The 5e DMG has optional rules that I use in my games where players need to use Hit Dice and/or magic to heal. The PHB has rules on recovering hit dice (1/2 max hit dice rounded down). So my players never half full health naturally unless they take several days. It makes them more cautious in combat as they Hit Dice becomes a more valuable resource.
On the counter spell topic, If I remember correctly, dcc’s spell duel system allows a counter spell if and only if you know the reverse of a spell. It makes it way harder to counter spell anything
