and Riley for introducing me to this great man!

This! This right here is a gem. It's also something I've always been curious about. Who else is out there? I would love, love to hear old sailor stories. I'm sure they have tons. Maybe not living legends like Yrvind but I'm sure there are those who sailed into obscurity but have seen and done so much. Kudos to you both for doing this.

One of the best sailing interviews I've seen. I'm 62, also a writer, and Sven is an inspiration. I prefer a larger boat, but he has the right idea about simplicity. Accomplishment is achieved in the way a person lives his/her life. Sven is a very accomplished and impressive human being. Thanks for posting this video.

What a bloke the world needs more Sven Yrvinds
I would suggest that Sven is living a unique existence in the last great wilderness that is the ocean and as such is removed from the significant changes us land dwellers see in the environment. I t disagree with his perspective of environmental change, I am only 55 years old and I have seen the environment head to ruin in my short time on the planet. Perspective changes with where it is viewed from. Great interview with an interesting old dude.
This guy is so awesome. I love seeing and hearing stories like his. Glad you guys got a chance to meet him and talk with him.
I was impressed by his ability to field a loaded environmentalist question honestly, not succumbing to the current politically acceptable narrative, and by the fact that it was not edited out, even though a level of discomfort was apparent.
He was correct that alot of these Environmental groups are making millions!!! Al Gore made 500million off of the carbon credit scam!!! When is the last time you heard anything about carbon credits???
Not uncommon view that my anacdotel experience trumps peer reviewed research.
Reminded me of my Grandmother (born in 1900) she was asked what she thought of the horribly polluted world we had then in 1995 she said its so much better than when she was a girl all the shops had double doors to keep out the flies from all the horse shit in the streets. She also said abattoirs and fish processors dumped their waste straight in the harbour which was black and smelt terrible.

People this man is as famous as it can get in the sailing world ... he ranks along with Moitessier, Sir Frances Chichester,Sir Alex Rose, Robin Knox-Johnson and many many more of history’s sailing legends ... you guys were so lucky to meet and talk with him .... he knows exactly who you are and what you do and must have respect for you or no way was he going on camera with you guys ... it was a joy to watch this episode ... thank you ... he is super intelligent and not a nutter by the way
