Every now and then I haul out my SL-1500 to digitize some more of my vinyl. I've had a speed drift problem for quite some time and thought it might be a bad component. After finding this video and performing the procedure, it's now rock steady! Thank you very much for making this video.

I've had my Technics SL-1500 for about 45 years. Scary thought. Have never done any maintenance on it, but have a project I need it for. Noticed that the speed was quite unstable. Found this excellent RUclips video and it is now rock solid stable. Only difficulty I encountered was one screw on the circuit board. Fortunately, letting it soak in Liquid Wrench for 5 minutes finally allowed me to get it to budge. All done, working great - thank you!

I have a sl1500 that I just bought and the speed was changing constantly and the control speeds would wander constantly. I watched this video and went through every step that you mentioned and I now have full control of the speeds and your process worked perfectly!! thank you for this video sir!!!

I know this is an old video, this really helped me figure out what VR1 and VR2 were for and that the third pot not labelled on my circuit board was the pot for 78 rpm I was looking for. Now all three speeds work great! Thanks!

I saw this video a few years ago and I used the CRC cleaner and it helped somewhat. I have a Sl 1500 that is from the 70's that I bought used about 25 yrs ago. It had the same problem from day one. Maybe that's why I got it cheap. Yesterday I watched this video again as a refresher. I took it apart again but used Deoxit D5 this time and now its steady as a rock.
Thanks for this video. Now I can enjoy my albums again.

What you want to use is the Deoxit F5 rather than CRC or D5.

Thanks so much for the Awesome video!!! This procedure worked like a champ on my Technics SL-1350. It was running too slow on 33 1/3 rpm. I cleaned all the pots as shown in your video, and now she runs perfectly, and the pitch adjustments work exactly as intended! Thanks again!

As others have said this works brilliantly. 15 years in storage (after speed issues) and the SL150 is now going like new, and applied same techniques to crackling volume on amp and it did the same great job. Thanks for the great video.

    THANK-YOU!
I did all that, and my SL-1300 now works as new!
Only thing; I use CRC Lubricant only, as I’ve experienced the cleaner formula too harsh on some potentiometers in guitars. CRC 2-26 Lube has never disappointed me.

Thank you TheRecordReporter. I followed what you outlined in this video, step by step and voila.....it works! The guy I brought this from sold it to me for a bill but what intrigued me to buy this is that this Technics SL-1300 came with the Grado Black Stylus & this cartridge and needle cost, in some cases, more than the turntable alone. Thanks again & God Bless......greatly appreciate you sharing this video!

Superb video, very clear and straight-forward: Thank you! I will try the steps shown on my SL-5200, which has a slide switch for 33/45 and a single rotating pot for adjusting speed when the quartz lock is off. I bought this turntable new in 1978 or 1979 and it has operated flawlessly until now, when it has developed a "hiccup"-like variation in speed. Don't let anyone tell you Technics turntables are unreliable!

Nice video, this also illustrates the method for the earlier Technics turntables, ie.SL110, SL120 etc. One small point you didn't mention is when making the final speed adjustments check that the main speed control knobs are in the centre of their rotation then adjust the potentiometers on the circuit board for perfect speed.

  • @rawknotwantnot
    @rawknotwantnot 7 лет назад

Thank you for your tutorial video!! Applied this very same process to my '76 Sony PS-3300 Direct Drive and it is now working beautifully. It had previously become unusable and I thought it might be be a more extensive problem, like aging filter caps in the speed control circuit. It was simply spraying out the speed related potentiometers and switch, just as this video instructs.
Really did not want to part with this turntable due to sentimental value and it's arguably a better unit than most current mid-level consumer grade models, without stepping up into audiophile range. Thanks for making it happen!

Just scored an SL-1800 for $12 at the GoodWill 2nd hand.
Speed was real dodgy, but the contact cleaner in the pots did the trick!

    Cheers

Thanks so much for putting these instructions up, I really appreciate it! I inherited my older brother's 1974 SL-1300 and although it worked okay, the 45rpm speed would always drift around when swapping back from 33.3. You had to adjust it every single time and there was hardly any range left on the dial. Now all the pots are much smoother to turn (I used a cleaner with lube in it), the spindle has been oiled for the first time in 43 years, the speeds are stable, and I now know what the two dials under the platter are for ;^)
My kids are now spinning records on a deck that's been in the family for three of their lifetimes, pretty cool.

Hi. Thanks for this informative video. I have an Onkyo CP-1011F Belt Drive turntable and I was having the same problem with unstable speeds for 33 1/3 and 45 rpm. After changing the belt, lubing up the platter spindle and a lot of weak solders on the circuit boards, the speeds had gotten better but would change on their own after a while. Your technique with contact cleaner on the pots and the pitch control, now the turntable sounds like brand new. Thanks again.

If the author still cares about the comment section of this video, thank you so much! I bought a b-stock Lenco L-85 (the new model), which was playing fine for the first couple of minutes, until I slightly turned up the 33 1/3 speed screw. It suddenly stopped maintaining a stable tempo. I started filling out the refund form when I found your video and thought 'what the hell', and sprayed some white grease onto the adjustment screw (potentiometers built into the motor), and it finally started playing at the right speed. Thank you!

Hi, thanks for the comment. I haven't tried it on a belt-drive yet, but if yours has a speed adjustment control and/or speed selector switch, I do think there's a good chance this method can help. If the problem persists, even after cleaning the pots/switches, I'd try cleaning the belt and pulleys with some alcohol in case the belt is slipping due to residue. Don't touch the cleaned belt/pulley surfaces with your fingers. Lubricate the center shaft bearing. Replace belt if all else fails.

Thanks for the comment, and good luck getting your turntable running smoothly again! The QD cleaner is an excellent contact cleaner that will get the gunk out, but if you can get your hands on something that also contains a lubricant (which will add a protective coating inside the pot), like Caig DeOxit, you might want to use that instead or follow up with it after using the QD. Oh, and thanks for subscribing too! It's been a while, but I do plan post more videos eventually.

will this work for my sl-b205 technics turntable?

Yup, I need to do this to my 1350, I calibrated the 33RPM but the 45RPM is unstable. The speed on the 45RPM moves fast and slow very noticeably. BTW, Excellent Video.

@steto280507 ched how to set the tonearm and counterweight and have leveled the feet under the deck so the turntable is set up perfect but still the bpm and pitch will not hold. I am running brand new ortofon carts and brand new slipmats I have even swapped the leads around checked the grounds but still no joy. After watching video this i am going to follow this procedure when i get home and hopefully this solves my problem. Thank you
