As a Swede myself, my parents learnt me about trolls and nacken. The trolls are basically the big guys. They are to said to live in the forest and to be turn to stone in the day, only to form into a troll in the night. Nacken is a creature according to Swedish folklore that lures people in to the waters, drowning them.

I'm so glad you played this game! It's been one of my favorites for years. It just hits something so deep.
    *Spoilers*
The point of the game is that you died in the car wreck. And now for killing your brother and your sins as a drug addict, you are forever trapped in a purgatory world, the norns using the nakken to make you suffer over and over with the choices you make for eternity. So haunting! And the soundtrack is fire!
    Thank you for playing it!

Oh what an awful storyline, the creators have some poor views on drug addiction apparently. I thought it was super strange the main character apologized for kicking his head after being fucking kidnapped aha.

I think it was pretty on point with how petty the Pantheons are told to get with their creations. He kidnapped her (with good intentions), she killed them both (knowing he was her brother) and the Gods are disproportionately punishing them both for the crimes and suffering each put on themselves and others. Hers, of course, would be far more than his because while her addiction is sad it doesn't erase whatever pain she inflicted on others during the course of it. He was made to witness the grim horrors of the afterlife and then died in purgatory not knowing if she lived or died. It's very on point with Godly Punishment.

As an amateur astronomer I thought I’d mention that you can actually faintly see the Milky Way even in places with very mild light pollution. Obviously it’s WAY better in places without. I went to Astro Fest once when I was a kid, it was on a dude’s corn farm in Illinois. You could see the whole thing, it was honestly magical and I’ve wanted to see it again ever since. Unfortunately I’ve only been able to get to the places with very mild light pollution like Dixon IL for the Bootleg Astronomers Party as Astro Fest disbanded 😢
Also I thought I’d actually stand up for Chicago for once (ugh lol) and clarify that the blackout was actually in L.A. in 1994. In their defense (double ugh lol) most had grown up in the light pollution where MAYBE they’d be able to see a star or two and in most children’s books, animations, etc. the night sky is ‘supposed’ to just be some stars and the moon. So the big cloud that is suddenly in the sky went against what they were taught the sky looks like. This was extremely bad, however, because it was an earthquake that had knocked out the power grid so it was blocking actual emergency calls.
Although it’s also a bit hard to find proper sources so it might have just been PBS exaggerating and only a couple people called because it was at like 4 AM. 🤷‍♀️

Some interesting trivia because i don't think it will become relevant but will-o-wisp is known as "Lentern men"(Lyktgubbe) in Swedish folklore, they are said to be the remnants of people who died traveling or patrolling their land at night. The light is from the lantern they carried before they died.
And sins it is you Insym Myling is also Swedish folklore, It's supposed to be a child born out of wedlock, sometimes manifesting as a child covered in soot or ash.

Around 20:00 you asked about going somewhere to see the Milky Way. A lot of campgrounds in the US let you do that in the summer.

"They call maggots disco rice. I learned this while playing the mortuary assistant"
I learned this while watching Spaulding Decon for years clean up all kinds of bio lmao They even have maggot races.
34:30 Even if you called some service, he's literally dead at that point. His whole body is crushed. He's not surviving so you're giving him a mercy by killing him and making sure he doesn't suffer too long. It's cruel to *not* end him sooner at that point.
1:15:50 If you've ever bitten your tongue, you know you can easily bite through it lol
I love that her playing slows down when she has the match and her hand position changes. It's a nice touch that not many would care about or notice.

Actually, following powerlines in a forest can be a bad idea, since they can often go through hundreds of miles of forest. So unless you know with absolute certainty that there's a nearby town in that direction, don't rely on it.

As a sidenote, I remember the first time I saw the night sky unpolluted by light & it was absolutely spellbinding... 🌠🌌🌙

I don't know if any other swedish people did this too but at my school we learnt about folklore and norse mythology. Was my favourite time of day. When i was playing God of war it was so interesting seeing their take on our old culture, It's so interesting! I would 100% recommend looking more into it if you have the time! Completely unrelated to the game (still watching the video, enjoying it as always), but I live in the countryside in America, in a place where I can see the Milky Way very clearly... when it's not cloudy. But because of that, growing up I thought it was weird when people talked about how cool it would be to see the stars at night, didn't realize that light pollution made it so people couldn't see them in the city.

As a swede, the game is primarily written and voice acted in swedish and will be better experianced that way, but it has an english dub, by the same voice actors. "Unforgiving: A Northern Hymm" is a horror game based on nordic folklore. I'll write about the main monsters and spirits (there are other smaller spirits and such, but they're mostly souls that are bound to an object as a punishment).
    "name" = swedish
The first in the mire is most likely a "gast", a vengeful spirit that likely met a violent end and their bodies have never been found and therfore never buried. They are said to appear at night and you can sometimes hear their violent screams.
The third, while on the gondola, on the river and at the boss fight is "Näcken", meaning "the naked one". A spirit that lurs people, often young women and also young men with his music (playing violin) and drowns them.
The third is a classic troll.
The fourth in the village is most likely a "skogsrået" (also the one you saw on the cliff with your brother), a spirit of the forest that takes the form of a beutiful woman and preys on lone hunters. Those who have relations with the "skogsrå" has his soul bound to her and in return is granted luck. If he is unfaithful to her, he will be given bad luck in his life. Often leading to death.
The fifth is a "Bergsrået" (protector of the mine). If you are welcome it will protect and guide you. If you aren't welcome it will try to lead you astray, hunt you or even kill you.
Finally the "myling", a spirit of a dead new born, killed and hidden by the mother, sometimes under the floor of the cabin. All this to hide an unwanted preganancy.
All spirits that haven't been batised and buried will forever walk the earth.
    I hope it helps.

Sooo, I did think about the tongue thing because of a family story. My dad has the custom of sticking his tongue against his upper lip when he is focuses… or he had it. The point is that one day he was playing football (not the American kind) and he fell and cut his tongue off. Luckily, he got to the hospital back in time for the doctor to reattach the tongue, and he never had any issue or repercussion from that. Turns out that the tongue being a muscle really helps reattaching the damn thing and recovering all its functions. Call me sick, but when he said get the tongue from your brother, I knew exactly what to do, but scooping out the eye bare handed must have surely required some finger finesse.
Anyhow, I really liked this game, but have you played “In Sound Mind” yet?

Insym: "NO! You would never ever in 2022 put someone out of their misery. You would just call for help."
Well in 2022 in the wilderness with no phone (he took hers remember) and with him crushed and pinned by a massive rock then yes you would. It's more merciful and even if you had a phone it would take them 30 minutes to an hour to find and reach you. In that time period the person would die anyways. By ending it for them you save them time of suffering. It's actually more cruel not to put them out of it.

If you aren't near the city that isn't happening. The only "misinformation" here is you bro. Have you ever lived outside of a city? For any amount of time? Cause you are coming off sounding like someone from New York or San Fran. Trying telling someone who lives in the wilderness of Wisconsin it takes 5-10 minutes. You will get laughed at.
