    What happens when four legends of British stage and screen get together? Dame Maggie Smith, Dame Judi Dench, Dame Eileen Atkins, and Dame Joan Plowright are among the most celebrated actresses of our time, with scores of iconic performances, decades of wisdom, and innumerable Oscars, Tonys, Emmys, and BAFTAs between them. They are also longtime friends who hereby invite you to join them for a weekend in the country as they catch up with one another, reminisce, and share their candid, delightfully irreverent thoughts on everything from art to aging to love to a life lived in the spotlight. Bursting with devilish wit and whip-smart insights, Tea With The Dames is a remarkable opportunity to spend time in the company of four all-time greats-up close and unfiltered.

    They are right though. Dame Judy does seem to get first pick of the Hollywood roles for her age group. But I expect that is because women aging is not a positive in Hollywood. In the UK they do not care as much.

    • @workittworkit
      @workittworkit 5 лет назад +7

      Kristine Maitland
      I think it’s also because when comparing the three Judy Dench is more widely known. I mean so is Maggie but I think with Harry Potter still very fresh Hollywood doesn’t want to feel like she’s type casted

    • @RapidCityJM
      @RapidCityJM 5 лет назад +12

      I think it's more to do with the range Judi's played, from M to Queen Elizabeth I to small art films like Filomena (I think that's how it's spelled). Maggie Smith is known more for a certain type of role (matronly or acerbic). As far Plowright, I personally can only remember two films of hers and she wasn't a big part in either.

    • @peteradaniel
      @peteradaniel 5 лет назад +4

      I beg to differ. Ageing women in British media are non existent. As soon as they near 60 the BBC gets em ready for the glue factory. We don't have women like Barbara Walters, Oprah Winfrey, Whoopi Goldberg or Diane Sawyer.

    • @Carter2607
      @Carter2607 3 года назад +2

      For Maggie Smith it is well known, that she doesnt travel to America often becauce of being terrified of flying. They even made a joke at Emmy awards because she's been nominaten a lot and won a few, but she never showed up at the ceremony. So my guess is that she mostly accepts roles in Britain.

    The acting industry in Britain reveres it's older actresses (Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Helen Mirren, the late Diana Rigg, Eileen Aitkens, Joan Plowright etc) in a way that the American side of the business does not.
    Part of it comes down to the fact that these ladies have continued to enjoy active careers in theatre and are still in demand and thus appreciated in that medium in a way that film and television tend to overlook and ignore older women beyond offering them supporting roles.
    In the US, leading parts for ladies tend to become increasingly scarce when you're over the age of 50. The general shelve life for a leading actress in Hollywood is less than ten years whilst leading men have much longer careers.......

    Clearly England doesn't not give older women work in acting or judge on their looks a lot. Because the older actresses in America are a lot prettier. It shouldn't matter but clearly it doesnt in England. American actresses would be ostracized if they were heavier and frumpy like these women. Some famous American women fight age so much but these women don't even try and don't try to look very good in general. Even years ago they didn't look really pretty and Judi Dench kind of looks masculine. Look at Camilla also. British women just don't try as hard and get away with it.

      Wow, are you from the 1950's? And would you say the same thing about men. These women are actors by profession, and British women tend to be more confident about their looks as opposed to not caring or trying - talk about rude. They live and work with what they have, rather than continually changing their looks to look nothing even like a younger version of themselves. If someone is working and/or enjoying life at that age, more power to that person and all respect.

    Maggie Smith has changed a lot. I can't say for the better. I recall many early interviews in which she was significantly less acerbic, and had, I suppose, the advantage of freshness. She seems more interested in sniping than discussing now. A bit tiresome.

      She simply has a sarcastic sense of humour. It's clearly all in jest.

      Whaaat, she’s just got a very dryyy humour about her. I guess its not for everyone but to me she’s the funniest one at that table! I love Maggie!

      She's talking with Friends. Smith has never liked doing gushy interviews. She's a great actress who turns up and does what's asked of her and she's always done it very well. Judi Dench likes having a bit of fun and is a bit more connected to the celebrity life but she finds most of the celebrity stuff a bit preposterous. They've been working for a combined total of over 140 years and won everything going. None of these women have to fake sincerity, anymore except on screen and on stage which they've always done extremely well.

    Maggie was disappointing. It was all just a little bit too much for her....!!🙄
