Doug, I hope you don't think there is "horrible retention" because we watch the longer tutorials in chunks. I've been carving for a couple of years now as a hobby largely thanks to you! My first carving was at age 76. I've carved a hill billy chess set, three nativity sets (folksy style), a men's choir (thanks to idea from Gene Messer), and most of the carvings you graciously taught via your tutorials. I like to watch your tutorial for a few minutes then stop and do some carving of my own. I am much slower than you! I suspect that the data you are reviewing that suggests tutorials are not popular or fully appreciated is false. In any event, I love your long tutorials and hope you will continue them. Thanks again for the best carving tutorials I have seen.

I second that! I’m a 61 year old newbie carver thanks to Doug! My procedure is similar to yours. Watch a few minutes of the tutorials, then pause it and catch up, then repeat until the project is completed.

Doug, thank you for these wonderful RUclipss. You inspired me at age 71 to take up wood carving 4 months ago and I've completed around 50 projects, including 23 simple Santas. What is the detail pen you used to paint the eyes and smaller areas? Thanks so much!

really enjoy your videos.i watched a documentary about grinling gibbons ( a seventeenth century wood carver )and was inspired to carve and found your channel to learn .i have a project at the moment of carving a viking but on the end of a length of wood that will act like a fishing float so when i put it into the sea he will just look like hes standing on the surface ,thats the theory .but my favourite is carving small bears and painting them gold and leaving them around my local park for the kids to find .

I do the same thing on day hikes. I’ll hike in to a campsite (usually on the Uwharrie National Recreation trail in NC), spend the morning carving, cook lunch, finish carving, then leave whatever I carved in a conspicuous place and hike out. Really enjoy doing that!

Great tutorial; however, I do have a question. At 8:10 you say, "I like to do with a darker color around the light colors so that if I slop light colors over in the dark, the dark will cover." Does that mean you like to do the light color first, followed by the dark color? If that's the case, if you slop dark into the light, won't the dark color overpower the light color already applied? WAIT... I think I understand now after I started keyboarding this out. You mean if you slop the lighter color over into the area that WILL be painted darker, once you paint the darker color it will hide the lighter color that was accidentally slopped into the planned darker area. It seemed confusing when I first heard it, now it makes perfect sense. The artist just has to be careful not to slop the darker color into the already painted light colored area. Maybe my confusion and understanding will help another viewer. I really like your finishing videos, they've given me some great ideas for improving my finishing process!!!

How about a Doug-version of an Ojibwa, Algonquin, Cree or Iroquois paddler in a "birchbark (looking) canoe" ... the carving of and their adventure down the river?? Oh, also... do you need to keel weight the little boats, or do they stay upright naturally? Cheers!

I’ve used a sheet of glass on my hobby work table for years. I lay a piece of white paper under it for visibility, and build models, small wood projects, tie flies etc. on it. Blobs of paint, wood glue, super glue etc. can be left to dry, and be easily scraped off with a razor blade scraper! The same glass has been on my table for 25+ years. Tempered glass is the preferred type to use

I have a question: You use linseed oil and acrylpaint (waterbased) and final the beewax. I have tried somthing like that, but I experience that the waterbased paint don’t work with oil and the paint goes off in the final step - waxing. Maybe I am doing it in a wrong order?
    Is it like this:
    1. oil + 2. waterbased paint = succes ?
    1. Waterbased paint + 2. oil = no succes ?
