  • Finally figured out a method for measuring fine dust pickup for Rainbows. The total estimated error for this test is around plus or minus 2%.

    I’m a Rainbow fan, but I don’t dodge criticisms that are legit about it. You did an admirable job on testing this machine.... challenging for sure to get these type of results ( and the testing method !)

    A lot of work for this test👍 Result was like expected for a low airflow vacuum. I believe reason for the low airflow is the water and separator. Air has to go through them. I still think these are one of the coolest vacuums out there. These are also been sold in Finland along with HYLA and some other water filtration vacuums.

      Airflow has always been an issue for Rainbow except for models that use the PN12.

    These machines were so cool for 1993! There’s just something cool and retro that I love about these, even though they aren’t as good at deep cleaning as a modern high airflow bagged vacuum. I still have memories of these machines from when I was a kid and these were sold door to door. We had a demo one for a bit way back in the day. I remember the sales guy putting some essential oils in the tank saying it purifies the air or something lol. Good times 😁 love your attention to detail on this test! That took a while.

    I used baking soda on my carpet, added a teasppon of scented oil into the water, sucked it up with my 30 year old Rainbow and it was fine. Also, if you know you're going to suck up a lot of dirt/sand (or baking soda) I've found using less water to accommodate the incoming dirt, sand, whatever. Adding a bit of scented oil to the water keeps fine dust from escaping. The best feature of my Rainbow vacuum is I can clear clogged drains, and suck up any liquid mess.

    I love you channel, as you know, and consider you the best and most consistent and rigorous vacuum tester I'm aware of on the internet. I've always been interested in what a Rainbow can do but never suggested you test one because I don't know how you could get reproducible results. You've done an admirable job of trying against adversities, I'll say that! I see the Rainbow as eluding quantification because it doesn't just evaporate water, it aerosolizes water along with things that have been pulled into it, whether they be dissolved in solution or not. The rate of that surely would be affected by the viscosity and the height of the water in the bowl, which are constantly changing with use without a constant rate of change. (My evidence for this is the condition of fans and post-motor HEPA filters coated with both coarse dirt and material that probably was solute before the water actually evaporated.) So, how do you know what's where? Having yammered all of my reasons for never having begged you to quantify a Rainbow's cleaning ability, I really take my hat off to you for controlling as much of the variability as possible. Really incredible, rigorous work!! Thank you!

      Thanks a bunch! I've been wrestling with how to perform accurate Rainbow testing for years. Sand is easy, fine dust is a pain.

    This is a tough test and it is awesome that found a method to determine how much was picked up. I am looking into the viability of using distilled water and allowing the water to evaporate, then weighing the remainder. I am not sure you would end up with sodium bicarbonate or not. I will follow up over the holiday.

    • @VacLab
      @VacLab  3 года назад

      It would take forever for 60 some odd ounces to evaporate though. 😂

    I just can’t figure out why Rainbow can sell there Vacs for the price they do but I guess the moving water is cool to see. So far no thumbs down from Rainbow fans I’m surprised.

    I'm now curious if given the 20 or so passes, would the rainbow get more than that shark. Also I'm quite sure the power nozzle is the weak link here. Hence the D4C SE PE nozzle design that was kept for the E series. I also find a bit of rubbing alcohol or rinse aid helps with fine dust considerably

  • @TRec3791
    @TRec3791 3 года назад +3

    You know me being a Rainbow fan I'm going to comment lol. But it's not going to be a hate comment, these older Rainbows are too low of CFM to pull a bunch of fine dust out in your typical 2 passes. The D4C (without exhaust cap) pulls 52 CFM I believe, while that's not the worst nozzle airflow I've seen, it's not enough to clean fastly on 2 passes. You can't win them all though in life.

    I have the D4C model rainbow & it is powerful. My mom , grandmother, and sister all have the brand new SRX 2020 rainbow system & the suction is just not comparable. Could something be wrong with the machine itself or? There’s won’t even suck up a paper towel. Mine sucks anything up with no hesitation!!

      Awesome
      I also have a d4 and it’s powerful ,
      I also have a rainbow 1970 chrome dome d with the optional ( eureka vibe groom power head ) marked 🌈
      This vacuum has very strong air flow ,
      I would put this Vac and power head up against my new srx,
      I bet it would outclean it ,
      It’s one of the best deep cleaning vacs I have

      You may see a VG2 being tested very soon. Just not on a Rainbow. Remember, fine dust pickup leans toward high airflow as well as appropriate agitation.
