The old girl i worth saving. I'm no mechanic but a good flushing of the fuel system, new fuel pumps and possibly new tanks would certainly help. Of course the pump and tanks could be fine but after 23+ years sitting, it would be miracle if they were okay. It's a Jaguar, after all. Thanks for sharing.
I got to drive my dad's 74 xj6 as a teenager in the 70s three things I remember are the ring/ting from the starter motor , a tin of lighter fuel in the centre console to clean the electric window switches and the accident fuel cut-off reset switch was in a box in the front passenger footwell Good to see you guys again glad all is well and thanks for the entertaining videos
I have a tear in my eye, and its not from the exhaust pipes. Fabulous that you & your dad can share a moment like this. I wish my old man was around, and could be part of my wrenching in the garage. God speed with the next steps on the Jag.
Looking forward to seeing you wake up this sleeping beauty. From what we can see, it looks like it's had a decent life. I've always liked the Series II, I think they're the nicest looking of the all the XJs.
Hi Guys, great video. Your problem is with lack of choking. I see that the AED is missing and has been replaced with a short length of tube between the tops of the carbs. On my series 1 I also removed the AED because they are unreliable. I used to choke one of the carbs with a doubled over piece of cereal box card placed between the mixture lever and adjustment screw. Once started you can then remove after about a minute. You may also want to check that there is oil in the dashpots of the carbs. 😊
Awesome XJ6, beaut of a car and it will be great to see it going again. I got a 1966 S Type going after sitting for 15 years and I had to clean the carbs out before it would run smoothly. Thanks for sharing and looking forward to seeing other videos on the Jag.
It's great to see you guys working on cars again! :) With those SU carbs, get some 3 in 1 oil in the dashpots. The engine should then be able to rev more easily as well as tick over more evenly.
Carbs off strip and clean. First job you should have done on a car that has been standing for so long. Something you might want to check is the octane rating. I am not sure when the change over from leaded petrol to unleaded was so you may need an additive adding to modern-day petrol. The inside of the distributor is what the inside of your carbs will be like. Plus the distributor should be stripped and cleaned to make sure the advance and retard mechanism isn't seized. Nice hearing you talk as my Dad was a Geordie. He died when I was 18 I'm now 71. Good luck restoring the Jag
Hi Guys a geat video of your new project. So awsome to see you and your dad working together. These are special times to enjoy. My dad past away ten years ago and I still miss him. Thank for sharing the new project with us the Jaguar looks in good shape for a 45 year old car. Cheers
The picture of the jag got my attention then the sound of your accents Did the rest being originally from the north-east you make me feel homesick 👍good luck she looks a beaut
If the AED unit between the carburettors is missing you will need to put your foot to the floor on the accelerator. The AED works like a choke. It reads the temperature of the exhaust manifolds and adjusts the fuel input. Then there is the fuel pumps in boot. One the series 1 they were in the spare wheel well. Very easy to get to. I think on the later models they went in the tank.
Great project lads. You will be all over this in no time. Judging by the condition inside the dizzy, I’m sure a good clean of the fuel bowls and needles and you will be purring like a kitten in no time.
Hi Gents. So good to see you back at it . I restored a 1976 4.2 in 2009 for my daughters wedding . Has the same velour interior but was Greensand. It was looking pretty forlorn parked on the owners driveway . I knocked on the door to ask if it was for sale . He replied the scrapman had offered him £350 but he wanted £500 . I said l would pay him the £500 if it started . He said he hadn't started it for some months . Anyway, he got the keys and it started up immediately and purred like a cat !!! 7 weeks later , after much welding and painting all the car bar the roof it was mot'd 4 days before the wedding !!! Well done ! Did you say you were replacing the tanks ? Cheers !
Great to see you back chaps, the jag is a great project, regarding the engine runs, looks like you've sussed the ignition so put it out of your mind, I'm sure this is fuel related! I've used those motorcycle drip feed bottles successfully when "engine whispering" to save firing up the fuel pump, tanks and grotty lines etc The SU's dashpots can be lifted to check the piston operation(or simply lift them with a finger in the carb throat), state of the needles and a look down the jets should show fuel if the floats and needle valves are behaving in the float bowls, make sure you have oil in the dashpot dampers when you re-assemble, It sounds like you have no choke in operation so would recommend you get that working that may help fire the old girl up, putting your hand over the carb mouth while cranking will also suck a bit of fuel up past the jet if there is any crud in the carbs preventing it. All the best with your new project!
Brilliant to see you both back making videos.... I was getting worried. One of my favourite ypu tube channels. Great to see "The Chief" (Dad) is ok. Brilliant to spend time together working. Time and life is precious 🤝🎄⛄🎅
The needle valves might be stuck in the carbs, make sure theres oil in the pots too as that can make it sluggish, dont over do the 'easy start' in the air intakes either as the engine will get used to it and not start without a sniff. Its ok to get it going but dont keep spraying it as ive seen a few engines not start without the squirt of either 1st.
Surely oil in the dashpots will oppose piston movement, which is not really what you want for starting a reluctant engine. I have to say that my method for ‘first starts’ has always been to unscrew the caps to effectively disable the dampers and allow the pistons to rise as freely as possible. It can even help to lift them manually yourself as the engine’s turning. As I understand it, the dampers are there only to briefly enrich the mixture during acceleration.
Came upon u,r video by chance, noticed the jag 1st. Always loved these ole' jags, going to binge watch few more o' u,r videos 👌 you've got new sub. Greetings from Middlesbrough..🍻💯% Nice one..
Great to see you both back again, was bit worried something had happened to you... great new project.. should be pretty interesting.. I guess you will be back on the mini at some stage.. Take care and welcome back Robb Torremolinos Spain
Great video. Loved that. She looks in nice shape too. Don’t forget if you do play with the firing order number one is the rear cylinder on these engines. But well done. Looking foreword to the next video on it.
OH NO ! PEOPLE KEEP DOING IT ! A car that hasn't been started for years and they immediately over rev it! A sure way of causing a years engine wear in a few seconds. I am amazed how many restorers/ rebuilders do this on U tube. Simply start engine, let it tick over, warm up and most importantly let the oil circulate. Any engine that has been standing for a long period will be starved of oil even if you have put oil in the bores before starting. Cheers.
Great video lads - got a Daimler 4.2 S2 that we are woking on ourselves and woke it from its slumber a couple of years ago. We rebuilt the carbs and did the electrical side of things too along with an oil change and the car really does tickover and start really well (when warm!). We removed the AED and rebuilt it but the thing runs far too rich so disconnected it and bought a muanl choke kit to replace it so looking forward to see what you guys are going to do with yours as a permanent fix to get it started from cold. were also going to do our fuek tanks and pumps - although it worksfrom the OSR tank very well , the NSR regsters half full permanently and doesnt pump so assume this needs a new pump and sender. Loooking forward to your future videos and getting this old girl running well ! cheers stew
She might not have run for long but the big cat lives. Shame it's an auto but it's still a gorgeous machine. Bring on the next episode. Any updates on the Mini?
Looks like it was originally Fern green. A pity someone robbed the number plate - I hate it when that happens. The 3.4 was a decent engine with enough poke to haul the XJ along. They were always that bit smoother than the 4.2. A working fuel pump and half a tank of fuel will see it running.
Before attempting to start an engine after such a long lay-up, you should put some oil down the bores to lubricate them, and turn it over slowly by hand to check for stuck valves, before cranking the engine on the starter. You put five thousand miles of wear on it in as many seconds, even if you did get away with not bending any valves.
yeah..i been working on vehicles ( 2 wheel to 18 wheels ) and small engines....i see too many trying to start unused engines with no real idea what they are doing ...pulling the spark plugs and lube is #1 i do...then a hand turn to test if it is locked....then lots more before cranking it for hours ....but it is content..i guess.... i check fir spark then ..add fuel to see if it fires....depending on old fuel and dirty fuel components is not going to test fire it up... i grew up on carbs and efi when it came in....both are easy to troubleshoot.... takes about 1 hour or much less to test fire an engine..but i don't rush into cranking first... that is when i know i can safely turn it over by starter...not hard to fire an old engine....
Where HAVE you been?!? I've thought about your channel and couldn't remember the name of it for months now... hoping... praying... that your Dad was okay and thinking the worst. (Forgive me). I thought for sure something tragic had happened and you had shut it all down. So glad to see you uploading again... but what happened to the other... what was it, a Mini? that you were doing? Something like that. I mean... I watched you renovate to make a tiny bit more room in the shop and then you got started on the car... bought a parts car to salvage some pieces off of... and then... what... nothing... for MONTHS! Glad to see you back.
SU carb pistons can seize due to corrosion. There is a lifting pin which you can use to see if the pistons move or not. Easy enough to remove the housing and polish up. Also put some oil in the dashpots.
Oil is counter-productive in this situation. You need the pistons to lift as freely as possible. In fact, in situations like this, I unscrew the dashpot caps and that seems to help get the car started.
Su carbs are terrible from a cold start if the auto chokes not working, on a man choke a lever pulls the main jet down to richen it, I'd be cleaning the carbs out as well, if needles in floats are stuck you'll not get any fuel in, it's very hard to flood a car with su carbs.
The huge smile on your Dad’s face as it started up - priceless.
Thanks for sharing.
pops looks cool behind the wheel i know he loves jags

Good to see you guys again glad all is well and thanks for the entertaining videos
Great to see no diognostic equipment used. Just old school knowledge.Well done UPbuild...
Love your videos of you and your Dad working together, he is an unconscious comedian with some of his comments.
I have a tear in my eye, and its not from the exhaust pipes. Fabulous that you & your dad can share a moment like this. I wish my old man was around, and could be part of my wrenching in the garage. God speed with the next steps on the Jag.
Your perseverance paid off. Well done.
old skool = proper cars 👍
Wonderful times, reminds me of working on cars with my Dad.
Looking forward to seeing you wake up this sleeping beauty. From what we can see, it looks like it's had a decent life. I've always liked the Series II, I think they're the nicest looking of the all the XJs.
I love steel wheels and hub caps...
Love it for the number plate alone!
Another great video and update on what you guys have been working on, really enjoy seeing your dad working with you.
Thanks 👍
Nice one!. Love seeing old bits of kit being bought back to life and given a second go!. 🙂 Nuff said.
Enjoying this XJ series!

One of the best videos of the channel, right after the the mini series recap!
It's great to see you guys working on cars again! :)

We used to put in Auto Transmission oil (TQF)
Fantastic. Good episode with you both back on our screens. It’s almost running like a dream.
Stumbled on your channel !! so nice to see father and son working combination working on classics 👍👍👍

Really looking forward to this gents..
The picture of the jag got my attention then the sound of your accents Did the rest being originally from the north-east you make me feel homesick 👍good luck she looks a beaut
After the first startup better to dismantle and clean the carbs and maybe also the distributor. Change the oil too.
I have found it always a good practice to buy a carburettor rebuild kit for them as they go bad after being stored for a while
Great to see you guys back with a new project!

Brilliant. Great to see another car saved, ur dad has a lot of knowledge under his hat
great vid, great car, great guys ! enjoyed that bill from yorkshire
This is going to be a good one lads - Love Jags - body work does not look too bad either.
Excellent! So glad you are back!
Great stuff lads and mainy great to see you both back on here
Leather was an option on the 3.4 standard on 4.2 and 5.3
The body work looks reasonable ,it did run on all six , timing is good carbs need a good clean S U carbs are Very easy to work on .
Awesome to watch a local ish rescue of a stunning car, I have a 2004 XJ 350 which I love but one like yours would be even better 👍
There you are!!! Where have you guys been? Love your content, been missing you. So glad you’re back and great car to come back with. 👍
Lovely XJ6 & proper British Racing Green, looking forward to the next episode
Gorgeous old girl ! But….Haven’t you got a Mini to finish ? Only joking chaps 😂 all the best to you both. 👍

best if they refurb the originals unless they have big holes in them.
Nice to see you both back on YT - looking forward to seeing an update on the Mini...
Lovely old jag gorgeous car, nice to see it start up and like seeing how excited your dad got hearing fire up look forward to the next video 👍
Great to see you back, I wish I was there ,I would have that running quickly

Beautiful car I am very jealous. Wish you all the best and hope to see it returned to the road.

Great video and so good to see you.
Get the carbs off and give them a check maybe blocked jets.
Good choice - looks like there's going to be a great series coming up! Good luck with it....!
Spark !! Check condenser

A quick squirt of eazy start in the carbs and decent battery should do it 👍👍👍
Glad you saved it too many going on the track. Id fit leather seats in it . Cant wait for the next one
great project and content..... good to see u guys back!!
LOVE IT ❤️❤️
Apart from great video,a great fan of the Geordie accent🙏🙏🙏
Why ye got 'er gannin! Love the new project!
Good teamwork fellas!🦘🇦🇺

best color ever British RACEING GREEN LAST FOR EVER
The car looks good, maybe some carb work as well?
cracking video guys glad to see you back and with a nice classic jag looking forward to part 2 🙂
OH NO ! PEOPLE KEEP DOING IT !

Remove the plugs and lubricate the bores.
If we had a drinking game for how many ‘aye’ were said we’d be drunk 😂😂 love the episodes though Iv missed them 👌
Use sewing machine oil in the SU carbs pistons instead of SAE30

Hope the valves are not stuck, check the carbs to make sure the piston valves are not stuck , they need a little oil
Both the fuel pumps are in the boot and are prone to problems
She might not have run for long but the big cat lives. Shame it's an auto but it's still a gorgeous machine. Bring on the next episode. Any updates on the Mini?
Hi
We’ll hopefully be back to some more updates on it soon. If you haven’t seen it we did a Timelapse vid of it on the channel last week.
Cheers
Mark.
3.4 that’s a rare one😳normally 2.8 or 4.2
Jaguar engines are numbered rear to front so not is at the bulkhead and no6 by the radiator,so far good video
I paused your vid just before the end so I missed the part where you mention the fuel additive so ignore that part in my comment below
with those carbs you got to have choke great build
Looks like it was originally Fern green. A pity someone robbed the number plate - I hate it when that happens. The 3.4 was a decent engine with enough poke to haul the XJ along. They were always that bit smoother than the 4.2. A working fuel pump and half a tank of fuel will see it running.

I shuddered at that bit too.
So did I . Nice try but a bit like the blind leading the blind !

Yep as said..AED... PROBLEM..
