- #garbagetruck Here is the first Electric Garbage truck to hit the streets of Orange County! 2550EV is the first electric ZR McNeilus has developed and you may notice this truck has a lot of various changes to the body compared to other ZRs, most noticeable is the battery behind the cab and the added on part to the hopper with the McNeilus plate. The driver of the truck mentioned he is able to do a whole route without having to recharge midday which was interesting to hear as other electric trucks on the market right now don’t have enough battery to last a whole day without having to charge. This truck is super quiet compared to its CNG counterparts, pretty interesting to see a truck where the arm is louder then the truck itself. I am glad I was able to catch the truck on its first few weeks on route while it’s still fresh and I am a big fan of the added chrome on the truck.

To be honest, this might be a electric truck that I actually like. It makes little noise, and surprising that it can last a whole route without a recharge. Great video bro!

As others have said, they've definitely made advances over the past few years! I'm very pleased to see it can do a whole route without having to go back and recharge. The battery box is also well placed, not taking up any room along the sides of the chassis. McNeilus and Pete did a great job designing the truck to actually look like a regular truck and not something totally out of 2030. Great video!

Even though I’m not a fan of ZRs all too much. This one actually impresses me to an extent the fact the arm is the only thing making noise. Good work.
Dang that’s even quieter than a Tesla when the arm’s not moving. Love the McNeilus logo on the grey plate above the cab, really stands out. One of the few full videos of a ZR I might actually watch. Neat find!
wow just wow! Im super surprised on how smooth it runs! McNeilus did a fantastic job of making an EV side loader, and paired with the 520EV it just works super well! I wont be surprised of more of these exact body and chassis start popping up more as they seem to be working out fantastically. Awesome job with the video by the way i enjoyed watching

Great video Daniel! I remember you told me last week you wanted to find this lol. Hard to believe a garbage truck can be this quiet. Truck looks and operates nicely. Cool to finally see new Republic trucks from Anaheim with the Sustainability in Action wrap. Glad you guys were able to find this, would be interested to know if more of these will show up soon.

lowkey surprised with how LITTLE noise this truck produces compared to the first iteration electric trucks, and it ran well too
this is by far the best electric truck setup so far, super quiet, the pump constantly runs unlike some of the other electric trucks so you dont have to worry about a delay with the arm.
very nice all you hear is the roller coaster tow chain as it pick up garbadge cans and dump them.

This is the only electric truck at Anaheim for now but supposedly there will be more soon.

Wow that is the most quiet garbage truck i have ever heard in my life. The ZR those does look a little bulky with this type of set up lol I'd rather see an electric SST haha, but not in this area, cans would be knocked over like crazy lol. Its an interesting concept but I like my noisy garbage trucks better. Great job though, did they only get one? What does the driver think of it compared to the natural gas stuff?
yea there is only 1 of these for now and the driver mentioned its much quieter compared to the CNG trucks and it accelerates a lot quicker.

I was struggling to hear it. That truck could sneak up on you any day. While i'm not a big fan of electric, i gotta say that mcneilus did it right. Doesn't look too ugly. and it's on a regular chassis.

A garbage truck is a perfect application for an EV. Stop and go, low speed, short distance in residential areas.
This truck is so quiet that it's starting to put me to sleep.
I run a 520/ZR for Republic. I did a 1725 lift 12 hour 3 load route yesterday. Will these stand up to that amount of demand?
Not sure about that, but the driver informed me he was able to do an entire trash route in Santa Ana without having to charge midday.

Stabs ? LOL! Out of the 270 maybe a dozen were stabs. I had 4 apartments - 28, 24, 38, 28 bins all pull out push in. The rest was all commercial mostly pull outs.

Yea no way 1200 cans will work for us. I did 13 hours Friday 1500 lifts. I finished my route and was running around helping other drivers finish that either broke down or were short on hours. That’s a typical day here. We run long hours. Huge routes. And our residential trucks run Monday thru Saturday. Roll off runs 24/7/365. Commercial runs Monday thru Saturday plus a dozen Sunday routes. We just can’t afford any unproven technology here. We run too long and too hard.

where’s the engine fan on this thing haha. as a republic driver myself, I have seen these in a few other installments across the us. 8:59 the corrupt customers of course with the “who’s gonna pay for it” knowing for a big company like republic this truck didn’t even make a dent in their profits. i am eager for the news report of when this thing burns down, then there goes your electric vehicles. they had a demo one up here in utah nobody would drive it, it was one of the Oshkosh ones I think
Which yard do you work for in Utah? Pretty interesting to hear about that, so far only 1 driver has run the electric truck at my yard and hes a big fan of it because of how quickly it accelerates and because of how quiet it is. Was the Oshkosh truck a demo truck or an actual republic branded one?
Not bad for a first EV truck. This truck belongs to Anaheim, not sure why it is Santa Ana? Also it is funny how residents are surprised when they see this thing running in their area

Maybe because its an electric powered truck. they are supposed to be more quiet and run on cleaner energy compared to CNG, Diesel, etc.

It has had its fair share of issues, but its new technology so of course they are still working things out on this truck
Its almost completely silent the only thing i hate about electric garbage trucks
People think Electric is saving the earth, but the only thing you’re doing is eliminating emissions and that’s DEBATABLE.
I could go on for days who electric vehicles are inferior to conventional, but for this specific scenario the Diesel Trucks are far more efficient. Let me explain why.
Let’s just say you had a garbage truck that had fuel tank shaped like a 1-gallon milk jug and obviously held one gallon of fuel. If you wanted to convert that truck to fully electric with the same power capacity, you would need 140 Coke can sized battery cells to compare to that gallon jug of gas. When you have a 50 gallon truck, where the tank can easily be mounted behind the cab or near the side steps, you now need multiple large battery packs to fit 7,000 Coke can size battery cells. That takes up a tremendous amount of room and adds enormous amounts of weight. Add the massive drive motors and you have a real heavy truck (yes the drive motors that require oil based lubricants). You end up losing actual trash capacity and that means you’re picking up less trash with the same amount of energy spent or doing more trips. Either way, it’s less economical. You’re using more power somewhere.
You’re not saving energy, you’re using more. Plus, it still uses hydraulic oils, every electrical cable/wire is covered in petroleum based plastics, there is plastic everywhere. The batteries themselves are manufacturing intensive and require lots of power and resources to make. To say this is ZERO emissions in incorrect…….
