    I have lots of impact noise from the business above mine. They have hard floors with no dampening and every chair roll sounds like thunder. I also have a drop ceiling. Do I have to cover the entire cavity of my 700 sq ft suite to get the impact noise down?

    Thanks for the very elaborate video. I have only one question. What is the name of polythene like material fixed between the plasterboard?

    Thanks for the video! If I understood correctly, you recommended at least 32 kg/cubic metre density for the polyester foam for ceiling dampening. How thick do you recommend these sheets to be?

      I am using 75mm thick but it doesn't matter, sometimes I am using 100mm, it goes a bit quicker or I am using a combination of both. The thickness doesn't really matter but too thick will become more complicated to install and too thin will take much more time. The most important is the density, I can see people using 10kg/m3, even 600mm wide but it's not good enough even 10 wide wouldn't change anything, the width I am using is 400mm, good enough for talking and 600mm wide for air conditioning noise in the cavity.

      Thanks for the quick reply! I understand you're using 75mm thick 32kg/cubic metre in the video for this installation -- But just a quick clarification: Did you mean to say that you would recommend up to 600mm thick of 32kg/cubic metre for air conditioning noise in the cavity?

      Yes, that's right, I mean, if you have a noisy a/c unit in the cavity, I would block the noise using 600mm wide batts, 32kg/m3 or denser even better. When you are using acoustic batts above all partition walls, in the ceiling cavity, make sure the air return can flow by making an acoustic tunnel made of the same batts, 1200mm long at least with an opening equivalent to the opening of the inlet vent, that way the air can flow but the sound will betrayed inside the tunnel.

    Can you please let me know what type of foam you use in the ceiling? It's a dense polyester but can you explain which one exactly?

      The one I am using has a density of 32kg/m3 and 400 mm wide but I have that material made for me,. Some people are using 10kg/m3 but it doesn't work, no matter the width of the batt, it's not dense enough. I've found that around 30kg/m3 is a minimum, sometimes I am using 600wide and 56kg/m3 when it is to stop noise from a noisy air conditioning unit in the cavity but for voices, 32kg/m3 is enough. If you can't find that density, may be you can compress the batts to reach that density.

    Very interesting and great video .. I want to block sound into my bed room from next door there are very loud some times and wake me up when i am sleeping what would be the best solution for me to do that ,I've all so installed secondly glassing to block out traffic passing by my home 6 mm toughened glass with 150 mm gap from main window but i can still hear the out side traffic why >?

    • @soundproofingexpert
      @soundproofingexpert  7 лет назад

      6mm glass is not very thick, the minimum I am using is 10.38mm laminated glass. you can still improve a bit, by a 2-4db, if you could install all along the 150mm cavity gap, 25mm thick sound absorber, such as acoustic foam, that will help a bit, because inside the cavity, you have some echo and the sound reverberate too itself and increase significantly, like a drum effect, so the foam will absorb some noise and you should hear the difference.

    How can I sound proof my apartment side walls? I can hear people talking and one guy snoring in the unit next to mine.

      To soundproof the side walls you have to use the same system than the common wall. Usually, treating the common wall gives acceptable results. Some noise comes also from the side walls, as you said but it is at least 50% less than the common wall.
