I Was Almost Dishonorable Discharged For This…

  • First and foremost im so glad to be out of the military. I feel as if I was targeted for being African American and pregnant while in the military. I was treated differently by one doctor and when I spoke up about it I had to suffer for it. This is MY SIDE of the story. This sucks ! But this is real! HG is a medical condition only 2% of women in the world get. It caused near death experiences for me. I weighed 160LBS in the beginning of my pregnancy and by the end I was 119lbs. I couldn’t eat nor drink water. I had NG tubes twice and I received hydration from IV’s ever 2 days. After showing my hospital records, and my doctors statement my commander at Nellis AFB still decided that I should be given paperwork. I wrote my rebuttals and so did my OBGYN.

Hi, retired military. You need a lawyer. I am not familiar with AF regulations, but the VA should help you. Also, I am not sure why you would need to see your commander and your senior would not have known how to counsel you on this. You seem like a young service member, and this could have been handled much differently. I am not entirely sure, but I believe you still have a right to medical privacy, unless there's reason to believe self-harm, or harm to others. I'd get a lawyer - so surprised you had no one in your corner. A man telling a woman how to experience pregnancy - sounds like something to me.

Sounds like a failure of leadership. Unfortunately, some leaders slip through the cracks. Scoring well on a test to promote doesn’t equal being able to lead people. Some of the best leaders have poor academic skills

While militaries don't exist to be nice they should at least give their own maternity and paternity leave. Pregnancy is not a "situation".

After every war there were drawdowns in personnel. After Vietnam it was RIFT (Reduction in Forces). Other programs were Force Shaping, Blue to Green, etc. Many career men with families were kicked out with Honorable Discharges. Others weren't selected for reenlistment. Uncle Sam can be ruthless to commit yourself to.

I know this is a super late response but I am just curious: While some airmen may like the Active Duty Air Force, there are a few that don’t like it in the Active Duty component. Maybe you might have probably been happier in the Air Force Reserves or Air National Guard instead of active duty. In those components, you would only see your unit one weekend a month and have more personal freedom at home to take care of yourself to the fullest in between those times without the worry of possible reprisal from leadership based off your situation. Plus that would allow wiggle room for flexibility juggling between drill weekends and self-care if you did Air Force Reserve or Air National Guard. Ever thought about giving the Air Force another chance but trying the reserve or national guard route?
