You guys are much more adventurous on finding places to stay - but it looks like it is really paying off. That San Miguel Cathedral is so massive and beautiful. I know right! It’s really fun to compare the cities and we enjoy making these type of videos too. We are trying to see as much as Mexico as we can! Right now we are getting tourist visas which means we can only stay in the country 6 months at a time and we have to leave and come back in to renew the visa but we’re looking at possibly getting the temporary resident visa so that we can stay in Mexico a year or two consecutively at a time!

    • @laurenandseth

      Hmm tough one! I’d say for festivities and night life Oaxaca would be the better choice. Just because it’s larger and has a more lively main square in my opinion. Both would be awesome to spend New Years in though. Another thing to keep in mind is that Oaxaca has a lot warmer weather so if you’re coming from somewhere cold this time of year you might like that! Enjoy!

    On friendliness, did you visit Chamula near SCdlCasas? Unless you native to that town don't let the sun set on your azz there. They will welcome you as a tourist with some restrictions. No pictures of people unless you get permission. No pictures inside their church. They are known to beat, confiscate cameras and place offenders in their open air jail as punishment.
    The Mexican government lets them govern themselves.
    Chiapas is known as "La Frontera" to most Mexican people.
    I liked San Cristobal de las Casas too.

I’m interested in learning how you do things practically, ie how many bags to you travel with, what essentials you take, and how you find accommodations amueblados? I really like your suggestions about FB marketplace but don’t see much places that are fully furnished. Of course, AirBnB is an option but it seems like they have gotten really pricey! Thoughts? • @laurenandseth
      @laurenandseth  3 года назад +1

      Thanks! It's a pretty good time to visit. You'll find that San Miguel de Allende (and Guanajuato State) is taking a lot more precautions than other areas like the Chiapas state. In SMA, many businesses have limited capacity, some parks are still closed, mask wearing mandatory in the city center, etc. San Cristobal and Chiapas are pretty much just wide open, very little mask wearing, etc. I'm not sure about vaccination rates or anything like that.
      Mexico has a constantly updated color system for it's states when it comes to the current situation with covid that's been helpful as well.
      September is a good time to visit, just hot along the coast and the areas with low elevation. Enjoy your trip!

    Great video and I love the comparison format. For those of us considering a move to Mexico it's a great way to narrow down the list and prompt us to think of other things ( like the weather).
    One issue about Chiapas state I'm concerned about is indigenous protests and unrest.Is this a serious issue in regards to safety or even inconvenience? Is the situation getting better, worse, or is it static?
    Thanks
    Mike
    PS looking forward to a Lake Chapala/ Ajijic vs St Miguel de Allende comparison video.

    • @laurenandseth
      @laurenandseth  3 года назад

      Thanks so much for the awesome feedback! It’s good to hear that these are useful.
      So in Chiapas, travelers and foreigners seem to be mostly unaffected in a violent way by what’s going on. Being that the Zapatista group consider much of Chiapas to be an autonomous zone, you will notice a few things. The only thing we experienced was being stopped on some of the roads outside of San Cristobal and asked to pay a small fee to pass through. For us it wasn’t an aggressive experience at all, it seems that many people there just have a deep distrust of the government and feel they shouldn’t be receiving funding and money for their areas. It’s definitely a complex issue that goes way back and we’re no experts but from what we understand, it rarely escalates to violence NOW, of course in the past it did. It’s common for your bus to get delayed because of road shut down protests. I’d say the biggest danger is on and around highway 199 in Chiapas, especially at night, when some robbers may take advantage of the lack of law enforcement out there due to many areas being way off the beaten path and due to the autonomous zones. You hear about those robbery incidents occasionally so it isn’t advised to travel at night.
      San Cristobal itself is typically rated as very safe though and Chiapas overall is mostly peaceful when it comes to serious violence. I think the situation is mostly improving because less violent tactics are being used now, but the unrest and distrust probably isn’t going anywhere any time soon!
      Great idea! We can’t wait to visit the Lake Chapala/Ajijic area and will compare it when we do! We keep hearing great things. Have you been there?

    • @mikecandu3747
      @mikecandu3747 3 года назад

      @@laurenandseth Hey, Thanks for the reply on Chiapas. I'm sure the issue is complex, and my understanding of the issues is minimal, but security of person and property is very important when choosing a retirement destination.
      "We keep hearing great things. Have you been there (Lake Chapala/Ajijic)?" No, but here's my history on that. Back in 2010 I was working as a Canadian expat in South Korea and several of my co-workers had bought 2nd homes in the Lake Chapala area. Up till that point I hadn't given much thought to an overseas retirement, and I kind of figured that was something for the wealthy, but these guys were making the same sort of money as I was, so if they could afford it so can I.
      Since then I've been doing online research of various retirement destinations in Mexico and some other Central American countries. (Panama/Costa Rica/Nicaragua/Belize). With all the research I've done Lake Chapala still seems to be the "gold standard" for retiree living. Between the lake itself, proximity to Guadalajara, and the sheer size of the US/Canadian expat community it seems to be the place to beat.
      RUclips has been a great resource for this research. You guys are great, and I've also been watching videos from Tangerine Travels and a couple other travel vlogs.
      My trips to Mexico have so far been of the vacation variety. Cozumel, Playa Del Carmen, etc. I did work in Northern Argentina for 8 months in 2016-2017 so I did learn some rudimentary Spanish, which I've continued to practice. My wife has travelled to Nicaragua and we've travelled through Panama City Panama on our way to Argentina a few times.
      We'd prefer any retirement destination be a non-stop, less then 7 hour flight from Toronto, to make it somewhat easy on ourselves or any family visiting. A Miami/Atlanta/ Houston stopover isn't the end of the world, but it's not a hassle we'd want to go through in our old age.
      Thanks
      Mike

    Good tip on the Uber. That is some skinny sidewalks. Not a double family stroller on this sidewalks. I love all the tips you guys give while you guys are there. Have you considered tryi9ng to do the same thing but from a vlogging format? (at least for some segments). I know that would be tough since you guys give so much information. I think I would pick San Cristobal due to the fact that there is more tourism. Plus that Waterfall and springs looks amazing!!!!

    • @laurenandseth
      @laurenandseth  3 года назад

      Omg I didn’t even think about having a stroller! It wouldn’t work on a lot of streets there 😂 yes! We have actually tried to make these type of videos by completely vlogging while walking around the city it’s hard for us because of obstacles (like the small sidewalks lol) we end up having to stop to cross the road or get past people and it breaks up our vlog segments 😂 yeah i think you and your family would love all of the things to do in the San Cristóbal area 😄

    Both city's do look great but I would like less food chains and more local food to eat, plus the adventure tours and things to do. That waterfall and boat tour looked amazing and definitely on my list.
    I love how you explain even the sidewalk condition, ubers, accomodation and safety. I think every city I have been too has been reasonably safe although you do have to be mindful and exercise general precautions to keep putting yourself in those situations.

    • @laurenandseth
      @laurenandseth  3 года назад

      Good question. San Miguel de Allende is much better for being able to communicate in English more. Because there’s way more immigrants and expats from English speaking countries residing there. But that also leads to a higher cost of living. Still much more affordable than most of the US, but San Cristobal is at least twice as affordable as SMA. Good luck making the choice!
